Why Do They Call Him Red-bellied?

Do you ever wonder where they come up with some of these names?

The woodpecker obviously has a red head. Where are his red-bellied feathers? There’s a slight tinge to his chest.

But when he flew to the feeder, I could see just where his red belly was! Lower down, and his chest was a very pale red.

Beautiful.
