Plum Bear

This is Plum Bear, ready to ship today!

So this morning, I’m trying to download and save files for 17 of my audiobook. I had a year or two left on the 7 year contract with ACX and was glad they finally changed their policy to 90 days because for a while there I was getting barely any money from them. Even though they pay a higher percentage for exclusive rights, I wasn’t making as much as I was with non-exclusive rights on Findaway Voices for a fewer number of titles!

Even after having these books out for 7 years, I’m still trying to pay off narrator fees for the majority of them. So it hasn’t been a get rich scheme by far, but it’s nice to have print, ebook, and audiobook for titles when you can. And every month, the cost of production is being whittled away.

If I had to do it all over again–I would only do it with the really successful book series and not do it for series that sell at a slower rate. Live and learn.

Anyway, I’m glad to be able to include the titles on Findaway Voices now, instead of wait a year or two for the 7 year contract to end with ACX.

In other news, my son has been creating a game that he hopes to release this summer!

He was working on creating the big boss fights while at my house for Christmas while I was battling it out with characters in my stories. It was a lot of fun!

Still working on edits for cougar, and was doing some last night on white wolf. Need more conflict. Conflict in life isn’t fun. Conflict in books is.

The weather has been up and down, hotter some days than I think we normally get in January and February! I’m enjoying it though. It’s going to be dropping and I’ll feel like hibernating!

Off to write!

Have a great day!!!

Featured Work in Elevating Your Art!

My butterfly painting was accepted for the art class for their magazine! I took the picture in San Diego on a coastal walk. I was amazed at how still the butterfly was on a breezy day, but loved the white on white. It’s one of my favorite butterfly pictures.

Yay, finished the Plum Bear! It’s always fun to make up a bear. It’s like finishing a story. Every one of them is different, special.

I’ll show it off tomorrow. Still taking forever to download pictures and I need to get back to writing this morning.

I’m ready to make the next bear though! I will have spurts of wanting to write, or do artwork, or photography or creating bears. I’m ready to make more bears. lol

My granddaughter was upset because she saw that I had headless bodies in my bear cart. I need to make the heads, or finish them, but I’m always stopping to do something else, like a bear order that needs to be done, and not one that I’m just making in case I can sell it. But I have the same thing with my writing. Stories partly finished, stories done but need to be proofed. Stories I’m just starting. And of course, finished stories too.

Otherwise they’re headless too.

I’m back to working on white wolf and doing more on edits on cougar. And I need to get Plum Bear ready to go to her forever home.

I hope you’re having a great start to the week!

Bluebird

I love the little bluebirds. I didn’t ever think they’d come, just seeing one in a blue moon, and now I have several.

I began working on the edits on Jingle Bell Wolf. I go through it one time, twice, three times, accepting all the small stuff. Now I’m printing out chapters and rereading them and making changes. I just need to take a break from the computer to see what needs to be changed and a printed version helps me to see that. I still have a long way to go, but no picking up my granddaughter tomorrow, so I hope to have today and tomorrow that are fairly disruption free and get further on it. I have a prologue, epilogue, and 24 chapters, so I’m through the 1st 3 chapters and the prologue.

I also received another bear order, so I have that to do. I cut it out last night.

I need to get some word count on White Wolf, added 4,000 yesterday, added 2,000 words to Angel Fae yesterday also.

Armstrong Clan Bear

I need to make this bear this weekend. The bear is made, need to make its sash and bonnet and embroider its paws. This was for another order a while back.

I was sorting through my clan fabrics and realized 6 had lost their tags. And I’ve made bears for orders for some of the clan tartan fabrics, but don’t have pictures of them. Ugh. It helps to show them off to say I have more available without having to make the actual clan bear again unless it’s for an order.

In the meantime, I need to really get to work on the edits for Jingle Bells Wolf this weekend. I was playing catch up on White Wolf, still want to write another 4,000 words today, but it’s not going to happen. Maybe I can add a couple 1,000. In any event, I’m halfway done on it! Which means–if I usually discounted the days I have little one (-4) and that my normal goal is 2,000 words a day–I would have had 22,000 words by yesterday, instead of 42,000, much better progress. I started this book on January 1st.

On top of that, I’ve also been writing Saving the White Cougar, a novella, and that’s at 22K, nearly done–I think I started it after the 1st. And working on Primal Desire, 66K, nearly done (been 10 years in the making and I worked a lot on it in Dec–still editing though). I’d started with about 20K. And finished up the novella A Date with the Wolf that I wrote at the end of December and it ended up being 32K.

4thewords has made it possible! It just makes me focus on writing in timed events and it gets done!

MacDonald Clan

Have a great day!!! I’m off to get busy!

The Easter Bunny is an Essential Worker–the Tooth Fairy Too!

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern offered reassurances to the children of New Zealand, announcing that the Easter bunny and the tooth fairy had been designated essential workers. She cautioned that, because of distancing rules, “the Easter bunny might not make it everywhere this year.”~~New York Times

When my son was in kindergarten, I was on-call for helping out with any activities the kids were involved in. So I got a call to help hide Easter eggs at the elementary school. Some of his classmates saw me and said, “Your mom’s here hiding Easter eggs!”

There was Blaine with most of the class watching at the window, their noses and hands pressed against the glass as I “hid” the eggs. Which meant just scattering them all over the freshly mowed grass. When I picked him up from school that afternoon, he was so excited. I had helped the iguanas hide the Easter eggs.

“Iguanas?”

“Yes, they were in charge of laying the eggs.”

“Kiwanis?”

“No, iguanas, Mommy. They lay eggs.”

So that year I helped the iguanas put out the Easter eggs. They might not be essential workers this year. Then again, there isn’t any school.

I did my walk today, more people out than usual. I went to the grocery store on Sunday, so I’m home for two weeks, just in case I picked up anything while out. Three weeks if I can hold out that long.

Hope you all are doing well. Breathe in, breathe out (in isolation), stay safe.

Have a Hobby?

I love to garden, create bears, photograph things, create composites, and though it’s my occupation, I LOVE to create stories!

You know, they say to be a writer, you need to be a reader, and I was while growing up. I wrote stories back then too of my own creation, but I loved to read–everything from mysteries to fantasies. Later, I was teaching my kids to read and I was creating stories for them. And then later, I was reading my teen daughter’s young adult fiction, something we didn’t have as kids, fell in love, and began writing that. But I also fell in love in romance. Mostly I read historical fiction romance. Sometimes paranormal or sci-fi romance.

I also loved to do tons of needlework. Some of my favorite gifts at Christmas were needlework projects. I was creating cloth dolls when my dad asked if I could make an old time teddy bear to sit with the doll furniture and carriages they were creating. So I did, and the Wilde & Woolly Bear business was born.

Gardening? That didn’t start until I had my second home in Oklahoma. I was out in the snow planting a thousand pines on the slope of our hilltop home, for erosion control. It was really rocky up there, so I dug rocks up everywhere, but watch out for the scorpions. The loved to hide under the rocks. I laid my shovel down one time, picked it up and was stung by a scorpion that had crawled onto the handle. Here, we have fire ants, but there, the scorpions were awful. I planted a rosebush hedge and the neighbor’s cows pulled them all up in the middle of the night. I planted redbud trees and plox and voila, their flowers matched. Every spring it was a beautiful sight. Sometimes accidents look like a plan in action.

Okay, little one is here. I turned in the marketing materials for Highland Wolf and wrote 3,000 more words on it last night. They’re kind of the final scenes, but still have to go back in and write a couple of scenes earlier.

Have a fun-filled day!!!

Toddler Nap Time Happened!

No photo description available.

I took her shopping, and first store, she took my hand and put it beneath her cheek to sleep in the cart. lol But of course, she really couldn’t and we went to another store to get groceries after that.

Before that, I was making out my grocery list and asking her what we needed. She said: Milk.

“We have milk.”

“Book. Movie.”

I laughed.

“Chicken.”

She is soooooo into Baby Shark that when we found a Valentine’s one, I picked it up for her. So she’s singing the Baby Shark song while we’re waiting in line to pay for things, and I’m trying to read her the song in the book. “No, Grandma.” Then she proceeded to tell me how the Baby Shark song went. lol She had to sing all the way through Grandpa Shark before we reached the next page and she’d start all over again.

I took her on a long walk. She wanted me to carry her before we reached the mailbox because, “I’m too little,” she told me.

So Grandma carried her the rest of the way. I was trying to wear her out, you see. Not me.

We reach the mailbox and I get the mail and she tells me, “No, this way.” Which is the way we normally go when she’s in her stroller, but NO WAY can Grandma carry her all the way around the neighborhood if she was suddenly “too little” and couldn’t make it on her own. lol

So we went Grandma’s way and she walked the whole way. We had lunch, she helped me put away the laundry, and then it was time to put her down for a nap. We’re both sick, so I was really hopeful this was going to work.

I moved her mat from the living room to my bedroom.

One thing I read was that if a room is darker, sometimes toddlers’ brains will get the message it’s bedtime. I have room-darkening curtains in there, but enough light from two more small windows with blinds on them, that it still is light enough to feel safe.

So then I set a blanket on the mat. “No, Grandma, more blankets.”

We went to the other room where her infant blankets were and she got all three of them and placed them on her makeshift bed. Looking at it, she said, “No, Grandma, pillows.” She took my hand again and we trotted back off to the other room.

It is on the other side of the house, so we’re both getting our exercise, and then she had all her pillows on her mat, just like she wanted them. Two baby ones and a big round soft pillow. “No, Grandma, my puppy.”

So we went to the other room and got her puppy. One hand in mine, one arm arm wrapped securely around her puppy, we returned to the bedroom. And she laid down. Grandma laid down in her bed. And both of us began to cough. *sigh*

Her cough was worse, but she managed to fall asleep for 2 1/2 hours. Both of us scored a win. Grandma couldn’t sleep with all the coughing, but I still felt better for trying for about a half an hour.

When she woke, I was working on my story on the computer, and she was in the room calling out, “Grandma?” My desk is right next to the bedroom, and I went in and got her. We cuddled and watched a show together until her momma picked her up. It worked! Little one had a nap, and Grandma got some rest.

We shall see what happens tomorrow and the long babysitting weekend ahead!

Have a great day! I have to write!

You Want Me to Do What?

These bears and a couple of others are ready to ship. Just have to wait for the rains to stop and the temperature has dropped from the 80s to the 50s with it feeling like the 40s. Brrr. But I’m glad!!

So I got first edits back on Red Wolf Christmas and the editor wants me to take out whole scenes and rewrite huge sections. Everything in a story is connected. It’s like a train running down the track. Oh, just remove that car and half of that one while it’s still moving down the tracks. It’s like a train wreck waiting to happen.

Say what? You remove one thing and it can change tons of other scenes. I know. Because I’ve done it.

One kiss moved to an earlier part of the story has a rippling effect. One person removed, changes scene after scene. I did that on my own in a story before I turned it in because I didn’t want to give up rights to the character. But I had to change scenes all over the place when I removed him. Same with another story that I decided to remove some extra ghosts. It was really hard finding all the phantom mentions in the story and after two beta readers read it, one of my editors said, “You mention ghosts, but there’s only one left here.”

Right. But there had been more. She just didn’t know it.

Will changing everything improve the book? Maybe. Maybe not.

Years ago, an editor told me to remove a scene or make it have more impact on the story. It was an important part of the story. It’s not just a connecting part, but these two teens were having trouble with bullies and the scene needed to be. But I gave it even more importance, added depth to the characters, and it worked.

I think that’s what I need to do here. Add something that makes the scene more important to the story. Now what could that be? Still thinking on it.

I’m still waiting on my final beta reader’s notes and then I’ll finish up Cougar Halloween Mischief. I have five more bear orders, but I’m waiting on payment before I embroider the paws. I’ve finished bears completely, then the buyer never pays me and I’ve had to pull the bear apart, rip out the paws, and sew in new paws and then put the bear back together again–way too much work to do for no reason. So when it’s someone who hasn’t bought from me before, I will make the bears, but when I’m ready to embroider the paws, I need payment first.

I’ve also bought three plaids from Scotland for customers who never paid me for the bears. My bad. The fabric is very expensive, and I never sell the bears. New rule: I order plaid from Scotland for a customer, the bear is paid for upfront. I don’t even make my money back on one bear with the plaid, but maybe 3 bears will do it. Some I make money back on. Some I never do.

Okay, I’m off to do something until it stops raining and the post office opens so I can send these little bears on their way.

Have a wonderful day!!! I love the cold and rain!

More Proofing

I knew more of this would be coming, but I’ve had such a horrible time at sleeping because my shoulder/arm hurts all night long, that I’m so tired all day I’m not getting half of what I need to get done, done.

I took two Ibuprofen last night to see if that would help, and I think it did some. So maybe I can get back on track with sleep and productivity!

I need to finish up Jade Bear, but I need to find a paisley ribbon if I can and then add the names on the paws.

And I made up another bear for a possible sale, but it was too dark last night when I finished it to take a photo of it, so I will today.

I got You Had Me at Jaguar proofing last night in, so need to do that also. And I wrote 700 words on Cougar. Since yesterday was a baby day, I don’t usually have much time to do anything else but take care of her. And then when she goes home, I’m usually too tired to do a whole lot. lol

I was working on the bear a couple of times while she was here on Wednesday and Friday and I showed her the bear ears and placed them against my head and then on hers. Her newest word is: “Cool.” She loves all the bears sitting around but she’s good about understanding that those are Grandma’s bears, not hers to play with.

It’s cold out! Yay!!! It’s all relative. What’s freezing for us (51 degrees when we’ve been 75 in the mornings) is warm to others. With 98 highs, and then now 70 highs that feel colder by a few degrees is a huge change. But I love it.

Okay, I’m off to do something productive, yet, I want to go back to sleep. If I could.

Have a great one!!!

Steampunked!

She will be going to her forever home soon in Texas.

Well, this is a goofed up weather day. It said we’d have a low of 51, so I’m expecting it this morning. Like it usually is. Lower temperature in the morning, higher in the afternoon. I even dressed warm to try and see the owls that were hooted all over the neighborhood at 4:30 this morning. (Shoulder hurt all night long and gave up on trying to sleep since I need to be up by 5 for granddaughter.)

But nope. 76 this morning, dropping throughout the day. By 3 pm it will feel like 59 instead of 61 and it will continue to drop. It’s welcome, just unexpected!

Santa Bear with cloak made of antique quilt, mohair beard, sack of toys and recycled rabbit fur on hat.

So I’m off and running! In the muggy heat this morning… Twelve bear orders stacked up all of a sudden. lol It’s time for Christmas.

And I rewrote the beginning of Cougar Halloween Mischief. I couldn’t decide which way to go with the story, and went with what I hope is the most dramatic.

The owls hooting all over the neighborhood this morning, one near me in the trees, cannot see them for the life of me, and way off in the distance, other owls hooting, but I sure wish I could see them. There must have been about four. I love owls and just wish I knew what kind they were.

Granddaughter’s on her way. Have a great day!!!!
