Birds of Prey

The little girl was actually with a buzzard, not a hawk, and the other is a vulture. The birds were at the Renaissance Festival, and are all rescue birds.

Okay, granddaughter is here, no hat and gloves, so we probably won’t take a walk unless I can find another pair of gloves in my house. Her daddy was running late, hit the snooze button on his alarm, and her shoes were on the wrong feet too. lol Grandma fixed. Wednesday, she had unmatched socks.

At least it’s Friday!

I’m up to chapter 16 on proofing Falling for the Cougar, 50 pages to go. But of course with a toddler here, it’s iffy about working on it. We’re playing musical laps. Max is on my lap whenever Keira wants off it, and then she wants up again. lol

Have a wonderful day!

The Missing Bowl

Keira is a big helper and so after she finished her broccoli, she took her little plastic red bowl into the kitchen. But I couldn’t see where she put it. So I had to ask her. Remember, she is 2 1/2. “Where did you put the bowl?”
Shrug.
“The bowl you had your broccoli in?”

She opens her mouth wide and points into her mouth. lol
“Yes, that’s where your broccoli went. Good for you. Where did you put the bowl? Did you put it in the pantry?”
She closes the door to the pantry. “No.”
“It’s not on the counters. Where did the bowl go? Where are you, bowl?” I ask. We often go around the house looking for things, asking where they are and she loves it.
“Where are you, bowl?” Keira parrots. “Where did the bowl go?” Then she runs over and picks up a hair bow on the coffee table and shows it to me.
lol
“Yes, that’s a hair bow. But we’re looking for a bowl.”

She knows what a bowl is, but it’s just not sinking in.
We start again. “When you finished eating your broccoli, you took your bowl in the kitchen. Where did you put it?” I pull another like it out of the cabinet and show it to her.
Her eyes widen. Yes, I think she’s got it! She ran over to the pull-out trash can in the cabinet. lol There was where the bowl went.

See? It’s not just us who can’t remember where we put things!

I laughed, then showed her that the bowl goes in the dishwasher. I just hope she doesn’t stick her dishes in the dishwasher with uneaten food in them!
Life with a toddler gives you a new outlook on life.

I’m off to work on the story. It’s rainy and cold and we had a hard freeze last night, so some of my annuals died and I was out pulling them up in the rain to set out with the trash.

Hope your day is wonderful! Wet and cold and soggy works for me!

Toddler Choices

When it’s way too sunny, Mommy is great sunblock.

It’s amazing how we go from she likes anything, to very specific choices. Now the spicy sausage she loved is HOT. She loves eggs, when she didn’t before, but normally can’t get through more than 1 1/2, so I’ve been giving her half of my one. I put on a show she was having fits about. “No Green Eggs and Ham!” Then I found True and she said, “True!” Okay, True it is.

Clothes can be a real struggle. It has to be soft. Period. If it isn’t soft, she’s not having any part of it. Forget fancy dresses that Grandma wants to take pictures of her in.

It’s the frigid North here with an Arctic blast we normally don’t have this early all over the country, so I found her monster slippers and both of us are wearing slippers to keep warm. I’m still trying to decide about taking her for a walk, bundling up, but only if she keeps her hat and gloves on. She has a mind of her own.

She loves to clean (she spilled her yogurt and cleaned it all up by herself after she alerted me she’d spilled it, then cleaned her high chair table up after she had breakfast–though Grandma goes over everything one more time, just in case) and feed the dogs and the birds. She gives the doggies their snacks when we put them to bed so she can take a nap too.

It’s important to teach kids (even at 2 1/2), to help with chores and make them fun. She loves cleaning my glass door and the window she can reach. She loves helping me with putting the clean washed clothes in the dryer.

My kids used to give me grief that I made them wash their clothes and dry them when they were younger. But when they were in college, my son thanked me because none of his friends, male or female, knew how to do their laundry and he had to teach them. The same with cooking. My kids helped me cook and one year when I was really sick with the flu, running a really high fever, and feeling sicker than a dog, and my mom wouldn’t help (she hated cooking and dad did all of it until he died), my son and daughter made the Thanksgiving dinner. They were the best! My son was always impressing girlfriends with his skill at making fancy dinners.

Friday, we emptied the new bag of dog food into the bin, and the dog biscuits into another. We’ll do that with birdseed today. She even fills up the dogs’ water dish. I give her a plastic cup not very full of water, and she carries it from the sink all the way to the dish, without spilling, crouches and pours it into the dish. The first time, I filled the cup too full and she spilled some on the trip to the dish. When she poured the water into the dish the first couple of times, she splashed it on the dog mat, but then she learned to crouch and pour in the water without spilling. Everything is a learning exercise–for both of us. Then she returns to me for more water, over and over again, until it’s done.

She loves turning out lights too, so when a light is no longer needed, I lift her up and she turns out the light.

Who knows, but maybe in future years, she will be good at conserving electricity!

When I’m cooking, I’ll lift her in my arms and show her what I’m doing, and sometimes she gets to help too. And I had her help me tape up birthday presents for her Mommy. First, these were hers, but then she was saying they were Mommy’s birthday presents. Plus, I teach her that the one box is square, the other rectangle and they are covered in? Cupcakes! And when I told her thank you for bringing me the tape, she said I was welcome. I hadn’t expected that. lol

So we are off to brave the cold all bundled up. It worked! She kept her hat and gloves on, wonder of wonders.

Have a fun day!!

A Salute to Veterans Today!

And every day. May those who are serving in our armed forces today stay safe. And for those who have served, thank you.

I was watching The King last night about King Henry V, and how he wanted peace, but everyone else who could benefit, the Archbishop, his advisor, and countless others who would take land and have more power if they took over France, set things in motion to cause him to decide on war.

Whether the movie version was based on truth or not, it showed a typical scenario: Politicians and military leaders wanting more of something, anything, glory, fame and the minions, the soldiers risk their lives for it. Whether the war is successful or not, the soldiers are gone or injured for life, some psychologically maimed.

All that remains for historians to recount are the politicians, the leaders, but the little guy is forgotten. Without him, they wouldn’t have succeeded. Yet he is not important in the scheme of things. At least, King Henry fought alongside his men.

The Archbishop, who had funded the action and wanted the untold rewards from it, sat high on a hill in safety, watching. I wonder if there would be as much fighting, if the political powers that decide these things had to actually fight with the troops, to live in the conditions they do during the holidays, instead of being treated like the new kings of the modern age, be torn from their families with no idea if they would ever return home. Not be in a safe place somewhere far from the battle scene either. Literally, fight with the men at their side.

So thanks to our veterans–even if they didn’t fight in the trenches–were there to support those who did.

Hope you all have a beautiful day!

Tomorrow is going to be COLD. 27 in the morning. Brrrr

Renaissance Festival

I turned in Red Wolf Christmas and yesterday we were at the Renaissance Festival, so much fun. We walked 12,000 steps, and that was a little much for my broken toe. It swelled up and I was in pain walking, but much better this morning. We’ll be doing a lot of walking during Thanksgiving week, so I’m hoping that another week will help before that happens! On the drive out there and back and last night, I worked on Falling for the Cougar.

Magician at the Ren Festival

I’m trying to do edits, and resize photos to share and remembered I needed to finish this and send it off!

Hope your day is lots of fun, my lords and ladies.

A Series of Coincidences or Something More?

Yesterday morning it was colder than I thought, but not cold enough to wear a full sweater, so I put on one I never wear that has three-quarter length sleeves. It’s a pretty shade of purple, but I have nothing to wear with it so I haven’t worn it for years and years. Usually I’ll put something like that on, take it off and wear something else. But I didn’t. Which isn’t like me at all.

So when I went to the post office, a UPS truck was parked across several parking spaces and I couldn’t get close. It was about to rain and I had a big box to ship for an item I had bought that wouldn’t work, so I parked by a pet supply shop that’s new but I never go into. I go to a family-run one or Walmart for pet supplies because the big store is too expensive.

After I dropped off the box, I headed back to my car, and the thought popped in my mind that the pet store might have a better pooper scooper than I picked up at Walmart. I didn’t find any, but then I saw collars and when I took the dogs in for their shots last week, I realized Max’s collar was way too tiny. He’d had it since he was a puppy. So despite normally picking up a collar at Walmart, that probably would have been less expensive, I found the least expensive one I could at the pet store and took it to the checkout.

The lady at the checkout counter tells me she loves my sweater. I figured she meant the pretty shade of purple. “The dragonflies,” she said.

They’re rhinestone and I hadn’t even noticed them when I put the sweater on. They’re more subdued. Like I said, it had been years since I’d worn it. “Oh, yes, I love dragonflies,” I said. (And purple!)

The woman was about thirty and she said, “My sister just died a couple of days ago.”

“Oh, I’m so sorry.” The comment was so out of the blue, I was kind of taken aback.

“She loved dragonflies. When my little boy saw a dragonfly yesterday, he said that his aunt was visiting them.”

“Oh.” And then it dawned on me. All the strange coincidences: buying new merchandise that wouldn’t work, deciding to take it back to the store before it poured rain, wearing a sweater I haven’t worn in years and years, being thwarted by the UPS truck so I had to park next to the new pet store I never thought I’d go into. Not finding the item I was thinking about buying there, but remembering another I needed to get, though I normally wouldn’t have bought it there. And then meeting the lady at the checkout counter whose sister had so recently died, who loved dragonflies and her little nephew saying he knew she was sending a message to them that she was with them whenever they saw one .

Rhinestones are actually crystal clear and these are very small.

And here I am with a sweater covered in them. Coincidence? Or was I guided to cheer up the clerk a little, a message to her sister that she was still there for her? The lady said she was telling her son when she got home that a lady wearing a dragonfly sweater came to see her, which would undoubtedly cheer her son too.

Coincidence? Or something more?

Okay, I’ve been bouncing my granddaughter on my knee, trying to write this, now off to feed her breakfast.

You never know when or how you might brighten someone’s day, but what a great way to start a day!

Hope yours is great!

A Ghost of a Chance at…

Getting much done today. Granddaughter is back. I had two weeks’ break after breaking my toe. My foot is still bruised and I’m sure I tore the flange too, because it still hurts to walk or wear shoes or not wear shoes.

That’s the problem with tearing tissue. It hurts for longer.

Okay, off to get ready before she gets here.

Have a beautiful day!

Legend of the White Wolf is Off!

Did you know that polar bears don’t hibernate? When I began writing my polar bear shifter series, I found that out. All these years and I didn’t know it!

Okay, so finished proofing of Legend of the White Wolf and sent it in. I’ll be working on Red Wolf Christmas today, once I return from running errands. I’m also reworking a romantic suspense I wrote some years ago–before cell phones! It might be the next cougar book. I’ll have to see. Anyway, I’ve got to run.

Because I work at home, I don’t usually get out until most of the work traffic and school traffic has gone, but I have a vet appointment at 7:15… so….

Have a super fun day!!!

Legend of the White Wolf

Don’t you think it helps to have a visual? I love the new cover! The old one was pretty but it was more illustrated rather than an actual photo like all the covers were. I’m proofing the book and should be able to turn it in today. 226 pages done, 266 to go. Since I worked for a lot of the day on Red Wolf Christmas edits yesterday, I shouldn’t have any trouble reading this all the way through and finishing it. Then I need to read Red Wolf Christmas again so I can finish editing it and turn it in.

Hope you have a lovely day! I’m off to get busy with mine!!

Fall Festival

Do you see the little goats trying to escape? The donkey that wants to? And the baby pig that is looking for something to eat?

I should be sleeping, but my shoulder and arm hurt too much so I gave up on it. I’m doing edits on Red Wolf Christmas. Does this sound familiar?

While I was waiting for the kids to show up at the fair, I was taking some pictures of flowers, the pond, and wild grasses. I’m not sure what the flowers are, but they have a shape similar to some I have growing in my garden, different color and they’re great for hummingbirds.

I’m off to finish up the edits I wrote up and then head back to bed. It’s only 4 am. Have a super, lovely, fun-filled day!!!
