Zinnia and Christmas

Doesn’t seem possible does it? Certainly not when it’s this hot out.

Well, I had to pick up baby early from daycare yesterday, and I’ve got to take her to the doctor this morning. She may or may not have pink eye. The twin boys in her daycare both have it. ugh.

So that’s my day, back to baby-dom. Now, I did get 3,000 words written, despite having to take care of baby unexpectedly. I was working on promo for Billionaire, not getting word count down because I didn’t know where to go next in the story. Then I had to pick up baby…threw my whole afternoon off. The moral of the story is to get your work done first. My dad always said that. But I had ALL day to write, soooooo. At least I grocery shopped first thing in the morning.

So this morning? I was trying to get my blog and web page done and I figured I had 15 mins before baby arrived. I’d still have time to take the dogs out, feed them, take them out, and then baby would be here. Baby came 15 mins early. Best laid plans… What did you learn from yesterday, I ask myself. To get your jobs done first. I had to do everything while carrying baby around and now she’s happily eating breakfast.

About the time she’s supposed to go down for a nap, I’ll be taking her to the doctor. I’m afraid this is going to be a long day.

I’m off to get it going…

Biology 101 for Baby

I always take baby out for some time with the flowers and let her touch them, but we also saw a monarch butterfly on the milkweed, and a skipper, and two baby Carolina anoles. I wore her out, which is great, but she also wore me out!

Finished revising Silver Wolves Making Spirits Bright last night and handed it back to my first beta reader and today I am back to Cougar Magic. Though I do still need to get the dog food! And we’re having all these beautiful storms and NO rain. ugh.

I only got 1,000 words on Cougar Magic yesterday, spent the rest of the time rewriting chapters for Silver Wolves Making Spirits Bright. I’m on chapter 7 now, re-reading the whole book again to catch mistakes. And then it’s back to my first beta reader.

Baby is here today, but I’m hoping to get more read while she’s sleeping. I have the days off normally for writing, when she’s here, but I try to get some word count in when I can. Though I guess I’ll just be reading until Silver is done again.

Hunger Pangs

Gray Wolf wanting to eat; Tiger eating…

Ready for breakfast? A steak on the rare side. Boltz, the gray wolf is eyeing the food the other wolves are enjoying, tail down, head down, he watches them, but he doesn’t approach until the hunger pangs just get to be too much for him.

Well, I managed 3500 words on Cougar Magic, though I really wanted to do more. Up to 25,500. Thirty-five thousand to go. I hope to make it to 35,000 this weekend to be at the halfway point.

But I had to go back into Silver Town and I’m making some major changes. Ugh. It’ll make the book much better, BUT, even a small revision can have a rippling effect throughout the book. With major changes, moving a later scene or several earlier, means some things haven’t happened yet. It’s like a time warp that leaves the reader–me–totally discombobulated. lol The first 6 chapters were unaffected. I’ve reworked chapters 7-10, and I couldn’t handle it any more last night. I think around ch 15 through 28 are okay, not sure, so I’ll have to rewrite chapters 11-15 today. I remind myself this is all for the better and it will be done again. Then I’ll reread it all over again and send it to my beta reader to see what she thinks. And, I still want to keep up with my word count on the other book.

Okay, off to write before I have to run errands. Remember the hunger pangs business? I need to get my dogs dog food or I have to feed them my food. Not happening. Have a terrific day!!!

Flower Power

Indian Blanket, Black-eyed Susan, Bluebells

As hot as it is, I went to a luncheon, and found some flowers I wanted at a Home Depot nearby–some butterfly weed, pentas (that hummingbirds love, and I didn’t get this year, not enough room, but I’m making room), and firebrush to plant for butterflies and hummingbirds and for photo ops. Eegads, when I looked at the label when I got home, it says the firebrush grows from 12-24 feet wide. Well, the last one I had died, so I’ll try one again, but the hummingbirds will flock to it. They’re on their way to southern countries, so hanging around here for now. I planted 3 of the flower pots last night, need to plant the other 3 this morning before it gets too hot. We were supposed to have rain. Fat chance of that!

On the writing front, when I run errands and especially go out to a luncheon, it takes me a while to get back into my writing. I had done edits on both Silver Town Wolves and on Cougar Magic in the morning before I went, but only had 500 word count on Cougar Magic. I needed 2,000 to make my word goal. I’m 10K ahead, but I want to be aheader (author prerogative to make up words when I need a word that doesn’t exist) than that. So I I’m doing good, but want to be even further ahead because I’ll be getting return edits on the jaguar book and the other wolf book, and Silver Town and I’ll have to stop to do those for days….But, I managed to get 2500, and 10,000 steps in, yay!! I was listening to some wilder epic music on Youtube that had good beats to it, so I was stepping it up and writing at the same time. Yay, for music inspiration.

Okay, before it gets too much later this morning, I’m off to write!

Time to Get Cool

Holly, the black bear, is making her way down to the pond to take a swim and cool down. It’s so hot here now, I think it’s a great idea, and Boltz, 6-year-old gray wolf is sleeping in his den. He’s being omega here, while all the other wolves are chilling in another den.

Do you ever feel that way? Just want to get away from the crowd? Holly was chasing another bear around earlier, but I couldn’t catch them in time for a shot.

Okay, I’m at 20K on Cougar Magic! Fifty to go. I need to make some changes to Silver Town Wolf Christmas that my first beta reader suggested…too. And a luncheon also. Sometimes it’s important to join the real world, then it’s back to the wolf den to write. Or…cougar den… Or bear den… I just have to make sure I go to the right one or I’ll be in trouble.

We might get rain. That’s a big “might,” but I’m always hopeful. Despite the heat, 109 heat index yesterday, I was out pulling grass from my flowerbeds. I couldn’t stand it any longer. But it didn’t feel that bad. Maybe I’m finally getting used to it. Were supposed to only have a heat index of 101 today. Yay!

Wolves and Snow Leopards

I love both. And I was very fortunate to get beautiful shots of each of these. The 2-year old emergent Arctic wolf alpha at the International Wolf Center, Ely, MN, and the snow leopard, Como Zoo, MN.

I’m working on Cougar Magic now, and I rarely capture good pictures of cougars in captivity, so I don’t have many to show. Of course one of my troubles has been that I didn’t know to change my ISO to capture faster moving critters back then. Most of the ones I saw were on the move. A few were resting so far up in the rocks, it was hard to capture good images. But maybe someday. And we couldn’t see the one at the Como Zoo at all. Exhibit, no cat.

Despite having baby for all day, and then again from 6:45 pm until 10:30 pm, I managed somehow to wrangle another 3,000 words out. I usually can’t. Shows that if I put my mind to it, AND the scenes are coming to me, I can do it. I have to say baby is very needy, wanting attention, or to be held when she’s getting sleepy, that it’s not like she’s at the age where she can sit and draw or something. But she did take 4 hours worth of naps, and I managed to get her to sleep by 8 pm last night, so I had another 2 1/2 hours to write.

Speaking of which, I’m on a forward momentum now, so off to get some more word count down. I’m at 16,000! So I’ve bypassed the number of 15,000 on Claiming the White Bear. I got stuck there, but I’ll do some brainstorming and push through that one too soon. I need to write my next fae book too and I want to finish one of the other YA vampire stories I’ve started. Not sure what my word count is on them, but they’re in the plans. And then I need to figure out what I want to write for the next wolf stories for 2020. It’s neverending, and what fun!

Can Music Jumpstart Your Muse?

Absolutely! For just about anything, or take you away from the drudgery of what you’re doing, carrying you away to some other fantastical world. But boy can it be jarring too, if it’s not the right music for the job. On the other hand, what works for one, might not work for another.

I pay my neighbor to mow my yard and he was listening to music while he was weedeating. He said he would never do yard work again without listening to it. It carries you away, you see, from that hot, menial task.

You’ve probably watched a movie that has the most beautiful musical score and it carries you right into the world with no problem. And then the worst ever musical score that pulls you right out of the story because it doesn’t suit the mood at all.

 

Storms and sunset and clouds and sunrise.

I had been listening to Halo (game theme music), and Game of Thrones. I listen to a lot of movie scores like Bourne Identity, etc, for the thrill of the chase. But someone was telling me for his work, photo composition, he listens to Youtube game music. And so I found the one he was listening to, and it was beautiful. So I’ve been switching music for background music and it helps me to write.

I’ve been listening to Skyrim because it lasts for 10 hours and I don’t have to keep starting another hour-long song. I write all day, so it helps. It’s relaxing, not great for exercising to though. So when I want something that has more of a beat while I’m editing, I just look at the sidebar and pull up some other song. One that came up was a chilling space kind of music and it had a pretty good beat so I could exercise and read to edit at the same time.

This is the 10-hour long, relaxing music. This is more suitable for mystery, mystics, magic, and otherworldly, rather than driving conflict, like I usually write. But I still love it.

One cover artist mentioned some music that really gets her in the mood for a certain kind of cover. I listened to it and it was the most jarring, bone rattling, chalk screeching music I’ve ever heard. I’d be running for the hills to get away from it. So you have to find the music that works for you!

Off and Running!

Hibiscus

Despite having baby over here all day yesterday, then eating over at my daughter’s house last night, somehow I managed to write 3600 words. The baby slept on my lap for 2.5 hours the first time and 1.5 hours the next, maybe that’s how! But I have to type one-handed.

Anyway, this is on the new book Cougar Magic. I’m 7,000 words into the book, yay! It’s a great start, now if I can keep up the momentum! I hope to reach 10,000 today. Ihave to take care  of baby for tomorrow and then again that night, so it might be a wash. But I’ll try to make some headway. I also have another book I’m working on, Claiming the White Bear, so hopefully both will be done this year.

It’s been up in the hundreds on heat index, so though I want to get out and pull weeds, I’ll just stay in and write and when it’s a little cooler, tackle the grass and weeds again.

I was trying to get some promo blogs written for it today, and finished the marketing materials for Silver Town Wolf Christmas and turned them in. So I made up the picture of the wolves and added it to a video I made also. And I updated my signature line on my emails.

But now I need to update my website again. When I post about new releases coming up, some bookseller sites don’t have the links for the book, and I check periodically, nothing, and then? I forget. lol

Anyway, I’m still working on the blogs, cut out 12 bears and Sunflower Bear sold! She’s found a home in Australia. This signature line is tiny on my email, so it looks much clearer than this.

I shipped off bears yesterday, but baby’s here today, so not sure how much I’ll get done. Maybe I’ll just take off the day and play!
