Hairy Bears and Hairy Woodpeckers

Finished an order of a teddy bear for a newborn, and caught a much better shot of the hairy woodpecker this time. He’s getting used to me.

Still plugging away at the story. 35K done, 45K to go.

Computer and internet giving me fits, so finishing this while I can!

Have a lovely rest of the weekend! 🙂

Never Know What You Will Find…

When you take a walk. A composite of the bear and monarch butterfly from pixelsquid. The boardwalk through the wetlands is my picture. The second one was Sam’s Dream Theme with the bear and flowers and foreground rock. I added rocks and water from Pixabay, and ripples of water (mine), and bunny and koi from Pixelsquid, and a rainbow.

Just think, you could climb the mountains and find the strangest things.

Baby is here and I finally got her asleep…on my lap. I tried her in her playpen, but no go.

She’s now awake…. back to work!

Have a great bear-loving day. 🙂 <3

Busy Little Honey Bees

Can you imagine working as hard as these little bees until the end of their life?

I saw a monarch flitting about the milkweed yesterday, but the flowers haven’t quite opened. The butterfly will be back now that it knows where they are. And I saw a ladybug the other day. Dragonflies too. But with the good stuff, we get the bad.

No-see-ums–tiny bugs you can barely see with big teeth were biting.

But I also saw a hummingbird checking out the purple chives flowers. I’m not sure they eat on that, but it made me think I’d like to have a big flower pot with something they would like sitting right there for picture time. The flowering plant that I had next to the patio didn’t make it and the hummingbirds loved it.

And I’m off to write! 49K to go!

Have a super busy, but fun day!

HEART OF THE WOLF is the first book of the series of the Heart of the Wolf

same name and I look forward to reading the rest. I was also pleasantly surprised to get a bonus novella about Bella’s twin sister Serena after finishing this newly reissued title. There was also a sneak peek of the different series based on the white wolves that Terry Spear is writing about also. I look forward to reading all of her Werewolf series in the future. They are definite must-reads on my list of series to complete. http://freshfiction.com/review.php?id=65658

Baby’s on her way over. She has scarlet fever, but is on antibiotics. I hope she feels better today.

Here are some more pictures of flowers and such.

In the first picture of the Orange Rocket Barberry, it was more purple. That was it’s first year here. This spring its fuller and really pretty, more orange. With a small yard, I need smaller plants, so this one is 1 1/2 feet wide and 4 feet tall, according to the card that came with it, though I saw a listing on the plant site that said it can get to 2 feet wide and 5-6 feet tall. Which works fine also.

The blanket flower is next to a row of miniature roses. And the milkweed flowers are getting ready to bloom for the monarch butterflies!

The dogs are whining at the door, waiting for baby to arrive!

And I’m off to finish this and get ready for her. Have a lovely flower-filled day!

A Study in Woodpeckers

Redheaded woodpecker, Red-bellied woodpecker, Downy, and Hairy

When I first moved here, I saw the redheaded woodpecker, but I think there are too many birds and the dogs, and me to make it worth his while to visit the yard. I saw a downy in my tree out front when I went to walk to the mailbox around the block, but no camera. He just stayed there too, so he would have made for the perfect shot. He was low in the tree. Most of the time, I’m really far away, and the light in the sky makes it hard to focus on the bird.

I caught this downy in a forest in Minnesota. The hairy woodpeckers were doing a mating dance in the tree behind my property. And I caught the red-bellied woodpecker in flight. He’s the only type that eats at my feeders, unafraid, for the most part, of me taking pictures out of my window in full view of him.

The hairy is still working on the dead branch of the pine tree out front, so I caught him yesterday working on it. I used to be able to stand there and take pictures, but this one was skittish.

If you hear that rat-a-tat-tat in in the woods some day, it just might be a woodpecker. Yes, they’re destructive, and can cause damage to homes. I still love seeing them. I heard an owl in that same tree the other night, but I wouldn’t have been able to capture a picture of him. It was tempting to look for him though. I was curious what kind it is.

Back to the book. 27,000 done, 53K to go!

Have a super day!!!

Massing Color or….Not & It’s EARTH Day!

Pink gerbera daisy, yellow daffodils, hot pink dianthus, red gerbera daisies, red drift roses, yellow Asiatic lily, yellow coreopsis moonbeam, and more flowers about to bloom

Around the neighborhood when I walk, I see where some neighbors mass their colors–all orange marigolds, or yellow lantana, and it’s showy and pretty. That’s what is often recommended. Same plant, same color for a really spectacular setting.

Me? I tend to have a riot of color. I have been adding a lot of the same kind of flowers–the lilies and daylilies so that it’s not just one here and there. And as they get bigger, spread more, they’ll be more noticeable. I had only one red rose bush, and now have two. I notice that neighbors who have more than one in their front yard appear to be more balanced. I added one of the apricot ones too. I can’t help myself. They’re beautiful. But I think another couple of red roses is in order. The drift are small, lower, you don’t have to do a thing with them. So I think I’ll get a couple more of those to balance things out. I have all purple magic crepe myrtles out front so that I have balance with those. 🙂

I had all blaze red roses out front of my house along a fence when I lived in Oklahoma, and it really was pretty, but the blaze eventually died of fungus. My mom had them too all along her white brick wall in Texas and the same thing happened to hers. Knockout roses seem to be the best for hot humid weather and survive fine through the hard freezes we have.

I had a redbud with the prettiest purple flowers and I had a flowering perennial ground cover that was the exact same color! I did it on purpose, NOT, but boy, was it spectacular when all of them were in bloom. So massing color does work!

It’s EARTH Day! Remember the earth, plant a tree, recycle, save water!

Okay, off to work on the story!! Up to 25,000, 55K to go!

Have a wonderful day!!

Gardening as a Hobby

Burgundy daylily, pink dianthus in the background, red Asian lily, yellow Asian lily

I’m impatient. Yep. That’s me.

I started my garden two years ago, but from the beginning, I wanted it to look….finished. This year, its just starting to take hold in it’s third year. Some flowers bit the dust. Others are doing great. Some struggle. From that, I learn which do fine here in the hot, hot, hot long humid summers, but can still withstand a hard freeze or two…or three in winter.

But I kept adding flowers. It didn’t look like a garden yet. Just a few sparse flowers here and there.  And lots and lots and lots of weeds.

The second year, I added a lot more flowers. I learned that interspersing with annuals helps, if the flowerbed needs some more color, but you know that the perennials, that come back each year, will eventually take over. That way there’s more constant color. Some annuals will reseed themselves and you’ll have a new crop, or a few anyway, will return the next year.

With the flowerbeds around the oak trees, they (the builders) piled mulch high, high on the trees, not good, BUT the trees put out feeder roots through the mulch. So planting in that isn’t easy.  And you don’t want to damage the tree. Then seeds really are the greatest. The problem again is that the high mound dries out quickly, so I have to plant stuff that doesn’t mind a little drying out. I have to water it on the hottest days.

I like low maintenance as much as possible. Plant the flowers, let everything do it’s own thing. And then I get to just take pictures. 🙂 <3

But I’m still spending a LOT of time weeding. Soooo, still working on a way to cut some of that down. Until then, I’ve got word count to get back to!

My regular job calls me.

Have a lovely weekend!! We’re looking at severe thunderstorms and hail even today. So I was out pulling weeds from the lawn this morning. 🙂

I Meant to Do That

I wanted to take some pictures of the pine saplings that have sprouted from seeds in my yard to show their progress. They’re supposed to grow 2 feet a year! If you consider these sprouted from seeds, I believe it! The big ones I have are old forest, so in my small way, I’m adding back to the old forest that they cut down. In the one picture, that shows the old forest reflected in one of the ponds, and just how tall they get. I’ll be potting some for my daughter because they are all over the flowerbeds and some I’ve had to transplant to places where they can be allowed to grow. 🙂 <3 I just have to dig really deep to ensure I don’t cut off their tap root.

But do you see the rainbow captured in the rain drop on the one picture of the loblolly pine? I meant to do that. Right. I couldn’t believe it when I uploaded the picture and saw that the way the sunlight hit the water drop, it created a rainbow in miniature. Now how cool is that?

Baby is sick!! Poor thing. Now she has strep throat so she’s home with her momma and that means I’ll be pulling more weeds out of the grass in the backyard–some of the grass is fine, some of it is more weed than grass, and working on the story. 23,000 done, 57,000 to go!

Save a tree! Plant some more! Give a little bit back to wildlife.
