Do You Ever Get Excited…

about the little things in life?

I had to move away from the windows yesterday so I could get some writing done, because I was having way too much fun photographing a new bird to the garden. Blue jays, doves, and cardinals were having no success at chasing him off.

He’s a rose-breasted grosbeak and he’s guarding the seed tray again this morning. From what I read, he’s migrating north to the breeding grounds. So for now, he’s filling up before he’s on his way.  He doesn’t even mind me photographing him.

This morning, two courting blue jays, the red-bellied woodpecker, two courting bluebirds, and mated cardinals were all in the yard, but the grosbeak has managed to keep his place at the table, only leaving briefly, though singing away to us that this is his claimed territory when I took the puppies out to potty.

So eat well, little grosbeak, before you continue your long journey, and I’ll enjoy watching you until then.

Take pleasures in the small things in life and they will snowball into something big. 🙂

Severe Thunderstorms Are on the Way

Line of Thunderstorms, Textured Sky

But last time they looked ominous and dissipated into a hot, sunny day. We ended up walking the baby even. Still, I need to walk to the mailbox, plant a plant, and then get to work on the story, secure from the storms, if they truly come.

Have a great one!

4,400 + Words!

When baby is asleep, I was taking pictures of her, but she’s been  fussy, so instead this week, I’ve been walking her, or letting her sleep on my lap once she’s sound asleep. She had a doctor’s appointment, and that wore her out, so I chanced taking a picture of her while she slept after we got her home. A lovely lady made the quilt for her, so I wanted to get a picture of her on it too, which meant I woke her when we set up the quilt next. But that’s okay, because at this age she needs tummy time, and she’s much more aware of the world around her. And she doesn’t immediately fuss for something to eat when she wakes now.

I didn’t go over quite to my daughter’s place quite so early because they’d had a better night, and actually managed to write all morning! And with walking baby at her house, still had a two and half mile walk. 🙂

I’m still way behind on writing, and I just got first edits on Flight of the White Wolf that I need to work on, but I only have 9,000 words to go on The Bounty Hunter Gets Her Wolf!!! It wasn’t that long ago, really, that I had 80,000 words to write. 🙂 And when I wake in the middle of the night, I begin thinking of Billionaire Wolf Christmas and the trouble I can get the brother in. 🙂 With a woman of course. A wolf. A scientist. I think.

Perseverance is the only way to make it happen. Sometimes, I just couldn’t write–long days with trying to help with baby. Edits that meant cutting out more than I was writing. The edits HAVE to be done, so it’s either early on or later.

So I’m off to start my day, feed the puppies, work on the story, and then run errands, and help with baby.

And we’re going to have our Highland boxset out on May 1st!

Have a lovely purple day!

From Austere Beginnings to…

Bountiful beauty. And it gets prettier every day.

It’s like writing. It starts out with just a few words and builds and builds and builds until it’s a story.

And life starts out the same way.  With no thoughts of anything except eating and sleeping, and then awareness, dreams, the beginning of the beginning.

Have a day filled with good memories!

Storms are on the way…

blanket flower, all stages 900 008

Here is the blanket flower in all its pretty stages. After planting and just a few days later, it’s covered in tons of buds. 🙂

Don’t you love it when a plant “performs”?  I plant so many plants that do and so many that struggle. The strugglers aren’t welcome in the garden again. I want EASY MAINTENANCE. I have too much other stuff to do. So plant the plants, water them when necessary, and let them do their own thing. AND enjoy.  🙂 Oh, and I have to remind myself that some of the plants that didn’t do anything last year, daylilies that didn’t bloom, marigolds that died, salvia that barely could hold on, have all come into their own. Only one of the coneflowers came back this year, but it’s lovely. The marigolds reseeded themselves, the salvia are just beautiful, full of flowers and the daylilies too.

During the week, I’ve been helping out with grandbaby, which puts me behind on writing. We started walking her from my daughter’s house to my house so I can take my puppies out after lunch, feed them, feed the baby, and walk back. But baby has been so fussy that I end up walking her a lot in the house too, just to get her settled. Yesterday, I managed over five miles. 🙂 Who would have thunk it?

But it put me behind on writing. More so than before. *sigh*

The good thing is, I WILL finish the book. It’s due July 1st, so it’s not that I’m late or anything. I just wanted to set my goals so that I’d have time to write other books too this year. Billionaire Wolf needs to be written too. And the other books are on my own schedule.

Okay, I’m off to try and plant the butterfly bushes before it storms. I think it’s light enough out now.

Have a happy low maintenance day!

Oh, No! Company!

sunset-at-writers-retreat-937

Are you a neatnik that has a uber-cleaned home all the time?

I try to keep my house picked up, but when I’m working on bears, have another order to do, I have fur out, cutting board, and all the stuff that goes into making the bear out, it gets messy. Yes, I have a sewing room. But it’s for sewing on the machine and storage for the fur and bows and bear-making stuff. It’s not big enough or comfortable enough to make the bears.

Does all that junk from the mail, even if it’s not junk, pile up? Dust bunnies taking over? Your house begins to look like the set of a haunted house series because everything needs to be dusted again, even if you did the dusting just a few days ago?

If you have company, do you make it look more “friendly”? Or do you figure it’s a lived in home, so there. lol

Well, I like my home to look welcoming, not junky. So my daughter and I walked from her home to mine so I could feed the puppies and water the flowers, and then we walked the baby back to her house. I wasn’t expecting company. 🙂 And as we were walking to my house in the beginning I was thinking–how bad does my house look? Well, not too bad, but it could have used some work.

Do you have a lot of stuff out that doesn’t need to be out? I find that to be the case here. I use something, and it stays out. Because, hey, I might need to use it again! Soon. A couple of weeks go by and it’s still sitting out. 🙂 And I haven’t used it again.

So I put everything away, vacuumed, need to plant some more plants, and dusted. It won’t last long. By tomorrow, the puppies will have dragged in enough grass and pine needles to warrant another vacuuming. They don’t shed fur, just grass and pine needles.

And the dust bunnies? I swear they crawl out of the woodwork and then breed like…bunnies.

But at least for today, the house is clean.

Have a perfectly uncluttered day!

Excerpt from SEAL Wolf Undercover by Terry Spear

Jillian couldn’t believe that a lupus garou could be trying to kill her brother. The wolf chasing Miles had to be a shifter. She knew he wasn’t running with Miles for fun. Not with the way her brother had howled, calling to her for help. If the other wolf had been in trouble too, he would have howled along with her brother No, he’d been hell bent on Miles’s trail. Worse, she worried he could be the wolf who had nearly killed Douglas.

She ran through the woods to track where the wounded wolf had gone once he’d finally veered from her brother’s path. Wild wolves had been sighted in Oregon, so at first she’d thought it might have claimed the territory and was chasing Miles out of the area, or worse, planned to kill him. When she couldn’t scare him off with the first three rounds she’d fired, she was certain he was a shifter. She found drops of blood collected on vegetation, the light rain already diluting it, and followed them to the river where the trail ended.

In the misty rain, she glanced in the direction the river was flowing, and thought she saw a wolf’s head bobbing up and down in the water. She couldn’t be certain, considering the conditions: the water was dark, the object was far away, and the day was overcast.

She continued to watch until whatever it was disappeared beyond a bend in the river. Her heart pounding, she ran in the direction of her cabin, hoping her brother was there and could tell her what was going on. If she didn’t need to hang onto her rifle and cell phone, she would have shifted and run as a wolf. Much faster that way.

She was glad the wolf was no longer chasing her brother, but she did hate that she’d had to shoot him. With their shifter ability to heal faster than humans, he would be fine in no time.

As soon as the cabin came into view, she hurried to the front door, unlocked it, and called out to her brother. He didn’t respond, and she didn’t hear him in the back bedroom. She stalked back to the room, but he wasn’t there. Why wouldn’t he have come here? Unless he was afraid of bringing the big, bad wolf to their doorstep.

For now, she had other business to take care of. She left a message for her brother, telling him to call her at once, that she was working with some jaguar shifters. And that Douglas was in dire straits after someone attacked him. She would be staying at the red wolf pack’s ranch part of the time. She considered trying to track down her brother as a wolf, but with the other wolf wounded and leaving this area, she figured Miles would be okay for now.
Teaming up with jaguars was something totally new for her. Never in a million years would she have believed she’d be working with a combined force of jaguar shifters and a wolf; and with another, if they could solicit his help. On the way over to her cabin, Leidolf had informed her about a hardcore Navy SEAL, also turned PI —and from what she’d read about his profile, a loner in his investigative work—who was in the area and was also investigating the attack on Douglas. From a photo Leidolf had sent to the team, he was one hot looking specimen of a wolf and single, though she just happened to notice that information by chance. And he looked a hell of a lot like the guy she’d seen at the Kitty Cat Club in San Diego. The good Samaritan. That meant he had been a wolf all along. She should have known.
She quickly packed a bag and left to join the shifters at the cabin nearby to meet up with the SEAL wolf, hoping she’d hear from her brother soon. She also put in a call to Leidolf for an update on Douglas’s condition.

***
Vaughn bobbed up and down in the icy water, thankful his wolf’s double coat protected him from the chilling cold. He had to take care of his wound first, hoping it wasn’t too bad and he would heal quickly enough. He was certain the gray wolf couldn’t have suddenly armed himself with a rifle, so he was still running as a wolf, and that meant Vaughn could try to find his scent again. What if he had an accomplice? Maybe that’s why he howled. To get help from a wolf shifter friend or pack member who would shoot Vaughn instead of coming to his aid as a wolf. The shooter wouldn’t have been some random hunter then. A marksman lying in wait while Vaughn tried to take down the wolf seemed too damned convenient to be mere coincidence.

***

Okay, so how did I come up with this idea? I wanted to include jaguars and wolves in this venture–and a hot SEAL wolf. That was it. At the end of the previous jaguar book, A Very Jaguar Christmas, I had mentioned trouble in Portland, Oregon, where a red wolf pack lives. I hadn’t mentioned them in a long time, so I wanted to set the story there. And I wanted to have jaguars causing trouble for wolves. I wanted an exciting beginning–but I wanted it to be sexy. But it had to include both jaguars and wolves. But it also had to focus on the romance between one couple. And it had to have shifting. And romance. And conflict.

I’d watched a show about treasure hunters stealing from each other in deep sea dives. The wolf series is so long running, that every one of them has to be different from the rest, and I’d never had a treasure hunting story before. So after much writing and rewriting, I finally decided to make treasure hunting at the root of it.

And that’s how I came up with SEAL Wolf Undercover!

Preorders available now!

Have a happy, non-conflict-filled day!!!

Taming the Wild Cougar…how did I get the idea?

Years and years and years ago, I read a romance where a cop had taken a nurse hostage because he had seen her give first aid training to a bunch of Boy Scouts, and he was wounded and on the run. The “good” guys are out to take him down, and he’s got to solicit her help to prove his innocence.

So I wanted to have a hero who is undercover, wounded by another cougar, and seeking medical supplies in a clinic that is closed for the night. Except the doctor is napping in her office before she takes off on her camping trip. He didn’t mean to take her hostage. But he doesn’t have much choice. She tries to get away, to warn the sheriff–but inevitably–they are thrown into a situation they’re stuck with until they can find a way out. The story is completely different from the one I read so many years ago.

But that kernel of an idea stuck with me over all those years, and Taming the Wild Cougar was born. Every story is different. Sometimes I read a news report, or watch a movie, or think–what if? And a story is born.

It’s not easy. I may make it look easy. But it isn’t. I’m winding down on Bounty Hunter Gets Her Wolf. How to end it? I don’t know. How to make it more conflictive? I don’t know. Sexier? I don’t know. More wolfish as in more wolf scenes? I don’t know. lol

But I’ll get there. I just need to finish the book, then go back in and make it have more of all the elements that will ensure it is so much better. To make it fun. Believable. A book readers don’t want to put down, and then want the next one.

Taming the Wild Cougar

Cougar shifter, Dr. Kate Parker, is planning her annual camping vacation alone this year. She runs into trouble before she even starts her trip in the form of one wounded, hot cougar undercover cop—or so he says. He’s not going along with just her tender loving care because he came into town as a cougar, and he needs her help to get him back to where he can take up the search to look for an arms dealer, who just happens to be a cougar too.
Leyton Hill slipped into the unlocked, darkened clinic, figuring his luck had just changed. Except he doesn’t plan for the good doctor to be napping in her office. Taking him on her vacation wasn’t in the plan, and taking her hostage, hadn’t been either, but now she’s stuck with him until he can get back to his mission and the chase at hand. It appears the roles have reversed and who’s holding whom hostage now?

Excerpt for Taming the Wild Cougar:

But then Dr. Kate Parker saw what he was looking for. A photo on her desk of her and her cat, Sheba, in her arms. Another with Sheba catching her favorite pink ball mid-air.

She knew in an instant, that’s why he wanted to come to her office. To see if she had a family portrait. He was good. If he was an undercover cop, he had to be good at his job.

“I’ll show you a picture of my husband. Let me have the phone.”

He obliged, but stayed right next to her as she pulled up her photo gallery, his hot piney-woods scent drifting to her. Trying to ignore his close proximity, which was damn hard to do as he breathed down her neck, she quickly searched through the pictures until she came to one and clicked on it. She hoped he’d believe that the deputy sheriff who owned the cabins on Lake Buchanan, Chase Buchanan, was her husband.

“Here’s Chase. My husband.” Best of all, she’d given him a big hug for having taken her to the firing range and teaching her how to fire her 9 mm and his wife had shot the picture of them.

As long as he didn’t see the pictures of Chase and his wife, Shannon, and their adorable babies, Kate thought it looked convincing.

“Nice,” the man said, studying the photo way too long. “May I?” He waited for her to hand the phone to him, but she tried to turn it off. He took it from her and flipped through the pictures. “And this is his sister and her babies?”

“Uh-yeah.”

He flipped through several more photos. “No pictures of her husband. He must be a really close brother.”

“He is.”

He glanced at the walls in her office. Her medical credentials. More pictures of Sheba. Her Black Belt First Degree certificate in ju jitsu. Great.

Then he focused on her desk, and specifically her large desk pad calendar and studied it. “Vacation from now until Monday, returning two weeks. Rockies.” He shifted his gaze to her. “You and who else?”

“My husband, Chase, of course.”

“What happened to your three kids?”

She twisted her mouth in annoyance.

He cast her a small smile. “Why don’t we go to your house?”

“Sure. You can explain to my husband why you’re running around naked, wounded, and forcing me to take you places.”

“I could. Let’s go.”

Quickly, she tried to toss her lab coat onto her chair, just in case anyone might notice the blood and she always hung up her lab coat. But Mr. Undercover Cop looked at it and smiled at her, not in an amused way. More sardonically, like he knew just what she was up to. “Why don’t we take it with you so you can wash it out? Blood can leave permanent stains.”

He caught her glancing at her desk drawer. “Got something in there you need to take with you on your trip?” He still had her phone in his hand, but dropped the trash bag and bunched gown on top of her desk to free his other hand. He reached past her, brushing against her, and pulled the drawer open.

When he grabbed for the gun in her drawer, she saw her chance at escape and made a dash for the door.

So you see, you never know what’s going to happen in the cougar-run town of Yuma Town. Never.

I get ideas for things all the time for just everything. Do you ever see something and think what a neat idea that is, and want to do something in your yard, or house, or writing, or photograph something similar?

But no matter what you do, it will be yours. Your voice, your way. And who knows but you might inspire others.

Oh, and Taming the Wild Cougar’s audiobook should be out soon. Just need the narrator to fix four issues and then it goes in for final proofing!

Have a great inspirational day!

Earth Day…so?

I used to plant tons of trees, when I had a lot of acreage–I love forests. But I was so disappointed to learn the people who bought my home in Oklahoma clearcut most of the trees. Beautiful pines, helped to stop erosion on the hillside, and they provided homes for birds, beauty, solitude. There’s no prettier sound than wind blowing through a forest and hearing the rustle of branches or pine needles.

We have old forest in and around our neighborhood. Most new home developments, they just clearcut the trees, leaving barren land. But here, I have several old pines. And behind me, one of my neighbors has beautiful oaks. He wants to cut them down. Why? Because they drop leaves and twigs and he has to pick them up. Really? He has to cut the grass too!  Maybe he should dig it up?

In Texas heat, shade trees are at a premium. They’re beautiful. You see them towering a hundred feet above the homes. Why would you want to cut them down??? I had to have one of the pine trees taken down because it had died, but that’s the only reason to do so, or if the roots are getting into the foundation.

But with such a small lot, which I’m thankful for in that it’s much easier to water and maintain, I’m restricted to small shrubs and flowers and such for the most part. Though….I’d like to get some more crepe myrtles, they’re like small trees.

I have planted all of the flowers here, the zinnias from seeds which should turn into flowers soon, the marigolds and daylilies and Mexican heather, the dianthus, and much more. Many will come back next year as they’re perennials. Many will reseed and return even if they’re annuals. I started last year with the daylilies and a few salvia and coneflowers, and the builders had planted coreopsis and snapdragons. So each year, the flowerbeds should be even more beautiful. Oh, and sunflowers. They’re coming up from the seeds dropped by the birds, but I love seeing them in the garden as they remind me of my father who used to plant them.

What I love about the flowers, besides the color and vibrancy, is that the honeybees, bumblebees, hummingbirds and butterflies love them.

So think about Earth Day, and if you can, plant something to give back to nature.

Have a lovely day!

Ever Feel Like You’re Stuck?

white bear with lamb and bunny and fox 900 _9884

Having fun with taking some pictures of something in a glass ball. I need an extra pair of hands! This was my first picture, but I need to play around with it some more to get it right.

If you use a glass ball to capture an image, the image is upside down, and you can just flip it right side up with 180 degree rotation.

Do you ever feel you’re stuck in a glass ball with no place to go?

Break out of your mold. Do something different. Change your routine. Live a little. Live a lot.

Off to help with the grandbaby. AND work on word count. Sometimes that is impossible. Most times that’s impossible. At 3/4ths of the way done!
