I was in the middle of working on this when my computer froze. Either the fae or gremlins…not sure which…wreaking havoc with me already.

I have to admit, for Halloween, I loved being a fairy princess. I know, illusions of grandeur. But I loved all the tales of princes and princesses, though I envisioned the princess would be spunky and protect the prince as much as he protected her. Fight back! Don’t be a doormat to the old wicked witch. And that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. 🙂

Have a fun one!

Winged Predator of the Night

owl-with-flameWise old owl waiting for a meal on the run at the bewitching hour.

It’s foggy out this morning, but not all that cool, so I imagine the morning is filled with mosquitoes. Which means I took one picture, walked through a spiderweb, have no idea where the spider is, and that was enough for me. 🙂

I was attempting to capture the fountains lit up at night, but the mosquitoes started attacking and then my battery died, so this was the last picture I managed to shoot. I will have to try with the fountains when it ever gets colder! 🙂

Have a great one!

Early Morning Lights

early-morning-1000iso-900-foutain-lights-005We had really dense fog this morning, but it had burned off quite a bit by the time I got myself out the door. I wanted to see if the fountains were lit up in the early morning, but they aren’t. 🙁

So that means I really will have to do this at night. I tried the other night, but between the mosquitoes and then my battery dying, I couldn’t wait for the lights to come on.

early-morning-lights-1000iso-900-006Light fog and lanterns glowing.

I want to learn how to take low light pictures, and these are turning out nicely. Believe me, when I took interesting shots like this in Scotland and Daytona Beach at night, many were awful. Some turned out. But I’m trying to learn how to ensure MORE turn out and not just at the photo god’s whim. 🙂

early-morning-1000iso-blue-sky-fog-lights-003You can see the foggy trees way in the background. I love fog, unless I have to drive in it. So I was disappointed I hadn’t gotten out earlier to take some pictures of it. But I will persist.

And that’s the key to accomplishment. Never give up! Never surrender!

Have a great day!!!

Wacky Wednesday Excerpt Day on Friday: Legend of the White Wolf

Legend of the White Wolf

Arctic werewolves in a romantic suspense.

When I wrote Legend of the White Wolf, I was still in the believing stage that I wouldn’t sell any more wolf stories… you know, one was a miracle, then two was nice, but it took the publisher a year to decide it would fly, and the third and fourth book sold as a package deal, but that time just on a pitch. So for the first 4 stories, I wrote them as separate packs. Not connected, except that one wolf kept popping up in all of them. So his story was after that. Readers demanded that. Leidolf was a red wolf with a red wolf pack. All the stories were unique. And that’s what I really wanted to ensure. That with each story, they had to be different.

Billionaire in Wolf’s Clothing makes Book 20 in the series. Can you believe it? And I’ve just finished up the next 3 books in the series and turned them in. And I have 3 more to write now. So that will be 26 in the series. So far. Every one of them has to be unique in some way. I try to base them on real wolves, so in Alpha Wolf Need Not Apply–she is in charge of her own pack. Just like some she-wolves are that have lost their pack mate. But sometimes a persistent male falls head over tail for the she-wolf, and after she quits chasing him off…she falls for him too. Prologue

The black bear was running away a hell of a lot faster than Owen Nottingham and his P.I. partner David Davis thought capable. Their hunting guide, Trevor Hodges, yelled at them to keep up, but at the rate the bear was going, Owen and David would never last. Already Owen had shin splints, and his side was aching something fierce, and damn, here he thought he was in good shape.

They couldn’t use dogs on the bear this late in the year in Maine, but the owner of Back Country Tours, Kintail Silverman got around that by sending his pet wolves on the hunt. Made Owen feel like he was part of a wolf pack, hunting for survival, the sleek white furred creatures diving around snow-laden firs, blending in, exhilarated, hunting together as a cooperative team. Although the experience would be more pleasurable if their other partners were with them, Cameron MacPherson, who wouldn’t hunt for anything other than criminals, and Gavin Summerfield, who’d rather stay in Seattle and work, than fly anywhere. But the four of them were like a wolf pack, solving crimes together as a collective unit and socializing as the best of friends throughout the good times and bad.

sabine-arctic-wolf-snowstorm-warm-text640x427

So Owen wished they could share hunting excursions together, too.

He noticed then only snowy woods in front of them, the wolves and bear lost in the forest ahead as the chilly wind howled through the trees. Trevor was still keeping a good pace in the distance. For being a white-haired old guy, he was lean and in incredibly great shape.

David had dropped way behind, but Owen was too busy trying to keep up the chase to wait for David to catch up. One last day before their hunt ended. And hell, they’d tried to bag a bear for the last four years without any luck. The way the bear was outdistancing them in a hurry in the Maine wilderness, Owen was beginning to lose hope they’d make it this time either. But it was the closest they’d come.

When Owen didn’t hear David’s heavy breathing behind him, or his size ten boots trudging through the deep snow, he turned and looked to see how far behind he was. David was holding his thighs, leaning over, gasping for breath.

“David, you all right?” Owen asked, knowing it was a dumb question, when he figured David was trying to catch his second wind and couldn’t answer anyway.

David motioned him on, wheezing, his face red and pinched with pain. “Get the bear! I’m fine. Go. I’ll catch up.”

But it wasn’t like David not to keep up on a hunt and Owen ran back to check on him. “What’s wrong?” Owen asked, grabbing his arm to steady him.

“Go. You’ll…never…forgive…me…if we…” David clutched his chest.

The wolves and Trevor circled back and joined them. The old man shook his head. “Chest pains?”

Through clenched teeth, David growled, “From…running…damn it.”

David was the oldest of the four partners in their private investigator practice, but at thirty-five, David couldn’t be having a heart attack.

With millions of acres of forest land all around them, they were too deep into the wilderness to get help. Cell phones wouldn’t work out here. Owen knew CPR, but…

He helped David to sit. “What are you feeling?” he asked, trying to disguise the anxiety in his voice, although he couldn’t hide a deepening frown, and David noticed.

“Don’t be a…worry…” David clutched his chest even harder, his face sweating in the frigid air.

“We can’t get any help to him way out here,” Trevor said quietly. “If he’s having a heart attack, it’s not a bad way to go. Quick, no lingering illness.”

“No!” Owen snapped. “Do you have any aspirin?” How could he let his friend from childhood and one of the best partners he’d had in law enforcement before they’d left the force die on him? He couldn’t. “I know CPR.”

“It won’t be enough.” Trevor sounded like the voice of reason, but Owen didn’t want to hear it.

The image of David lunging in front of him, taking a bullet in the shoulder two years ago, flashed across Owen’s mind. He wouldn’t let him go. He couldn’t.

The wolves watched silently, almost sympathetically as if one of their pack members was in trouble, their ears perked, their tongues hanging out, panting after the long run.

His hand clutching David’s shoulder, Owen clenched his teeth to bite back the overwhelming feeling of hopelessness. “Can’t we do something? Anything?”

“Possibly,” Trevor said, “but it will change his life and yours, forever.”

“I’d do anything to save my friend’s life,” Owen said, figuring Trevor was thinking in terms of if he had enough money, they could air evac him out somewhere, maybe in a clearing where the loggers had been.

Trevor put a hand on Owen’s shoulder. “You sure?”

“Anything, damn it. However much it costs, it’s worth it.”

Trevor looked back at the wolves. The biggest one bowed its head slightly, then bared his teeth and lunged.

Before Owen could fathom what was happening, the wolf bit David in the arm. He cried out in pain.

Owen swung his rifle to his shoulder to shoot the beast, when he caught a blur of white fur in his peripheral vision, right before one of the other wolves pounced on him.

Early, Late, or On Time?

When I was in the army, I had a boss once who said he didn’t want us there to give a briefing early or late. He wanted us there on time. “You’re wasting the government’s time if you’re early. You’re wasting the general’s time if you’re late. So come on time.”

What are you normally? Always running late? Have to be there early? Never want to waste time and are right there on the button?

You know if you’re running late, nothing will go your way. You’ll get behind slower traffic, get a flat, run into every red light. If you’re early, all the lights will be green, no traffic to speak of, car’s running fine and you’re there even earlier than you had wanted to be. I know. Because I always try to be early anywhere I go. But the moment I’m running behind on time….

I turned in the changes to SEAL Wolf Undercover, caught up on my word count on Double Cougar Trouble, and finally figured out what I was going to do with White Wolf and sent in the materials I needed to–long synopsis, short synopsis, etc.

For a second, that means all I have to do is finish writing Cougar Trouble, unless I’m forgetting something. 🙂

blue-berries-on-plant-900-058I took my walk yesterday and came across these beautiful blue berries. Do you notice all the pretty things around you when you’re out and about?

And then the new sky pencil holly are already attracting birds. This chickadee was diving in and out of the spindly, newly planted shrubs.bird-on-new-holly-900-005

And then a blue jay came to explore. Just add a little plant life and the animals will find a home.

blue-jay-new-holly-900-006I forgot my excerpt yesterday, so will try to do that tomorrow. 🙂 Otherwise, it’s back to writing and walking and taking pictures.

Turned In! Need a Change! Still Working on!

That’s the life of a writer.

I received beta reader notes back on White Wolf Christmas, made the changes, and sent it in. Yeah! It’s always a feel good time. And then my editor called and said that SEAL Wolf Undercover needed one minor thing to be looked at, so it should be just a sentence change. Need to do that today or tomorrow, and it’s good! And the cover looks great. Can’t wait to show it off.

Finding Fall Where We Can

Finding Fall Where We Can

The white bokeh is the early morning light shining through the shaded trees and the yellow some more golden leaves.

I’m still working on Double Cougar Trouble and the pitch for White Wolf (title to be determined).  I need to have SEAL Wolf done by sometime in November, but I’ll fix it in the next day or so. And the pitch needs to be turned in by Nov 1st, so I’ll work on it in the next day or so. And I’m behind on Cougar word count, but I had to finish White Wolf Christmas, took my walk, even though it was maybe 2 miles instead of 3, but at least I did it. Saw three fawns, but by the time I dropped off Max and returned with the camera (I had taken him for a mailbox run, and a walk around the neighborhood rather than a real walk), I saw this path that led to another one by one of the fountain ponds. The one where I  had taken pictures of the great blue heron and white heron. When we walked into the woods, there were 3 fawns standing there. They’re pretty tame.  Used to dogs and people.

River Birch?

River Birch and its interesting peeling bark

But the deer will eat your hibiscus, as my neighbor can attest to, and another said the same. And the fawns were gone.

Caracal...a shifter?

Caracal…a shifter?

I had a lunch with another author, so much fun finding another who lives nearby. She’s thirty minutes away, lives on a golf course, and some people throw out corn for the deer. So she sees herds of them. Not good. Why? They attract predators. Okay, so you’re thinking Houston, Texas, nah, right? Yep. She has the deer carcasses to prove it. There’s a cougar in them thar woods.

double-cougar-trouble-shadowed-different-hair-light-source-900

I picked up a harness for the dogs so hopefully that will help stop them from pulling so hard and choking themselves. I do what the training says, walk slower, forcing them to slow down, turn around so they pay attention to where I’m going, but I’m not patient enough with it. I want to get some exercise, take some pictures, and get back to writing. And I don’t want them hurting themselves. So I picked up two different kinds and I’m going to try them.

fall-leaf-green-background-900-002So I have a lot of different photo tip sites sending me daily tips. I love it. I love learning. And one of them was about taking pictures of fall colors. Don’t just take a picture of the beautiful trees in fall display, but something else, like a collection on the ground, etc. Welllllllll for me….finding fall colors isn’t easy. We don’t have huge beautiful fall scenes. We have a few leaves here or there. A leaf here or there. But I love a challenge. So yesterday, no fawns to film, one white heron, the fountains all looked the same, so I wanted to do something with fall.

I have to watch out for spiderwebs in the woods. lol

Okay, off to type up notes and get into the swing of things, walking, taking pictures and then settling down to write.

Happy hump day!

Corded Italian Sheepdogs and Shrimp and Socializing

corded-dogThis is Winston. 🙂 <3 A Bergamasco: Corded Italian sheepdog

shrimpI’m in a luncheon group that meets once a month, sometimes more and so this is what I had–grilled shrimp pasta, and Winston was one of the outdoor guests.

In my stories, I add food. BECAUSE characters have to eat. But also it shows who cooks, who doesn’t know how to, interaction, conversation. Hmmm, nowadays, I should just write that the two people were playing on their phones while they ate.

dinner-out-the-art-of-conversation-640x441comicbookWe try to write realistically in our stories even if we write fantasy so readers will be grounded. So why not write what we really see? As a commentary, sure, but to show characterization in a romance, it won’t work. Two lovebirds sit at the table waiting on their pizza while they’re playing: insert game here..until pizza arrives. Then it’s time to take a few bites and continue to play.

While we were at the luncheon, conversation drifted from raising dogs and the silly things they do, losing pets, training them, health issues–one lady had broken her ankle–and about the people at the table behind us both exclusively on their cells.

Maybe those people never had anything to say to each other anyway. Who knows. But I’d walk through the grocery store in Waco and see 3 college girls together, every one of them on their phones. Walking at the same time! I mean, me? I’d have to stop to text or I’d run into someone. 🙂 Yes, I’m a big time multi-tasker, but walking and texting is not one of the combos I can do successfully.

What a cupcake, eh?

What a cupcake, eh?

So back to food and writing. I try to be fairly realistic in my writing–my wolves and jaguars and cougars are not vegan. One time, I wrote the wolves ate a lot of salmon. I think they were in the wild, and they had to eat what they could. NO one wanted me to write about eating bunnies or taking down Bambi’s mom or dad. 🙂  So salmon was acceptable. A reviewer commented that the author must have loved eating a lot of salmon. Nope, not this author. I like a lot of shell food–lobster, shrimp, scallops. I love halibut and talipia and haddock and tuna fish, but if the fish is really fishy tasting…nope.

Legend of the White Wolf

Arctic werewolves in a romantic suspense.

Often, though, I do write about what I like to eat. In one of my Christmas stories, SEAL Wolf Christmas, I wrote about my favorite Christmas treat of all. It only comes out during the holidays–Haviland thin mints. They’re dark chocolate, thin, and divine. And so the heroine is looking for a pregnancy kit for a teen waiting in the car when she spies her Haviland thin mints. After that, she’s taken hostage….etc. And so getting sidetracked by her favorite treat could have been her undoing.

A SEAL Wolf Christmas, Oct 2013

A SEAL Wolf Christmas, Oct 2013

So adding food in a story should be important, the characters gotta eat. But it should help to add something to the story. One of my favorite comments from fans is that while they were reading my story, they had a craving for whatever the food was. 🙂 That’s the power of suggestion.

I’ve had editors take out my meals, and then another editor will come in and say, they ordered, but they never ate. Huh, well, tell that to the other editor who took out the meals. I don’t get into detail about every juicy bite, but just enough to know they ate. And if the eating isn’t important because I need to build a scene around it, I just make it short. They grabbed a sandwich and took off.

I’ve written action packed stories where the characters didn’t eat or sleep for 72 hours. lol Not that I meant to do that… So see? Sleeping and eating are important.

In White Wolf Christmas, the heroine makes the hero make the cookies that he caused her to burn. And that is a fun scene. It’s not just about baking cookies, it’s all the fun surrounding it.

Speaking of writing….

betweenwolfhardplace_selectHere is the beautiful cover for Between a Wolf and a Hard Place, coming next spring.

And I have another cover that hasn’t been approved for the next title, SEAL Wolf Undercover, and the mss was approved.

They’re working on White Wolf Christmas’s cover also now!

Okay, I need to walk. I’ve walked for 4 days and I don’t feel like it this morning. Bad me.On my walk yesterday-I’ve been really trying hard to get bokeh in my pictures, so I thought this might be fun with the berries behind the wild grass stalks.

grasses-aganst-berry-bokeh-on-walk-900-005

I have a luncheon today with a fellow writer who is a fan and just discovered I live in the same area as her, so that’s fun! Need to get to work on something…14,000 words to go on Cougar.

Have a wonderful day doing whatever you’re going to do!

Sky Pencil Holly for Tiny Lots–Like Writing Shorter for Tiny Pubs or Focusing on Less in a Photo

sky-pencil-holly-first-ones-900-001These holly only grow two feet wide and 10 feet tall. I wanted to put some along the fence on the side yards where it is too narrow for anything else. What I love about them is my fence is 6 foot, and these grow to about 10 feet, so hopefully, they will provide a little more privacy, a little bit of noise reduction, and most of all, I love the look of vegetation. It softens the look of the fence.

The two I have here are just accent plants alongside pentas flowers that are annuals, and the burford holly that are slow growing but as they grow, they will be about 5 foot tall. This shows one that is really shaded back at the old house. The big leafed plant around it is fig. It’s kind of a fun plant next to the tiny leafed sky pencil holly. This one is about 8 foot tall or taller. What I love about them is they’re fast growers and evergreen.

sky-pencil-holly-427x640

And here are the new ones I picked up. I wanted smaller pots of them, figuring they would be a lot easier to plant. And normally in about three years, they’ll be the same size. But all they had were 5 foot hollies and I wanted to get them started now that the weather is a little bit cooler.

sky-pencil-holly-900-new-5-foot-ones-004It was really nice out last night, and I kept thinking I just needed to plant them. At least one of them.

new-sky-pencil-holly-against-fence-900-001But it didn’t take any time at all, to my surprise, and I had all three planted. Maybe I’ll do more. But at least from my window while I work, I can see greenery and not just a blank fence. 🙂

Okay, I’m behind after walking 4 miles yesterday, going to a luncheon, shopping for plants and Halloween candy–don’t do like I did and buy stuff you figure you’ll eat if you don’t have enough trick-or-treaters–everyone at the luncheon said the same thing, they already ate the candy, so I got some I really won’t eat–and planting hollies.

Planting in tiny lots means really planning the landscape, not over planting, growing something that looks tiny in its one gallon pot and in three years, it’s 10 feet wide and 10 feet tall. Well, maybe it takes a little longer than that. But…you know what I mean. It’s the same with writing. When you write short–you have to plan, keep it simple, not overgrow the elements, and keep it tidy.

With photography, same thing! I saw the coolest picture where the scene was busy with people, but the photographer snapped one clear person moving among the chaos. It was really eye catching.

grasses-against-busy-grass-background-900-040These wild grasses had too busy a background. For three days I tried to capture a picture of them that looked more like these grasses.

wild-grasses-great-bokeh-900-041And I did it yesterday finally!

a-mode-f4-early-morning-grasses-bokeh-900-004The color is a little different from the original photo because I was shooting in earlier light. But what I was trying to do was showcase them off a background that has a lot more bokeh. I had the F-stop at 8 on the original picture. Same with the middle one, but it turned out beautifully. On the third one, I had it at F-4.

Okay time to get back to the book!

Have a lovely day!

Temps Dropped in the Mornings!

puppies-looking-out-window-in-cold-900-001But the house can be stuffy, so I have been opening the windows to let the cool air in. Here, Max and Tanner are enjoying watching out the window and smelling all the scents.

50mm-900-orange-butterfly-on-butterfly-bush-051I was experimenting with the 50mm lens to see if it made any difference in the photos. The butterflies are all over the kaleidoscope butterfly bush, and this time I could get close without disturbing them.

On Yesterday’s Walk…

wild-grasses-great-bokeh-900-041

Wild grasses

Sometimes something that might be overlooked can make an interesting picture. I love wild grasses. As long as they’re not growing in my yard. But on a wilderness walk, they add interest to the landscape.

sun-rays-fountain-fall-900-029Sun flare and can you see our fall colors? No? Well, see the three or four orange leaves? That’s it!

great-blue-herron-900-076A great blue heron! I love reflections in the water, and it was especially nice to capture the great blue heron in the water. Now, I had Tanner with me, and he was soooooo good. Whenever I stop to take pictures, he lies down for a rest. Luckily, he didn’t see the herons. Well, and luckily I didn’t scare them off either.

white-and-great-blue-herrons-900-078You can see the white heron in the background.

rainbow-fountain-900-052And I’d taken a number of pictures of the fountain from the other side, but when I was leaving, I figured I’d had enough shots of the fountain and was just going to walk on by. But I glanced at it anyway, and saw the rainbow. I had to take several steps back to capture it, and rainbows move and fade, so I took several shots, hoping to capture it before it faded. These were so much better than the others I had gotten at a different fountain because the backdrop was so much better.

tanner-lying-on-ground-while-im-taking-pictures-900-016Tanner being an angel. When I was taking pictures of the pink fountain grass, he was lying down in the shade. He is really good about this. As soon as I start taking pictures in a spot, he lies down and waits for me to finish. I just step on his leash so he doesn’t wander off or chase something, and then snap away. Both of the dogs will do this together too, but my problem is when someone comes to walk by us if they’ve got another dog. So it’s just easier to deal with one, trying to train them to behave while on a walk.

pink-fountain-grass-and-fountain-900-018I love the pink fountain grasses, and figure they’ll begin to fade, so wanted to get another shot before they’re no longer pretty like this.

Okay, got to write. I had a million things going on yesterday, including the two-mile walk (beautiful, cool weather), and so need to get focused on figuring out the plot for the next White Wolf Book, did a lot of brainstorming yesterday on it, and keep up with the word count on Cougar Trouble.

Have a super, fun day!!!
