Blue Bird

Still have an awful sore throat. Hoping it’s not strep. They say young children under 5 shouldn’t get it, and adults don’t either, but little one goes to daycare 3 days a week, so it’s like going to school and picking up everything. She’s had strep before, and I’ve had it after she was sick and then I became sick.

The problem is she’s always wanting hugs and to sit on my lap and read stories, and then she’s sneezing and coughing, and the next thing you know, Grandma’s got it. But I still wouldn’t give up the hugs and lap sitting to read her stories.

I did manage to finish proofing Joy to the World and sent it in and wrote 2,000 words on Wolf in Need. I was awake most of the night with this awful sore throat, but it’s feeling not as bad this morning when I swallow. Here’s hoping it will go away on its own.

Have a beautiful day! It’s nice and warm here, and feels great!

Bath Time for Birds

I’ve never seen a bird take a bath in the fountain. Smart bird. Hot day. This juvenile cardinal was having a ball.

I managed 2,000 words yesterday. I wanted to write more. I was reading an article about sleep. Six hours or less a day is equivalent to 2 days with no sleep as far as the brain functioning well. Okay, so I definitely need brain function to write. Now how do I sleep better????

Baby is on her way. Bug terminator better be on his way. I have a swarm of red wasps in my foyer. They don’t seem to be building a nest, not that I can see. Though I am avoiding the area. I tried taking pictures from inside the house. I had to have my daughter drop my granddaughter off in through the garage until the terminator gets here.

One day when I lived in Crawford, Texas, I was watching out the window as I was writing my story, and saw several bluebirds diving at a wasp nest they were building. Every time a new wasp showed up to add to the nest, one of the bluebirds would dive down and the wasp was history. It was wonderful!!! I was having a terrible time with the wasps. Hate using hornet spray, but the best little bug killers around? Bluebirds. I’ve never seen anything like it!

Have a wasp-free day!!!

Hungry, Cold Birds

Red-bellied woodpecker, blue jay and baby bluebird.

Well, it was cold, cold, cold out, but I was trying to finish the grass and weed pulling before it gets hot, hot, hot. So I did all the backyard flowerbeds, shrieked in terror when, without having gardening gloves on like I should have, nearly pulled up a snake with the weeds. I got my shovel out, scooped the cold critter up, and put him on the island of plants in the middle of our street. Hopefully, he stays there. That’s the second snake I’ve found in my plants this year while pulling weeds. They’re good, not evil, but I still don’t want them in the plants, giving me a heart attack.

I kept thinking, people are going to think I’m planning to dig up the irises in the island flowerbed. I mean, who would carry a shovel across the street otherwise, right? A neighbor was leaving in her car, and rolled down her window, and said, “Snake, right?”

I laughed. “Yes! But I don’t want him in my yard.”

She motioned to the island flowerbed and said, “That’s a great place for him.”

Yep, if he stays there! I put on my gloves after that. lol

So I reached 7,000 words yesterday SEAL Wolf Surrender, and I’m off to write. You know, I only tell you this to keep me accountable, whether you want to hear it or not. Just so you know. lol If I tell someone, then I feel guilty if I don’t get to my word count each day (minus the two days I have baby–between running after her and being worn out by the time she leaves, I need me time)…but even then, I try to get some word count to get ahead. In fact, I’d blocked out the week for jury duty, so I wasn’t scheduled to write anything. That means I’m 7,000 words ahead. I was supposed to write my first 2,000 today. 🙂 But I tell myself, they don’t count–in other words–I don’t get a reprieve. I just have them in case something happens and I CAN’T write.

So with that said, I need to get my word count and make a bear!!! Have a lovely day!

Swallowtail Butterfly & Birds

Okay, so this morning it’s hot and muggy and I was thinking of running out early to get errands run, but then I saw a hummingbird feeding off one of the flowers. And a tufted titmouse, and I thought, forget the errand running, get the camera out, clean the windows, and take pictures.

You see where my priorities are?

Have a great and wonderful day! 🙂  Running errands is overrated.

Female Bluebird, Red Dragonfly, Neighbor on Roof

female-bluebird-700I’ve seen several bluebirds recently. She was sitting on the tree branch, then on my fence. They don’t eat from my feeders, just eat the bugs flying around.

It’s going to be 94 today, ugh, but the temperatures are dropping to the 80’s after the next couple of days, and 50’s to 60’s in the mornings. Yay! It just seems WRONG to be 94 in the middle of October! And no rain in sight. *sigh*red-dragonfly-yellow-sunflower-900-134

So I was working on getting the picture of the red dragonfly a couple of weeks ago, and just came across the photos. Here, my neighbor shouted from his rooftop to say hi.

eugene-900🙂

I’m trying not to disturb the red dragonfly since I’d NEVER seen one before in real life, so I finally had to take a picture of my neighbor cleaning off his roof, so I could get back to photographing the red dragonfly. He’s so funny, and they’re just the best neighbors anybody could ask for.

I finished White Wolf Christmas and sent it to another beta reader for final reading and then I’ll have to make the final changes and turn it in. But I’m also having fun reading posts on photography, what to do and what not to do. Did you know that it’s better not to cut off people at the joints? Wrists, knees, elbows? Who would have ever thought?

So I was reading up on cropping, but it all comes down to the artistic eye. What someone might think is the coolest shot, someone else might think it needs to be cropped in a different way completely. It’s a good idea to keep your original photo and then if you decide later you think the photo should be cropped a different way, you can.  In the photo of the bluebird, I wanted to capture a little of the green trees. But rule of thirds say to keep the image you want to focus not in the center. Her head is actually is not in the center. In portrait photography, one photographer says to keep the eyes above center if you come in for a close shot.

Now, in cropping, all this is just art, truly. So like I said, what someone might like, someone else might like a different view.

In one photo they showed, they had a cafe table and stairs going into a building, but what fascinated me more was the continuation of the alley, the people in the distance. So for me, it was the whole scene, not the table. I was mainly focused on the people. Crop that out, and the table wasn’t half as interesting. But was just me. Sometimes I will crop a picture in a bunch of different ways, just to see which is more appealing. Usually if it’s something small, I like to crop it closer to show off the details of the object. If you can get in closer when you take the original shot, all the better. But sometimes birds or bees or butterflies or dragonflies don’t like you sneaking up close to them.

In the red dragonfly photo, I wanted to center on the dragonfly and the wrought iron he’s balancing on.  On the right side, there’s not much but the fence in the picture. On the left side, the sunflower. So I thought it was cooler with cropping a bit of the sunflower in, but still crop closer so that the dragonfly is more visible, which meant cropping closer to the dragonfly. I think it makes for a more interesting picture.

With my neighbor, I could have cropped it closer to see him, but I liked showing the scale of him standing on the roof, and his crepe myrtle stretching to the sky.

If you think about it, writing is much like photography. You want to keep the good parts, the focal point, and crop out all the unnecessary stuff, the noise, the distractions.

Speaking of writing, it’s back to Double Cougar Trouble for me! 🙂

Hope your week is going well!

Bluebird and House Finches, Zombies and More…

house finiches and the fountain 057 (640x362)They found the fountain!

house finiches and the fountain 070 (640x326)When the bolder male flew up to the wrought iron, I didn’t realize his male and female friends were already perched up there.

house finiches and the fountain 071 (640x352)bluebird (640x427)And a beautiful male bluebird perched on the fence for pictures. Now, I saw him feeding the female on the fence yesterday, but they wouldn’t sit still long enough for me to capture them.

I finally found a couple of chairs I wanted. They rock and are super comfortable. But now I need cool weather to enjoy them. I actually wrote a couple of pages by hand earlier yesterday when we had a breeze and it was really nice. I tried in the early evening, mosquito landed on me, despite the breeze, and called it a night. We’ve had 5 case of West Nile Virus in this area, so don’t want to risk it.

Max kept wanting on my lap. More comfortable than the cement patio. But much hotter for the both of us.

The chairs aren’t as cute as the rattan that seems to be all the rage, but for durability, comfort, and easier cleaner, these will be better. I’m much more into comfort and ease of maintenance, not cute anyway.  But now I need to get more of something to match, or I can only have one guest at a time. 🙂

I’m fast and furiously, well, when I quit writing this blog, writing the end of SEAL Wolf Undercover. I have 4,000 words to go, wrote some of it last night by hand and am typing it up now, and then got to thinking about all the holes in my story while I was waking up. First, I’m having a nightmare about getting past zombies and not having my ticket properly punched to get on the bus and out of there. Then, I am running around trying to get it properly punched, and return with my friend to find the buses are all gone. Have you ever had days like that?

Then I wake up enough to realize I’m having a nightmare and start thinking about the problems with some of my plot ideas and now must go in and fix all the minor discrepancies while writing the rest of the book. It’s great. Really. When I get to this point, I’m in seventh heaven. Writing the end, means I get to start really editing, and make a fun story.

Then I got another promo blog to do, yikes, hold on, I’m sinking. And then two more this morning for a conference I’m going to next year. Ack.

Okay, okay, it will ALL get done. Eventually. Maybe that’s why I am feeling like the zombies are out to get me and I missed the bus.

Have a super great day.

Gone to the Birds…

The birds stop coming to the feeders and that means something is wrong. So I check, yep, seed is wet and moldy again. So I clean out the feeder, don’t put as much in this time. The no-melt suet was completely gone. All the birds loved it. I couldn’t find it again, so I picked up berry suet and the birds are happy. But also, I tried apples and they didn’t appeal to anyone. So I cute up an orange. The birds like that.

So here is a bluebird, mockingbird, uhm, cardinals got into my tomato plants, dove, mockingbird, mouth open (640x427) (2)gold finch (640x589)

gold finch (2) (640x540) and titmouse. A bluejay was there, but missed getting a picture. And the gold finches love the berry suet and the oranges.

And!!! A mockingbird was drinking from the new fountain. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the camera ready fast enough. But thanks to my friend, Donna, she said they will come. I just have to give things time. 🙂

Just like with writing. Have new hard drive. Hope this will solve all my problems!!

Bluebirds and Bugs!

mockingbird and blue bird 009The male bluebird was actually hidden in the rain gutter forever. He was working on all the bugs up there. What a lovely little bird! And so I was standing there holding my camera up forever, trying to get a shot of him. And there he was! And this time he held still for me.

female bluebird (611x640)A little while later, a female arrived. She landed on the fence and wouldn’t turn enough for me to really show off her blue feathers. They’re not really bright like the male’s, but they are a light blue.

But she decided this was her good side and would only show it off to me. 🙂

I’ve been moving burford holly to the backyard. It was underneath the front windows and gets to 8 feet in height. I didn’t want to have to sheer them constantly to keep them lower. I’m all for the low maintenance garden. The one where the plants are where they should be, with room to grow and not have to be cut back because they are too big for the spot they’re sitting in. The hollies have red berries the birds love to eat and they’re great protection for birds that want some cover.

moved burford holly 002 (640x427)

I also have a couple of skyrocket holly that will get to 10 feet, but only spread a foot wide. 🙂 Anyway, now the backyard will begin to look like a garden and not just like a backyard. 🙂 I bought some lavender also, just need to figure out where to plant it. Oh, and yes, the puppies are trying to eat the birdseed.

Have a great day! Back to edits on the The Viking’s Highland Lass!
