The Problem with Tropical Milkweed

This is tropical milkweed. The problem? The Monarch caterpillars ONLY eat off milkweed. The problem with tropical milkweed? It lasts and lasts and lasts, sometimes through mild winters, which means the butterflies lay their eggs too late here and don’t fly south early enough.

I know, because I’ve had them emerge when it’s too cold and they don’t survive. But I didn’t know there was another variety.

So I’ve been pulling up all my tropical milkweed, and I need to get a variety that isn’t tropical. Tropical, apparently, have multi-colored flowers like these. The other variety doesn’t. So I’m off on a search for a different milkweed to help sustain the monarchs.

In the meantime, I’ve got to get back to writing. I promised my granddaughter that I’d come and have lunch with her. She wants me to get the clown food, ie, Jack-in-the-Box chicken nuggets, but don’t forget the french fries. She reminded her mom not to pack her lunch for today. Last week was the first week we ate together. I loved it. She loved it.

When my kids went to public school, they didn’t have family visitation like this. It’s really nice.

AND we made some progress on reading!!!! I actually got one of the Dick and Jane books out for her and though the first few stories are super simple, those are words she needs to learn, so she was thrilled to finally be able read them, instead of just flash cards!!!

Okay, really off to work.

Monarch Butterfly Laying Eggs

Had a ball at my daughter and son-in-law’s house for his birthday. I had gotten him a board game, Everdell, that we played and though I said he should win, since it was his birthday, I won! Even better. lol My friend said, they let me win. Ha! They are super competitive. We’d never played the game so we learned as we went and while they were wheeling and dealing, I was doing my own little hope-this-works strategy and it did. They were both shocked. I really thought my daughter had won. I had double their score. Yay for Grandma!

We’re having hamburgers on the grill for Memorial Day.

So, I’m back to working on Red Wolf. Starting from the beginning and editing more. Though I still need to finish it. I’m hoping working from the beginning, I will know what I need to do. Talk to me, people! (I’m talking to the characters in the story–they really do their own thing and if I interfere, I go down the wrong path.)

We’re supposed to get rain. But that’s been the same old story for days now. You have 100% chance of rain at 8 am, delayed now until 2-3 pm, wait, 10 pm, no, 2 in the morning, change that to 8 am, how about 5-6 in the evening, okay, not until 8 in the morning, make that 5 in the evening… This is the ongoing changes from day to day. They say women change their minds, ha! The weather is worse!

So not a a drop of rain, yet we were supposed to have it from Friday through Thursday of next week. It’s Sunday now. Noon–that’s what they say now. Honest. Noon. Well actually: 12:15 to be precise.

Right. It will come if it comes. And right now? I have no faith in the weatherman. Just saying… lol

Delicate, but Hardy Little Monarch

It’s been a mild winter this year, giving the monarchs that wrapped themselves in their cocoons late a better chance at survival. This one I saw a couple of days ago, another, yesterday. I do have flowers they can sip the nectar from, so I hope that keeps them going.

I have a head cold and my head was splitting in two, my teeth all aching and feeling like they needed to be pulled. I’m bad about taking medicine for anything, figuring it will go away. But I was trying to concentrate on writing Highland Wolf and proofing the last 19 chapters of Night of the Billionaire Wolf and my head was hurting too much. I’d taken allergy medicines, but nothing was touching the pain. I finally went looking for something for my head and I found kid’s liquid tylenol, and other kids’ liquid medicines. Where are Grandma’s medicines when she needs them? lol

I finished proofing Night of the Billionaire Wolf and sent it off. Yay! So I’m back to writing on both Highland Wolf and the vampire book today.

Common Dragonfly and Monarch Butterfly laying eggs on milkweed.

We had wild thunderstorms all day yesterday and they’re continuing today. My word count is rising higher and higher, and I still haven’t figured out the end. Maybe it will still come to me. Hope springs eternal.

Spring is Here! I think!

Monarch butterflies frolicking in the garden, laying eggs, enjoying the warm weather and starting the next generation. I picked up flower seeds and dianthus and daylilies to plant.

Mostly sleeping through the night, yay! Coughing during the day, which I don’t mind as long as I sleep through the night! I wrote a little last night after the baby left. She’s so funny. When her mom and I talk, she talks too, just chattering away. Imitating us. lol But of course she doesn’t make any sense. Still, she knows a lot of vocabulary and sometimes she surprises us with words and phrases we didn’t think she knew. Plus, she repeats a lot of songs on TV, and she was counting with the Lil Baby Bum program yesterday. She can sort colors and she knows a lot of shapes. She’s growing up! It’s fun to see her learning so much. She has a mind of her own though!

Okay, I’m off to try and write some more, maybe get most of the rest of the book done today, baby’s here tomorrow, and then on Thursday I hope to finish any last scenes. I still need to write 3 more. After that, I have to read it all the way through.

Biology 101 for Baby

I always take baby out for some time with the flowers and let her touch them, but we also saw a monarch butterfly on the milkweed, and a skipper, and two baby Carolina anoles. I wore her out, which is great, but she also wore me out!

Finished revising Silver Wolves Making Spirits Bright last night and handed it back to my first beta reader and today I am back to Cougar Magic. Though I do still need to get the dog food! And we’re having all these beautiful storms and NO rain. ugh.

Wildlife at the Arboretum

When I think of arboretums, I think of flowers and other kinds of gardens. We saw a Japanese garden, hosta woodland garden, fern wooded garden, herbs, vegetable, and fruit gardens, shrub gardens, and tree gardens, ponds, and many different flower gardens, waterfalls, ponds, and bubblers, lakes, marshy swamps, and more.

But we also managed to catch geese (which I didn’t download, will have to do it tonight), chipmunks, squirrels, a DRAGONFLY! (I’ve been trying to capture one my whole trip), a wild turkey! (that was a surprise), a squirrel, a monarch butterfly on an orange coneflower, and koi.

We walked 5 miles at the zoo the day before yesterday, and 4 miles up and down hills in the heat and humidity yesterday at the arboretum. So we’ve been getting a good workout every day.

I autographed books at 3 Barnes and Nobles.

From Cougars to Butterflies

My camera came back from the shop nice and clean!! I had a “scratch” it looked like on the sensor, but it was just lint or something. Anyway, it’s all set and the lenses are calibrated.

So I’m back to picture taking, around writing.

Do you see the Monarch Butterfly’s Before and After shot? I have some other cool shots, but it’s time to get back to writing. The problem with writing stories is that they won’t get written without me! 🙂 <3
