In Fantasy or Fiction…

We create worlds.

In the one picture I took in Scotland, I was on the bus in Edinburgh, and we saw a beautiful rainbow. But the setting wasn’t beautiful, cluttered with buildings and stuff. So I created a fictional world–from a photo I’d taken from a castle on the Isle of Skye. The scenes were both fantastical, as if being dropped into a fairy world, yet both are real. I’m sure the passengers thought my friend and I were nuts as we took as many pictures of the rainbow as we could capture while the bus kept moving along.

In the one I took of the cardinal, he was looking into the water as if peering at his reflection. But, what if–and that’s the start of a story. What if he sees himself as a hawk. Or he wishes he were a bird of prey. Or what if he realizes the hawk is above, his reflection in the water? That’s what makes creating stories from reality into fiction, or fantasy, fun. The cardinal was really at a birding stand at the cabins where we did our writer’s retreat, staring into the water. I edited the book I had to edit while there, but I also took advantage of photographing as much as could. 🙂 <3

The cooper hawk was sitting on my fence. I included an awful picture of a blurred version of the cooper hawk when he was on a different fence section and was getting ready to take off. I wouldn’t have shown it on here, but I posted it on FB to show the wing span, and one of my readers said it was a shifting hawk! There you have it! My shapeshifters shift so fast, they are a blur of forms. I love my readers. 🙂 She turned my poor photo into fantasy, and now, you know what that means? Anyone who sees a creature shifting is in trouble.

I really, really need to run errands today. I hate running them because it messes up my writing routine, then I’m struggling to get it done. If I don’t go early, though, I’ve begun to write, and then…yep, no errands. My car registration came in and I have to get a safety inspection before I can register it, so….no putting it off. That’s the mundane of life. I’d rather be photographing, creating bears, creating composites, gardening, and writing. Oh, and I did get about 60 gals of branches cut and weeds pulled yesterday. Then I moved a rock, it was starting to get too dark to work, and found a snake. Yes, it was a garden snake, but that decided it. No more gardening for the night!

Have a super, lovely day!!

A Mix of Reality and Fantasy…

Yesterday, I shared a picture of Eilean Donan in a fantasy world. I added cliffs reflecting in the water on the Isle of Skye (just love how glassy the water can be and the beautiful reflections that can be captured in Scotland!)…so that it looks like the fairy mushrooms are now a long distance from the castle, and the castle is no longer floating in the sky. I love both, but this just gives a different story.

Here is a picture of a snow leopard I captured in a shot at the Omaha Zoo. In Loving the White Bear, a polar bear shifter story set in Alaska, three brother snow leopards also live, and this is Simon. He and his brothers are on vacation in a nice fantasy spot. It appears he is grooming himself after he went fishing. Do you think the koi will catch the dragonfly? Nope! He makes a narrow escape. And that’s my story!

I wrote nearly 4,000 words yesterday, rained most of the day, but I also got out in between rain showers and dug up more grass. Yes! Then I remembered my daughter’s corgis are staying with me for a week. Ack! If they run through the plant border, which they’re bound to do, and we keep having rain…what a mess! So I’ll have to cover it with planter boxes until I can get some bark mulch. Even then, I think they’ll end up getting muddy. So I’ll just block it. We’re supposed to have rain again today and tomorrow. Haven’t checked the weather yet, but I hope to run errands…if I don’t melt…

Have a wonderfully, fantastic day!!!

Orange and Teal in Photoshop

Isle of Skye at Sunset

The original, and converting colors to change it to orange and teal.

I love aqua waters. The real kind. They’re beautiful. And I kept seeing articles about how orange and teal colors appeal in movies so much and then on book covers, I thought I’d experiment. It’s easy to do if you have Photoshop, and I’m sure with other programs too. There are lots of great tutorials on it.

This one is great.

And there you have it. An orange and teal world at your fingertips.

Have a great orange and teal day. 🙂

From Ugly to Artistic–Don’t You Think?

calf having supper (640x426)calf having supper Isle of Skye near Neist Point Lighthouse 800x400 flattened textI took this photo on the Isle of Skye, overlooking the Neist Point Lighthouse and it was growing dark. We wanted to capture the sunset when I saw a plain old cow, as opposed to a beautiful Highland cow, nursing her calf. And no longer was it just a plain old cow.

I knew the picture wouldn’t turn out great because of the lighting, but I took it anyway, just in case I could fix it later. With Photoshop magic–brightening, sharpening the foreground a bit, then using one of the skies from the Pretty Photoshop Actions:

Vivid Skies Cloud Overlays + BONUS Cloud Applicator Actions

and the super easy Cloud Applicator Actions that turn a blown-out or washed-out sky into spectacular,  I was able to reveal the beauty. It’s like a painting, don’t you think? Ha! My parents were true artists, and never thought I could create works of art…

If only they could see me now. lol

🙂

Another shot that needed reworking was this one.

2 birds on shrub 900x6002 birds on shrub hazy sky Scotland Isle of Skye, text 900x600The photo was too dark, gloomy day, but with Photoshop, I was able to brighten it up, and then like with the other photo, I used Pretty Vivid Skies Cloud Overlay. I had tried other cloud overlays with this photo, but could never blend them in to make them work. I kept tossing out the revisions. But when I bought this new program, I wanted to see if that would make it work. It did! Like a charm!

I didn’t mess with the colors, they were all just hidden in the hills in the darkness of the photo. I sharpened the birds, and the seedpods. And that was it. This was on a walk to one of the beautiful castle ruins on the Isle of Skye. Sometimes something other than just a castle, can capture the imagination.

Using that same Cloud Applicator program, I was able to also add clouds here, and cloud reflection in the water. 🙂 I loved the reflections of the hills and trees in the glassy loch, but I think adding the clouds added more drama.

San Diego boys looking at water, one on phone 900x600 text

San Diego boys looking at water, one on phone with clouds text 900x600

I love this–it’s like a commentary on life as we know it now. Two boys are fascinated with the marine life. And the third boy is on his cell phone. In the past, I would have cropped a lot of the sky out, but with the Cloud Applicator program, it was so simple to use. I left a lot of the natural haze in and blended it with a new sky. Within in minutes, it had changed from so-so, to eye catching!

I’m off to write! 30,000 words to go! And then I need to figure out my next 3 books to pitch to my publisher for next year. What would you like to see more of? Or something new?

And if you have photos with boring skies, be sure and check out the video on Vivid Skies Overlays. Watching that sold me! Then when I began to transform my own pictures so quickly and easily and make a real impact on the way they looked, that was the real testimony for me!

boats, castle ruins reflections in loch (640x427)

This is an unretouched photo that I took of the clouds and boat reflections in a glassy loch, but note the castle ruins in the left-hand corner? When I have a chance, I want to do something with the boring skies in the background to hopefully bring more attention to the castle too! 🙂 But I’ll leave the reflected clouds just the way they are.

Have a super wonderful day!

A Mother Grouse, Her Scare Tactics and Her Baby

Grouse and Baby

Grouse and Baby

I wish the shots had been better, but we could only capture the grouse through the windshield and by then, it was rain and dust smeared and so the pictures didn’t turn out as well as I would have liked.

And then she rejoined her baby on the other side of the road and we were on our way.

And then she rejoined her baby on the other side of the road and we were on our way.

We also saw a hedgehog, adorable, on the Isle of Skye at night, but I couldn’t get a shot of it since it was too close to the car. And a big white winged owl flew in front of the car at night also and startled me, but it made me think of Labyrinth, Harry Potter, and everything magical.
