A Mushroom Comes Out

Sometimes boring starts turn out interesting. I kept seeing the mushroom pole come out and thought it was a boring little mushroom and didn’t take a picture, and then it would expand into the really large one and I realized that little pole was just the beginning.

Baby’s here. Got to run! Still re-reading Cougar Magic and hope to have some word count too. It is pouring out!

Have a great day!!!

Cool Mushrooms on a Rainy Day

Beautiful rain brings beautiful mushrooms

Do you ever get stuck on what to do about something? Anything?

I had a fan who is writing a book and she asked me how to overcome writer’s block. But some of these steps can work for anything–don’t know how to solve a problem?

  1. Research–when I’m trying to figure out if something will work, I’ll do research, or if I want to know if something has ever been done, research. That’s how I fixed my garbage disposal issue too. Even with artwork, I’m trying to figure out if the man and the horse are in proper proportions so I need to find a picture to remind myself just how big horses are compared to a man.
  2. Do something relaxing. Take a break. Watch TV. Read a book. Take a walk. I wrote 5,000 words yesterday, but I got stuck. So I took a break and watched a murder mystery teen drama and worked on bears. In the back of my mind, I was thinking of the issues I need to resolve in the current book. When I went to sew up more bear parts on the sewing machine, I had it! Sometimes moving away from the computer screen can help. Sometimes when I go to bed at night, I have no other distractions, and I begin thinking of the story. If I don’t write them down, I’ll forget them, so I need to grab my pen and paper and write. I had another scene come to me, but at that point, I just thought about it, and guess what? This morning it’s gone. Have no idea. So I have to write them down. The same with sewing. I had the ideas in mind, but I had to keep thinking about them until I could write them down. I didn’t want to stop what I was doing on my sewing. I did end up writing another 1,000 words.
  3. Work on a different project! Another story! Another repair project! Something else, just so you can feel you’ve accomplished something, anything. I do this when I get really stuck, like with putting something together. I read the directions and I can’t figure it out. I try again, take a break, try again. Okay, time to do something else. Then go back to it later. Sometimes doing research can help. Finding a Youtube video will help. Sometimes leaving it until the next day works, just getting a good night’s rest, and voila, it comes to you. I do that when I’m working on edits and they seem insurmountable. I look at it the next day with a fresh start.
  4. Sometimes I’ll get a notion from watching movies or reading books that will finally sink in for me and all of a sudden, I know what I’m missing in the book. No, not specific details that are in another book or a TV series, or whatever, but it’s like when I was watching The Walking Dead, and I noticed when the story was over-dramatized with the characters and all their issues, you forgot what the premise of the story was–staying alive and killing zombies. In my shifter stories, I have to show them in their shifted form.  It’s integral to the story, just like zombies are in a zombie movie. When I was looking at my earlier historical fantasy stories that I was revising, I have heroines who are weak. And the heroes are bullies. My life changed, my writing changed. The hero and heroines both have their own courageous strengths and weaknesses. I couldn’t see that when I was working on the original stories. I couldn’t even see that years later. I love the story lines, but I need to revise them to show the kind of characters I write now and who are much loved. Sometimes it takes time to learn what is not working. I finally just realized what was wrong with them. If you see a situation you don’t like–change it. The same with artwork. Sometimes I love what I’m doing, and other times, I don’t. So I have to just keep working on it until I love it.
  5. Give up. Yes, you heard me. They said never to give up. But sometimes you just need to for your own sanity. Find another solution. Hire a plumber! Start over and write something different. I was trying to write to a market and I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t. I didn’t love the story line, the characters, nothing about it. So sometimes we need to just give it up and go on another venture.
  6. Brainstorm. I do this with others and with myself. Sometimes when I’m brainstorming with someone, it will finally come to me. It’s there, hidden in my subconscious. Sometimes, they’ll have an idea that will work.
  7. Step out of your comfort zone. I see this with artists who say they tried something different and they’d stepped out of their comfort zone. Maybe that’s really their calling. I wrote historical fantasy to begin with, then historical romance fiction, and then psychics, teen books, vampires, and finally werewolves. The werewolves were really different for me, but that was it. The genre that gave me recognition. So sometimes trying something different will do it.
  8. Do you have to always do something in a specific order? Sometimes I need to write my scenes out of order. I don’t want to because it can be difficult filling in the blanks and making it work, but sometimes that’s the way for me to have a breakthrough. I’ll think of a future scene, keep ignoring it and then I finally realize it’s not going away and it will take days, weeks to reach that point in the story, so I need to just write it and get it over with and then I can get back to my more orderly writing.
  9. Re-read your book, look over your artwork, re-read the complicated directions. Sometimes when I re-read the book, I find all kinds of loose ends and then guess what? I have new scenes to write. I had written where the heroine had borrowed clothes–that’s the problem with shifting and not having your own clothes with you–so then I had more to write–she had to dress in her own clothes and wash the loaner clothes. She had been wearing loaner bunny slippers also. The hero had to carry her into the house through the snowdrifts. I could have made her stronger by having her run through the snow, but the slippers are borrowed, it’s a romance, and he’s the hero. But it was something I had to mention.
  10. Just write. Even if you don’t think it’s going to work, even if it has to be heavily revised, I often find if I just keep writing, most of what I write works. Also, whatever we write we can change. If you don’t try, it’s not going to happen. Just like getting anything done. If you think about it, stress over it, feel you can’t do it before you even get started, well, you’re sabotaging your efforts. Positive thinking. I can do it. It might not be the best ever, but I will do my best. Attitude can make a difference. When I was writing stories for publication eons ago, I wanted to be published. But then that changed. I HAD to be published. I HAVE to put the furniture together, or repair something. I can put off work, fill up my day with other stuff, or I can do what I have to do and just…do it.

So what are you waiting for?

Have fun! I’m off to write and edit and enjoy the rain!!!

Mushrooms are a Must

In a fairy garden…

I’m at 103,000 words! See, I told you 80K was just the minimum. Baby should be here any second, and I’m almost done with the story. All the scenes are written, but last night I was thinking about it and remembered, oh, wait, what did they have in their Christmas stockings? What about his brother getting notified they’re marrying? Who scratched the villain’s face? There was supposed to be a celebration, what happened to it???

LOL….so I wrote up some more notes, and all of these things are short answer, so I can add them quickly. But they’re just some loose ends that need to be cleared up.

And then I need to re-read the whole book over again.

Okay, baby’s here and it’s time to get even busier!  Have a great day!!!

Hurricane Irma

All I can say is what a mess the next hurricane could create, and praying everyone in the path stays safe.

In the meantime, I need to restock on food and I hope that the grocery stores are back to normal. The gas stations have had a lot of covers over the pump. No gas.

The USS Kearsarge and USS Oak Hill, which were headed to provide relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, are staying off the east coast of southern Florida for the next few days — out of the path of Irma — awaiting a decision as to whether they will they proceed to Texas or be ready to help with Irma, according to a military official.Ryder also told CNN that Air Force search and rescue teams that were assisting in Texas have “returned to their home stations to recover and prepare for a potential response to Hurricane Irma.” http://www.cnn.com/…/key-west-navy-evacuation-hu…/index.html

Prayers go out to all that face the wrath of Hurricane Irma.

The US military has ordered the evacuation of over five thousand personnel from a Naval Air Station in Florida in preparation for Hurricane Irma.

Fairy Mushrooms–Night and Day

Actually, the first one was taken in the early morning hours when it was really dark out, and the second, midday when it was pouring out.  See what a difference it makes when the lighting is different? From autumn moodiness to spring brightness.

That was supposed to be curly parsley that the fairies were tending to, but it looks like they started a mushroom garden instead. You know how the fae are.

I just got the final proofing for Heart of the Wolf for re-release in January. I didn’t know that I could make any changes to the actual book–I’d been working on the final changes to the novella I added–but they’re giving me the opportunity to make changes to the decade-old book. That’s like a redo button. Yay! What did I say ten years ago???? I have no idea.

Okay, behind on Billionaire still, and planned to catch up, but then….the proofing came and I always have like 2 weeks, and that’s it.

Off to work. Think we have more rain and it’s been flooding in some areas, so this is a great time to stay home and write/edit!

Have a lovely day!!

Magical Mushrooms

I highlighted these with a flashlight early one foggy morning. And then the other I did later in the morning, still with a flashlight. I love mushrooms. They come in all shapes and sizes. Do you see the baby one near the base of the other?

My electricity went off in the middle of posting this. Photoshop crashed, so I’ll have to find the other baby mushrooms later.

I finished Flight of the White Wolf! Got word count, just now editing the last chapters!

Then it’s time for taxes, promo blogs, reading an author’s book for a quote, proofing Galaxy Warrior for print, proofing more audiobook chapters for Taming the Wild Cougar and then I can celebrate! And get started on the next Silver wolf book!

‘Til then, I’m off to edit!

Have a fun-filled, magical mushroom day!

Mushrooms in the Dark

mushrooms with a flashlight 900 005.png

I saw these mushrooms the day before and wanted to get a picture of them because they were so interesting. But I got busy, and I didn’t take them. Then when I took the puppies out in the rain in the dark the next morning, the mushrooms were still standing. I thought how neat they would be to take a picture of them in the dark. So with a camp lantern that doesn’t put off much light, and a flashlight, I proceeded to set out an outside doormat on the wet grass, get low, and take some pictures. I think I needed to pull the flashlight back a bit, but that was it on the mushrooms. They have now all collapsed. We had hard rains all night last night and it wreaked the damage. I looked for any new ones, but didn’t see any.

I love mushrooms to eat. But for these, I’m happy to just photograph!

Time to Vote

walk-to-vote-curved-path-900-001I had decided to walk to the polling station first thing this morning. I walked to my mailbox and realized I had forgotten my phone. I don’t always think of it. It isn’t an appendage to me like it is for some. But if I go walking, I want it in case I need it for an emergency. The first time I walked through these sprawling neighborhoods, I was brand new and got lost right away. lol

So having a GPS really helped. So I returned and grabbed the phone and headed out. Totally confused the puppies.

walk-to-vote-pine-needles-dripping-water-900-003A light mist cloaked the whole area. I’d brought my raincoat and several had umbrellas just in case.

walk-to-vote-wet-berries-900-010We waited for maybe an hour to vote, but I was lucky. The line for A-L was much longer than for M-Z. And you have to know that was nice for a change–being a W before I was married, and an S after that, I’ve always been at the back of the line, last to be called. When I’m at the back of the group on book signings, I often wonder if I should have created a pen name. A. Just A. Then I’d be in front for once in my life. 🙂 Every once in a while, we’d line up in reverse order, but that happened so infrequently, that I can only recall maybe two times that it happened in my life.

And then it was done and I was off to walk back home, taking pictures along the way, capturing the winding, mysterious path, right when an older gentleman stopped to talk to me. He was from South Africa, not voting, but visiting his sister. I always say hi to joggers and dog walkers in the morning. Because of the hour, I was nearly run over by kids riding bicycles or not sure what they’re called boards on speed.

And then I tried capturing the misty water droplets on pine needles and berries.

walk-to-vote-mushrooms-900-008And fairy mushrooms in the wet grass.

I had to ship off a bear and a book after that, so now I’m home, FINALLY posting my blog.

And now I have to write.

Have a wonderful day!!

My Book is Growing by Leaps and Bounds!

I’m now 15,000 over my minimum. I can’t stop writing! And writing. And writing. But that’s a great thing, isn’t it?

It’s nearly to the end. I mentioned that 15,000 words ago. So apparently, it wasn’t. 🙂

I’ve been hitting this hard for days, the scenes just coming, the characters talking to each other no matter what I’m doing–taking the puppies out for a potty break, fixing meals, wait! Hold on! Keep that thought…or scene, the dialogue! Wait until I’m back at my keyboard!

I wanted to start Cougar Trouble after this, but I’m going to have to jump on the next wolf book. Have to keep moving, don’t look back, only look forward.

variegated iris and skyrocket holly flowers 006 (640x427)But I do stop to take a picture or two or three while I’m at it. These are tall narrow boxwood and they have flowers! I think they say they are inconspicuous, but it looked like millions of new leaves were sprouting, so I took a closer look, and they’re tiny flowers.

variegated iris and skyrocket holly flowers 007 (640x427)variegated iris and skyrocket holly flowers 005 (640x427) (2)No matter how busy you are, do you ever stop to see how life is getting on without you?

variegated iris and skyrocket holly flowers 001 (640x427)And I picked up a butterfly Iris variegated plant. Odd angle, but I was trying to show my friend that it doesn’t have an exposed rhizome like the bearded irises do. What I liked about it is that it’s unusual and eye catching even when not bearing flowers. 🙂

Okay, that’s enough chitchat! Hope you have a super great day!

You know what I’m back to! The NEVER Ending Story. 🙂 Golden Fae.
