Cardinal Daddy and Baby

I love observing animal behavior. The baby has been eating on his own with his sister all this time. But here comes daddy cardinal and baby is opening his beak, flapping his wings, as if he were in the nest still, needing nourishment.

Daddy obliges, but then he was back to foraging for himself.

Silver Town Wolf: Home for the Holidays. It might sound like it’s a Hallmark Classic, but it’s my regular paranormal romantic suspense–dead bodies, ghosts, wolf shifters, romance, you know, the usual.

I’m off to write! Trying to get 3,000 words today. Managed 1,000 yesterday on baby day, but also got 60 books ready to ship, another 30 to go.

Have a beautiful day!!!

Baby Cardinals

Still doggy sitting. Kids didn’t get in until really late last night. Even with running dogs in an out all day yesterday, I managed to get 4,000 words. Still 26,000 word behind from my original goal. (Due to stopping to write a novella, edit a book, and proof another–I have to remind myself.)

But yesterday, I kept noticing that every time I went out with the dogs, one or two at a time, a female cardinal was having fits. Normally, they fly off, but this time, she just kept chirping at all of us. So late last night while I was working on my computer, I saw two of them in the rosebush. I was thinking they were the momma and baby, but they’re two babies, their beaks not orange yet. The feeder is above them, but empty. The squirrels knocked all the food out of them on the ground, and they’ve claimed the feeders and the food on the ground for their own. lol

Tenacious little baby birds. Normally, the adult cardinals just fly off when the other birds come to eat–the blue jays, woodpeckers, mockingbirds, and doves. But these baby females are hungry and momma and daddy told them this food was for them.

Okay, hoping the kids don’t sleep in too late and come and pick up their furbabies soon. I’m trying for 3,000 a day to try and catch up. My goal is normally 2,000 a day. But now I have to write two more novellas, so I need to get cracking.

Have a beautiful day! We had a great storm yesterday, supposed to rain today, but it looks clear now. Hope to get some more baby bird pictures when it’s a little lighter out!

Remember, even if you’re trying to get stuff done, notice the wonders of life around you. It’s amazing what goes on outside of us.

Flying Backwards

I feel like I’m flying backwards as I take a meaningful step back and revise Claiming the White Bear yet again, and again, and again. What is the issue this time? Too much narration in the first chapter. So I moved the narration to another chapter and turned it into dialogue. She doesn’t tell the hero about something he should know earlier on either. So I move that to earlier in the story and argh, the two changes will make for a lot of ripples in the beginning of the story. But it doesn’t matter. It’s all good. It makes the story so much better. So I printed out the first 4 chapters last night again and was editing them until 1:30 am and finally gave up before I read chapter 4. I’m sure after I make the changes, I will have to reread and revise again. But, at least it’s a start. And the good thing is that I think it was by chapter 5 that she had told him the news, so it won’t affect the rest of the book once I make the revisions to these chapters.

So tomorrow is Christmas Eve and I’m having more of a traditional Irish dish–corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, and carrots at my daughter’s request. I ended up buying a bigger crock pot because mine is only 2.5 quarts and when I go to make corned beef or brisket or pot roast, it’s just not big enough. This one is another of the original Crock Pot, not the fancy stuff with all the electronic gizmos. I like the ceramic “bowl” that the food is cooked in. It seems indestructible, plus reviews on the fancier stuff had good and bad reviews. I was glad they still sell the original. The only thing I hated was with the original, I had the best cookbook I used for recipes and in my move, I lost the book. This one has a few measly pages included with the directions, about the size of your hand. Blah. And yes, you can look up the stuff I’m sure on the internet, but I like to have my book sitting there to use when cooking.

I’m off to write! I only got about 500 words written yesterday, the rest was all moving content, and editing. *sigh* But! I’m excited about the changes and I’m off to make more.

Oh, and about the blurry birds in flight, I’m getting better about capturing some things in flight that aren’t blurry. My granddaughter for one, who is on the move constantly. And the butterfly that looks like it was still? It wasn’t. It’s a yellow swallowtail and they move constantly. But the blurry ones are kind of fun too because they show the birds’ movement. Did you know you can blur things to create movement? lol So that’s what I did. On purpose. Did I mention I tell tales???

Hope you all have a super day!!

Birds Not of a Feather

All kinds of different birds, all beautiful in their own feathers.

I’m off to do all kinds of things early this morning and then have to pick up sick baby from daycare. Today was supposed to be my baby day off, but I know she sleeps better here, if she can sleep. It means no writing though. I did manage 2,000 words yesterday and finished a bear I need to ship this morning.

Have a lovely day!!! I’ve got to run!

A Study in Woodpeckers

Redheaded woodpecker, Red-bellied woodpecker, Downy, and Hairy

When I first moved here, I saw the redheaded woodpecker, but I think there are too many birds and the dogs, and me to make it worth his while to visit the yard. I saw a downy in my tree out front when I went to walk to the mailbox around the block, but no camera. He just stayed there too, so he would have made for the perfect shot. He was low in the tree. Most of the time, I’m really far away, and the light in the sky makes it hard to focus on the bird.

I caught this downy in a forest in Minnesota. The hairy woodpeckers were doing a mating dance in the tree behind my property. And I caught the red-bellied woodpecker in flight. He’s the only type that eats at my feeders, unafraid, for the most part, of me taking pictures out of my window in full view of him.

The hairy is still working on the dead branch of the pine tree out front, so I caught him yesterday working on it. I used to be able to stand there and take pictures, but this one was skittish.

If you hear that rat-a-tat-tat in in the woods some day, it just might be a woodpecker. Yes, they’re destructive, and can cause damage to homes. I still love seeing them. I heard an owl in that same tree the other night, but I wouldn’t have been able to capture a picture of him. It was tempting to look for him though. I was curious what kind it is.

Back to the book. 27,000 done, 53K to go!

Have a super day!!!

White-winged Doves and Cardinals

Edits are done for Billionaire Wolf Christmas!  And just turned them in. Playing with photos this morning!

The male cardinal was feeding the female. They often have nests this time of year!

Tried to capture a photo of the woodpecker, but by the time I removed the lens cap, he took off. He’s warier. I think it’s a younger bird.

No more goofing off with pictures! Back to the current book. The days are running out before I have to turn it in! I get so wrapped up in the older story, for edits, that I have to get my mind back on the new book. Which I’m eager to do and wrap this puppy up.

Have a beautiful day!!! 🙂 <3

Birds in the Garden

Cowbird to dove: I was here first, do your worst.

Male house finch with sunflower seed and ready to go.

I saw a Baltimore Oriole the other day. I love them, but he was in one of my neighbor’s trees and wouldn’t come to me. 🙁

The one was at the writer’s retreat, the other on my bird feeder. 🙂

Only 5,000 words to write, for word count. But I still have a long way to go to finish the story, then edit it. Still, from 0 to 75,000, not bad. 🙂

Have a great day!

Do You Ever Get Excited…

about the little things in life?

I had to move away from the windows yesterday so I could get some writing done, because I was having way too much fun photographing a new bird to the garden. Blue jays, doves, and cardinals were having no success at chasing him off.

He’s a rose-breasted grosbeak and he’s guarding the seed tray again this morning. From what I read, he’s migrating north to the breeding grounds. So for now, he’s filling up before he’s on his way.  He doesn’t even mind me photographing him.

This morning, two courting blue jays, the red-bellied woodpecker, two courting bluebirds, and mated cardinals were all in the yard, but the grosbeak has managed to keep his place at the table, only leaving briefly, though singing away to us that this is his claimed territory when I took the puppies out to potty.

So eat well, little grosbeak, before you continue your long journey, and I’ll enjoy watching you until then.

Take pleasures in the small things in life and they will snowball into something big. 🙂

I Got Caught

woodpecker-900-019woodpecker-looking-at-me-900-031I have to capture the photos of the birds from inside, though I will try this spring to sit outside and take pictures of them, if they’ll get used to me. Some do.

Even the smaller woodpeckers will. Not this one. He’s super cautious.

Running late on doing anything. Some days just seem to be that way. Don’t they?

Have a wonderfully productive and fun day.
