Taming the Wild Cougar…how did I get the idea?

Years and years and years ago, I read a romance where a cop had taken a nurse hostage because he had seen her give first aid training to a bunch of Boy Scouts, and he was wounded and on the run. The “good” guys are out to take him down, and he’s got to solicit her help to prove his innocence.

So I wanted to have a hero who is undercover, wounded by another cougar, and seeking medical supplies in a clinic that is closed for the night. Except the doctor is napping in her office before she takes off on her camping trip. He didn’t mean to take her hostage. But he doesn’t have much choice. She tries to get away, to warn the sheriff–but inevitably–they are thrown into a situation they’re stuck with until they can find a way out. The story is completely different from the one I read so many years ago.

But that kernel of an idea stuck with me over all those years, and Taming the Wild Cougar was born. Every story is different. Sometimes I read a news report, or watch a movie, or think–what if? And a story is born.

It’s not easy. I may make it look easy. But it isn’t. I’m winding down on Bounty Hunter Gets Her Wolf. How to end it? I don’t know. How to make it more conflictive? I don’t know. Sexier? I don’t know. More wolfish as in more wolf scenes? I don’t know. lol

But I’ll get there. I just need to finish the book, then go back in and make it have more of all the elements that will ensure it is so much better. To make it fun. Believable. A book readers don’t want to put down, and then want the next one.

Taming the Wild Cougar

Cougar shifter, Dr. Kate Parker, is planning her annual camping vacation alone this year. She runs into trouble before she even starts her trip in the form of one wounded, hot cougar undercover cop—or so he says. He’s not going along with just her tender loving care because he came into town as a cougar, and he needs her help to get him back to where he can take up the search to look for an arms dealer, who just happens to be a cougar too.
Leyton Hill slipped into the unlocked, darkened clinic, figuring his luck had just changed. Except he doesn’t plan for the good doctor to be napping in her office. Taking him on her vacation wasn’t in the plan, and taking her hostage, hadn’t been either, but now she’s stuck with him until he can get back to his mission and the chase at hand. It appears the roles have reversed and who’s holding whom hostage now?

Excerpt for Taming the Wild Cougar:

But then Dr. Kate Parker saw what he was looking for. A photo on her desk of her and her cat, Sheba, in her arms. Another with Sheba catching her favorite pink ball mid-air.

She knew in an instant, that’s why he wanted to come to her office. To see if she had a family portrait. He was good. If he was an undercover cop, he had to be good at his job.

“I’ll show you a picture of my husband. Let me have the phone.”

He obliged, but stayed right next to her as she pulled up her photo gallery, his hot piney-woods scent drifting to her. Trying to ignore his close proximity, which was damn hard to do as he breathed down her neck, she quickly searched through the pictures until she came to one and clicked on it. She hoped he’d believe that the deputy sheriff who owned the cabins on Lake Buchanan, Chase Buchanan, was her husband.

“Here’s Chase. My husband.” Best of all, she’d given him a big hug for having taken her to the firing range and teaching her how to fire her 9 mm and his wife had shot the picture of them.

As long as he didn’t see the pictures of Chase and his wife, Shannon, and their adorable babies, Kate thought it looked convincing.

“Nice,” the man said, studying the photo way too long. “May I?” He waited for her to hand the phone to him, but she tried to turn it off. He took it from her and flipped through the pictures. “And this is his sister and her babies?”

“Uh-yeah.”

He flipped through several more photos. “No pictures of her husband. He must be a really close brother.”

“He is.”

He glanced at the walls in her office. Her medical credentials. More pictures of Sheba. Her Black Belt First Degree certificate in ju jitsu. Great.

Then he focused on her desk, and specifically her large desk pad calendar and studied it. “Vacation from now until Monday, returning two weeks. Rockies.” He shifted his gaze to her. “You and who else?”

“My husband, Chase, of course.”

“What happened to your three kids?”

She twisted her mouth in annoyance.

He cast her a small smile. “Why don’t we go to your house?”

“Sure. You can explain to my husband why you’re running around naked, wounded, and forcing me to take you places.”

“I could. Let’s go.”

Quickly, she tried to toss her lab coat onto her chair, just in case anyone might notice the blood and she always hung up her lab coat. But Mr. Undercover Cop looked at it and smiled at her, not in an amused way. More sardonically, like he knew just what she was up to. “Why don’t we take it with you so you can wash it out? Blood can leave permanent stains.”

He caught her glancing at her desk drawer. “Got something in there you need to take with you on your trip?” He still had her phone in his hand, but dropped the trash bag and bunched gown on top of her desk to free his other hand. He reached past her, brushing against her, and pulled the drawer open.

When he grabbed for the gun in her drawer, she saw her chance at escape and made a dash for the door.

So you see, you never know what’s going to happen in the cougar-run town of Yuma Town. Never.

I get ideas for things all the time for just everything. Do you ever see something and think what a neat idea that is, and want to do something in your yard, or house, or writing, or photograph something similar?

But no matter what you do, it will be yours. Your voice, your way. And who knows but you might inspire others.

Oh, and Taming the Wild Cougar’s audiobook should be out soon. Just need the narrator to fix four issues and then it goes in for final proofing!

Have a great inspirational day!

Cougar’s Mate: Instinct told her to run…

Shannon Rafferty learns that hanging out with the bad boys could be a dangerous business, but hooking up with a cop is even worse. Now she’s on the run, trying to avoid being murdered by his cougar shifter brothers and uncle. If that isn’t bad enough, a deputy sheriff hunts her down while she’s running as a cougar and trying to survive in the Colorado wilderness. He vows to protect her no matter what she’s done. With three dead boyfriends to her name, she’s sure she will be the death of Chase Buchanan before either of them can prevent it. No matter how much she knows she has to run again, he soon holds her heart hostage. But will that be enough to keep them both alive?

Chase Buchanan—as wilderness cabin resort owner, former US Army Special Forces, and part time deputy of the small town of Yuma, Colorado that boasts a love of cougars—is tasked to track down a cougar reported to be hunting human prey. Chase soon learns she’s a shifter, not a full-time cougar, and she’s on the run. When he takes her in, he vows to protect her. After losing his wife and baby to the human kind of predator years earlier, he’s not letting Shannon’s hunters kill her, too. But how is he going to hold onto the wild-cat woman, who is unpredictable at every turn, without losing his heart to her, and then losing her as well?

The sky grew darker as Shannon stared out the entrance of the cave, watching for any sign of danger. She hadn’t seen any hikers or hunters. Yes, she’d noticed the tents at the campsite near the lake. She’d even considered that after the men retired to their tents and their sleeping bags tonight, she could go there and catch a fish in the lake. The campers wouldn’t be able to see her at night. Then she’d have it made. But once she’d rescued the boy, she nixed that idea. If they somehow did catch sight of her, they would know she was a dangerous predator, looking for a new source of meat. Maybe even them.

It didn’t matter. She couldn’t have let the boy drown. Several times she’d woken during the day, thinking she’d heard a child screaming. Forget his having nightmares about last night. She was having them!

The moonlight softly illuminated the golden aspen, the leaves fluttering in the chilly breeze. She closed her eyes briefly.

She had enough nightmares to deal with without piling up any more on top of those. She had intended to stay here in the area because she hadn’t located any sign of wolves or black bears. If she ran into a black bear or wolf pack? Both predators would push a cougar out of their territory or kill him.

She hadn’t smelled either in the vicinity. Only cougars. And a lot of them. Cougars didn’t run in packs. Which was why a cougar would be at risk when encountering a wolf pack. A lone wolf was no match for a cougar’s claws and teeth. But with a lot of cougars congregating together? It had to mean they were shifters. And they kept the other big predators away. So she thought she had half a chance at surviving here. Bears and wolves would find some other place to hunt.

She’d never smelled so many cougars in one area before though and it did worry her that they’d locate her and then what? Interrogate her. Why would a female shifter run in the wilderness by herself with no camping equipment anywhere?

Even if they didn’t learn who she was, she couldn’t go to any of them and ask for help. Not in her cougar form. Without clothes, she couldn’t just walk into town naked, either. Besides, she was a wanted woman, and she was certain no one would believe her word over the rest of her boyfriend’s family. Not when Hennessey Kelly was a cop, which meant she was on her own.

The crimson sky turned to blackness and all that was left was the moon and a sprinkling of stars. Shannon rose, listened, her ears perked, trying to hear anything other than the sound of the breeze rustling the leaves down below. She heard no sign of humans and leapt down to the next ledge. Thankfully, her kind could leap eighteen feet in one bound, up or down. And horizontally? As much as forty to forty-five feet. At a sprint, she could run full out for short distances at forty to fifty miles per hour, which was what she had planned—to race back to the lake, despite discounting the idea earlier, and then take however long it took to catch her meal.

She’d made it to the second rock ledge when she saw something move in her peripheral vision. A man standing on a lower ledge off to her right, his hands reaching for his rifle, slung over his shoulder. How could he see her at dusk?

He moved quickly as if he was a military man and not just a hunter. Before she could leap at him, he fired a shot, the sound ringing in her ears, echoing across the rocks. The last thought she had as she collapsed on the rock ledge above him was that she had lived a month longer than she thought she would have ever managed.

As soon as the she-cat landed on the stone, asleep, hopefully, Chase struggled to reach the ledge she was lying on. If he’d been in his cougar form, no problem. But to reach her as a human, he could have used climbing gear.

He hated having to shoot her as much as it felt as if he were shooting one of his own people. But he wasn’t. He had just knocked out a wild cat protecting herself that might have killed him, based on survival instinct alone.

He grasped the top of the ledge, got a couple of toe holds with his boots, and pulled himself halfway up the rock face when he saw a naked woman lying on the granite, her back to him, and his tranquilizer dart in her shoulder. Shocking him to the core, he gaped at her. Holy shit.

Silky, dark brown, nearly black hair draped around her neck, the rest of her tan skin covered in chill bumps from the cold. Before he could climb on top of the ledge to reach her, and while he was still processing that the cougar was a shifter, and not a full she-cat, his cell phone rang.

His nerves, normally made of steel, shattered into a million fragments. He climbed up onto the ledge and hurried to pull the dart out of the woman’s shoulder, then jerked off his parka. After rushing to lay it on the ledge and then lifting her onto it, he pulled her arms into the sleeves and then buttoned it up to her throat. The parka only came to high thigh, but he couldn’t do anything about that for now. He glanced up at the cave above them, assuming she must have been staying there.

His breath coming out in a misty fog and his heart pounding hard, he made the rest of the arduous climb to reach the cave to grab her clothes and ID. He stalked inside, using his cell phone to provide some extra light as pitch black as it was in there, and found—nothing. Not a backpack, not a stitch of clothes. Certainly no ID. And she wasn’t anyone he remembered ever having seen before.

He hadn’t thought he could be shocked any further.

“God, what a nightmare.” He had to get the nearly naked, sleeping woman down the cliffs somehow. And he had to keep her warm until then.

He called Dan to give him an update. “Dan.”

“Yeah, I tried calling you to let you know the cougar headed in this direction at some point, but I haven’t found any sign of him. Have you discovered anything your way?”

“Yeah. I sure as hell did. I’m in one hell of a mess. I need your help… pronto.”

I love creating these when I need to take a break from writing. 🙂

These are cougar cubs. They are hard to distinguish from jaguar cubs, which I mention in Jaguar Pride because when they’re little, they look very similar.

I finished Billionaire in Wolf’s Clothing edits and sent it along its merry way!

She-Wolf edits are coming next.

But…today I need to pick up chocolate. I think that’s why I’m stumped on writing Jaguar Christmas. Need chocolate for inspiration! Any excuse, right???

Nook Lovers–Taming the Wild Cougar is Now Available for Preorders!

It’s annoying when authors only offer books through Amazon and for other e-readers, we can’t access it. (I have a Nook also.) So I always put my books up everywhere, but sometimes it just takes longer for the other vendors to set up the page. So it’s up! No description or anything, sigh, but it’s got a pretty picture–the cover, the 99 cent USD price and a button to PREORDER it! 🙂 <3

Cougar’s expression, listening, relaxed

It did it with Phantom Fae, my most recent fae book, and at first, I didn’t realize it was already there! Then I was trying to figure out how to do that again. lol

I can just imagine how it must be for scientists to accidentally discover something important, and then try to figure out how they did that, and try to recreate it. That’s when I read the directions. There’s no help button on Vellum that I can find. I did a Google search and it was like, it’s just so easy. Quashing swear word. Right. If it is so easy, why have I spent six hours trying to figure out what’s not working so easily.

Then it was the .doc vs .docx issue. Now, I’m not technical, so to me (I know technical geeks are rolling their eyes), but to me, the documents all look the same. The story is exactly the same. (I took Fortran, Cobol and Pascal, so it’s not that I’m totally clueless about languages, but…) as a romance writer, they look the same. lol

Anyway, that is a VERY long explanation as to why I don’t have it up on Apple yet.

I have been managing to get my word count in every day so I only have 26,000 words to go, which is AMAZING and I don’t want to give up the momentum. So off to write, and then when I have my word count in, I’ll work on Apple again. 🙂 And this time it’s GOING to work. I feel it in my bones.

Cougar on the Prowl

I’m going to town on Taming the Wild Cougar. I LOVE it when that happens. I wrote 12,000 words yesterday. I’m nearly halfway through the book. It’s just like a movie scene playing out. I love it.

Taming the Wild Cougar WEB 05082015

But I have to keep stopping to do research like I always do with books and so with this one, I was researching how many miles a human can walk in a day. Did you know that some can walk as many as 30-35 miles per day? Amazing. I’ve been walking between 5-7 miles per day, so it’s hard to believe. Especially carrying a backpack.

So how many miles can a cougar travel?

Wait, not the older woman who’s after a younger man, or the car. The CAT. Okay?

It’s amazing how our vocabulary for things that used to mean one thing have changed to mean something totally different. Take twilight, for instance. I wanted to see exactly what the definition was for twilight. OMIGOD. It’s all about vampires. What???? I want the time of day. Give me a break.

So there you have it. You can’t just say a word, you have to be really, really specific. Twilight, time of day. Vampires

And Cougar, cat. Car, Hot to trot older woman seeking younger man

Same thing when researching jaguar, NOT the car.

So I’m off on my marathon writing spree, because before long I will probably be totally stumped and it will sit there for days while I’m fighting with my muse to give me more. But maybe not! Maybe I will write a book from start to finish in record time. I’ve done it before. I hope I can this time too!

Have a great Monday! I’m off to make the halfway point on Taming the Wild Cougar!

Terry sets the scene for us …

***

Okay, I’m behind on word count. First, I’ve been writing 5,000 a day, until party day, and I left that day free. I wrote a 1,000 that day, then yesterday was supposed to be my 5,000 day, but I only wrote 1,000. 🙁 I spent the day getting contest wins to ship and responding to a million different comments. It’s great exposure, and I have to say I am sending 4 of my Heart of the Wolf, first book in the series, to 4 brand new Heart of the Wolf Series books and one of my winners got excited about my Highland medieval series, so that was so much fun.

What’s funny is in the beginning, I had no series name. Then everyone kept asking me what it was. I didn’t realize I was going to  have such a long-running series. Soooo, my fans kept calling it the Heart of the Wolf Series, and that stuck. So with Jaguar, I just said make it Heart of the Jaguar Series, and then did the same with my Cougar series. 🙂

I have to ship all the books and autograph books at the two stores that carry them today. So I won’t be able to get as much word count today either. And, I just got in first line edits on She-Wolf Leader of the Pack, so those have to take priority. *sigh*

And I’m behind on exercising. 🙁 I’ve been walking 5 miles a day, mostly stationary so I can still be working at home. But I’ve only been walking 1-2 miles with trying to write. *double sigh*

So there went all my goals. But you see, it’s not forever. And revising goals is just fine too. By writing so much in a few days, I have gotten further than I thought I would. I’m at 57,000 and need 23,000. So really getting close. And yesterday I was also brainstorming some ideas for the end of the book, jotted down a bunch of ideas, so see? I was working on the book. Just not with word count. And that’s important too.

I want to pitch White Wolf Christmas for 2017. I need to get caught up with the Legend of the White Wolf pack. They haven’t had their story told since that one came out as book 4. I need to write another jaguar book to keep the series going, but not sure who needs their story told next. Maybe someone totally different. I’m thinking of a trip to Hawaii.

Gigantic Jaguar Yawn–My what big teeth you have

My internet is really slow this morning, so driving me crazy.

Anyway, I still have to write the Jaguar Christmas story by November, so not like I don’t still have books to write. 🙂

Okay, off to get my day started. If you have picked up SEAL Wolf Hunting and have read it and loved it, I would love a review on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. I never think to mention it, but that would be great!

Have a super wonderful day! Off to do something I’m supposed to be doing now!
