Oh No! They Changed My Story!!!

East of the Sun, West of the Moon

Okay, not MY story, but I loved the Norwegian tale I read when I was a little girl.

Here is the version I read.

http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/norway034.html

I loved it but was so mad at the girl for dripping wax on him and making him go away. I felt sorry for him and loved him. Poor polar bear prince. The newer version doesn’t sound like it’s anything like my version. It’s supposed to be good for children to read. You know, probably the sanitized kind. Probably no exploding trolls and such. I like exploding trolls. I like to see the bad guys get their just rewards. 🙂

And why even bring it up???

It was the very first time that I had read about a shapeshifter and loved the sweet romance. My shapeshifters are not cursed to live their existence until someone can break the spell, yet, it made me see that shapeshifters could be just as sexy and lovable as anyone else.

I’m from the great grizzly bear state of California. And I have all kinds of different bear collections that I’ve collected over the years. And I make award-winning teddy bears. So it seemed natural to want to write about bear shifters. In honor of reading about a polar bear shifter, my first ever shifter tale, I decided to make it a polar bear shifter story.

But with all good tales, it must end so I can get back to edits on A Very Jaguar Christmas, which I was told was up on Amazon for preorder now!

And that’s it for today. I must go back to my writing cave. Carpet was replaced in the two bedrooms, and rather than shove everything back in drawers and closets, packing it all up. 🙂 So no time for edits yesterday. Just more utter chaos.

Jaguar Shifting into a Woman or a Woman Shifting into a Jaguar?

Okay, so that’s my “fun” for today. This is my tribute to Jaguar Christmas that I can’t write on right now. 🙁

Back to work on edits for Billionaire in Wolf’s Clothing. We get several of these, so it does feel like deja vu sometimes. And in a short while, it’ll be edits for She-Wolf Leader of the Pack.

Love a shifter and they’ll love you right back!

We had no hope for rain ever, in a million years. I know. Because I looked at the weather report. And it said so. No rain forever and ever and ever. And it rained!!!

So I’m happy.

Garden Structures & Review of Cougar’s Mate

arbor1 (458x640)

Even though I love nature for nature’s sake, sometimes something like this simply made garden structure is really appealing. The little brick wall and stone patio add to it. And I loved the old fashioned lantern right in the center of the arbor.

It made me want to stop and enjoy it as much as I would stop to enjoy taking pictures of the flowers.

What about you?

Okay, I had to share a great new review also for Cougar’s Mate:

From Debbie’s Book Bag

Thoughts:

Bestselling Author Terry Spear takes readers on a new adventure with the first book in a new shifter series, Heart of the Cougar. This time cougar’s that take center stage, as Spear builds her new series around another powerful, intelligent animal. Cougar’s Mate introduces readers to the town of Yuma, Colorado, ran by cougar shifters and open to helping heroine Shannon Rafferty who is on the run from those who want her dead. Deputy Chase Buchanan doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into, but he knows he has to protect this woman, this she-cat who has stolen his heart.

What I liked:

I am a Terry Spear fan from way back. And hearing that she had a new series out about another group of shifters was tantamount to Christmas for me. Spear has a way of writing that not only pulls the reader in, but it also keeps them interested and not just through one particular novel, but through everything they can possibly find that she’s written. She has an easy word flow and style that makes her writing accessible and engaging. Her characters are always intense and well developed and her world building is beyond phenomenal and I was so excited to see where she would go with her new cougar shifters. I was certainly not disappointed. Yuma is quite a town!

Bottom Line:

This is an exceptional paranormal romance. Terry Spear never disappoints. She creates characters that readers can relate to, whether they are paranormal or not. Her world building is a real strength in her writing, as is her easy style and humor. If you are looking for an engaging love story that just happens to involve cougar shifters, this one is one to read.

Cougar’s Mate is available NOW from your favorite bookseller.

I’m giving this one 5 out of 5 apples from my book bag!

Okay, now with a review like that, why wouldn’t I love to write? Thanks so much to Deb and others like her who have shared how much they love my works!

“Exciting paranormal romance with sweet hero and strong heroine!”

Paranormal Romance

COUGAR’S MATE is Book 1 in Terry Spear’s Heart of the Cougar series. As a longtime fan of Terry Spear, I was very excited to hear about this new series about cougar shifters. Happily for me, I really enjoyed this book. There is a lot of action in COUGAR’S MATE, but it doesn’t obscure the romance.

At the beginning of the story, Shannon Rafferty is a woman in crisis.Chase Buchanan is the sexy, incredibly sweet lawman she runs into. Chase is a dream.

Chase’s buddies — Hal, Dan, and Stryker — are all great guys and I look forward to reading stories about them in future books. They are all tough, former military types, but they all have a wonderful caring side. I love the way the entire town took Shannon in and supported her like one of their own. The town and the feeling of community and family it provides Shannon are almost equally as seductive as Chase’s charms. COUGAR’S MATE is an exciting paranormal romance with a strong heroine and a sweet, sexy hero!

There is absolutely nothing I didn’t love about Cougar’s Mate by Terry Spear. This is one of those books that grabs you right from the first page and doesn’t let go until the last.

“She’d never felt she was cursed, but what if she was? With three dead boyfriends to her name?”

“Hell, he loved her for all her vulnerability, her sassiness, her caring, everything that made her the she-cat that she was. Somehow, he would save her.”

This book has humor and romance and lots of heart pounding action. I loved every page of it. If you enjoy shifter books, then you will love this book. This was my first book by Terry Spear and most definitely will not be my last.

Instinct told her to run…

Cougar’s Mate pulled me into the story from page one and kept me reading until the last word.

What’s especially enjoyable is Ms. Spears’, slow build up to the physical relationship between Shannon and Chase. It’s not rushed which makes it feel natural. Just when you think things are going Shannon and Chase’s way, trouble rear its head.

During the last part of the story I didn’t want to put the book down so I could continuing reading and see what happened to this pair.

Cougar’s Mate is the first of a new series by Ms. Spears and I can’t wait for book two.

Woohoo!!! Okay, enough dancing around the room, or skipping outside to take pictures. Time to ship books and then get back to the business of writing.

Any plans for the weekend???

What’s Next???

018f1-theviking27shighlandlass28533x80029

Onward and upward! Next on the agenda is The Viking’s Highland Lass, but  I had to finish listening to the audio book chapters for The Trouble with Demons to proof it and then make the suggested changes, so was working on that since 0-dark thirty this morning. I keep running out of WiFi time, *sigh*, and some of that is from having to download and proof the two audio books I’ve been going over. And some of it is from downloading pictures for book covers.

So I finished and sent it off, then remembered I’d received another interview I have to fill out. No wonder I wonder where the day has gone to and I haven’t gotten any writing done. But that’s okay, since all this other stuff needs to be done also.

Okay, so one of my beta readers is going over Cougar’s Mate and asked if the time would be right for the heroine to run as a cougar. To make sure it is as accurate as possible, I made certain the time was right. So if you read Cougar’s Mate, I will let you in on a secret. She can’t tell you how far she went and how long it took her each day because she has no idea. No watch, you see. And no pedometer.

So here’s the story–a cougar’s range is usually 50-150 miles. But they don’t travel during the day most of the time. They make day beds and then hunt at dusk and dawn. One cougar they know of had traveled 1500 miles, but they had no idea how long it had taken him. They travel around 15-20 miles per day. Which would make sense if their rage is only 50-150 miles.

Now, she would be moving a little faster to leave her area, but on the other hand, she’d have to be really careful not to be spotted either by humans or trespassing in a bear or wolf pack’s territory. She has to hunt for food. She doesn’t even really know where she’s going.

So, now the place is fiction, but if I said she went from Canyon, Texas to the Rocky Mountain National Park, and she’s only able to travel 15 miles per day, that would be 33 days. If 20, then 25 days. They travel in a zig-zag path looking for prey.

Isn’t that cool?

And here you thought I just made all this stuff up. 🙂

Have a super great Tuesday!!!

Happy Valentine’s Day from Terry Spear and her Highlanders!

highland valentine copy (640x640)

Doesn’t that sound like a Celtic band? Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be as special without some Highlanders wearing kilts in the mix.

I reached 65,000 yesterday on Cougar’s Mate, disappointed that I hadn’t done more than that. I had hoped to dig in and write to 70,000. But I have a problem. When writing a story, we have to make sure that something doesn’t seem too contrived.

Oh, I know, I’m writing about humans who shift into cougars or wolves or jaguars. LOL

But still, heroes and heroines have to be smart. That’s why we root for them. It’s okay if they do rash and dumb things if they’re trying to protect someone who needs protecting. We can buy that. Motivation is always the key.

I’m still brainstorming with friends to come up with a good solution. Otherwise you will think, oh yeah, I know what’s going to happen next, and I don’t want you to. 🙂 That’s the whole fun of writing–the twists and turns, the unexpected shift, the journey.

When I was writing a YA (young adult) book, I read part of it to my daughter and asked, “What do you think is going to happen next?”

I had led her in one direction. There could be only one path to take. But I had a really, really neat different direction to turn in. The unexpected. She told me where she knew it was going. I smiled.

“Well, it is, isn’t it?”

“Nope.”

Not to be thwarted, she gave me three other ways I could go with it and I was like, YES!!!! I had come up with the perfect twist. It worked for the situation. And she’s a great reader, so if she couldn’t figure it out, I had it made.

I told her where I was going with it and this time she smiled. She’d never thought of it.

I’ve been told if you get stuck to write 20 ways the story could go. I find sometimes just brainstorming with someone else will help me to come up with an idea. One of my fans actually did help me in one thing. It had to do with one of the story elements that I had alluded to, but only as a passing thought. Just the mention of that one element helped me to strengthen the bad guys’ motivation. Would I have thought of it on my own? I might have during edits. But maybe not.

Off to work on the story and maybe something will come to me!

Have a super day! It’s supposed to be 71 here today. Unreal in Feb!

Happy Valentine’s Day from me to you!
