Jasmine Growing Wild in the Woods

I never think of plants I buy in the store as being native or naturalized in native settings in certain parts of the world. They’re just, you know, grown in pots at nurseries. So when I saw the beautiful yellow flowers in the woods behind a neighbor’s house near where I pick up my mail, I thought he must have planted them. But he hadn’t. I’ve seen them on the wetlands walk too, but didn’t realize these were growing on the walk through the development also. This time I took my camera.

The southern pines and the yaupon holly growing rampant in the pictures above are also native, and I have a few of them growing in my yard. In other places, I’ve had to buy them at the store. They’re really beautiful.

I’ve grown the Carolina Jasmine in my garden before and they’re so pretty. But it’s wonderful to have plants that normally grow in your area, and not have to baby plants that don’t like the heat, humidity, and the few days of freezes we have. I opt for easy maintenance and hardy plants, as much as possible. Sometimes even hardy plants succumb to unusual weather patterns.

I managed to get my word count for yesterday and the day before and the corgis go home to their momma and daddy tonight!

I did get more writing in this week than when I have baby here. I’m up to 57K, hope to reach 60K today. Only 23K left to go so far! Well, as far as reaching minimum word count. But this morning, I was thinking of a scene. Not exactly thinking of it, the characters had taken over and were making up their own scene. I love it when that happens. Especially when I remember it! Off to write it down before I forget it!

Have super lovely day!!

The Woods…

The original woods and then the fun versions using Topaz Labs. I had the baby over and sometimes while she’s sleeping, I can play with photos, but trying to do much of anything else is hard. We do a lot together and have fun though.

If I were writing about the woods, looking at the different pictures, it would evoke different moods for the story. Everything is a picture to me. I wrote 1,000 words last night after baby went home, and when I went to bed, I was thinking of another scene. I could see the Highlanders being angry with the encroaching clan, swords drawn, words spoken.  I was too tired to write it down, and that usually means I forget it by the time I wake up. But, thankfully, I still remember it, so will start with it first thing this morning.

I’m really at the end of the story, so I need to finish it up.

Oh, and so far, it looks like I don’t have a rat problem any longer. Max killed one of them. He’s the white one and so fast. Both Havanese are. They shoot out of the house like bullets, so I have to warn birds before I allow the dogs to leave the house. They’ve caught 3 birds, but that was before I started making them sit before I allow them to leave. They didn’t kill them, but caught them, and I made them release them, then I carried them out front so they could recover and they flew off.

The rats only come out at night, so last night and this morning in the dark, they would be on the feeders. I turn on the porch light and release the dogs. Last night there were none. And none this morning. So I might have found a natural deterrent. 🙂

Off to write!!! Have a wonderful day!

A Walk Through the Wetlands

I’m off to work with baby. But I loved taking a stroll through the wetlands, watching for snakes! And hoping we didn’t get lost. The leaves covered so much of the ground in the wooded area that it was hard to locate a real path. 🙂  I loved catching the sunlight streaming through the woods and didn’t realized I’d captured some sun flare. 🙂 <3

Hoping still to get to 30K on My Highlander today. Reached 28K last night. 🙂

Have a super day!!

The Bicycle in the Woods

bicycle-in-cameron-park-in-the-woods-recoveredWe were taking this walk in the park, a bunch from the library where I worked, and came across the bicycle. There was no sign of anybody. I took the shot, wondering whatever had become of the rider. Well, the shift overcame him. 🙂 He might have been lounging in the tree above us. A jaguar? A cougar? Maybe a wolf hidden in the woods? I never thought to look up!

With the shadows and filtered light in the semi-dark woods and all the vegetation, the bike was hard to see. And seemed so discordant with the wildness of the park to be there all by itself. Not in a way that said its owner had met a tragic end, just sitting there, waiting for its rider to return and take it home. But for the moment, it was enjoying sitting in the park, listening to the birds and watching the butterflies flutter by, and amused at all the hikers taking this path, even me, stopping to take its picture, instead of sitting in the dusty garage watching a black widow weave a web nearby.

I had “lost” this picture and forgotten all about it. But when I found the photo, it reminded me of that day in the park with my friends, the bicycle, and the absent rider, while the bicycle waited so patiently for its rider to return.

The Devil’s Messenger, Part 2, A True WWII Story

heavy fog rocky area (640x480) dark

Yesterday, I started to tell the true story about my dad’s experience with The Devil’s Messenger as one of his crew members called it.

Here is Part 2 of The Devil’s Messenger:

The Devil’s Messenger, Part 2

by Terry Spear

“Briefing mission, now!” the first sergeant bellowed as he stepped into the barracks.

Walter picked up the Ouija board and set it back on the table as one of the men playing poker griped, “Gee, Sarge, I was winning.”

Walter glanced back at the Ouija board as the superstitious crewman slapped his shoulder. “Get rid of it, Wilde. It’s bad luck.”
* * *
Following the briefing, Walter hurried into the barracks and grabbed his brown-leather flight jacket, then glanced over at the Ouija board. Was it truly evil? Would it harm the mission? Walter slipped the board into its wooden box and closed the lid.

“Hey, Walter!” an airman shouted into the barracks. “Mess sarge’s got a Spam sandwich for you to go!”

“Sure thing.” Walter tossed the box onto the bunk and strode to the mess hall. After grabbing his meal, Walter and the rest of the crew headed for the armament shack. Soon after, he and the other crewmen hauled their loaded guns onto their Flying Fortress. But before they took off, he grabbed the Ouija board, intending to dump it in the ocean on their mission. Just in case the man knew what he was talking about when he said the board wasn’t anything to mess around with. Then they waited in their assigned positions in breathless anticipation as the engines roared to life.

It was Walter’s seventh mission, despite still only being sixteen. He’d lied about his age to get in, anxious the war would end before he’d have a chance to fight the good fight along with all the other war heroes he’d watched on the big movie screen back home.

While enroute to Germany, heavy anti-aircraft fire flew into the cloudless sky, popping and cracking in black puffs of smoke as it missed the B-17. Walter manned his guns as left waist gunner and soon hit a Focke-Wulf FW-190, highly regarded as one of Germany’s best fighter planes–certainly a match for the spitfire. He reached down to grab more ammunition, then saw the box containing the Ouija board shaking with the vibration of the plane as it rested on his parachute covering the hole where the last gunner had died. He pulled the chute aside and slipped the box through the hole where it plummeted into the sea.

As he turned to ready his guns once more, splinters of metal from high explosive shells ripped through the plane. Tearing through Walter’s oxygen and communication lines, the still-hot shrapnel cut through his flight jacket and lodged in his left arm. The seven-inch piece of jagged metal severed muscle, splintered bone and sliced blood vessels that caused the blood to pour out into a steady stream as Walter fought for air.

Seeing he was losing consciousness, the right waist gunner leaned down to him and offered his oxygen before Walter passed out.
