Okay, I’m back to edits! Have a lovely day! Oh, shoot, it’s Wednesday and that means garbage day. Usually get it out at oh-dark-thirty. Can’t believe it’s Wednesday already!!!

So it was warmer out and my neighbor was taking his garbage out, so we had to do more socialization training. Max was licking his sandaled feet. That is progress.

Kissing the Highlander at Barnes and Noble!

Misty and Cold–not sure what the green stuff is that the farmer planted but it makes it look like spring. It isn’t. It’s cold. 🙂 I think we had snow showers/freezing rain at some point. It didn’t stick, but it didn’t feel like rain. It was too dark to see on one of my jaunts outside with the puppies.

Max and Tanner

They really have been angels. No chewing on…well, mostly, no chewing on stuff they shouldn’t. I put my wool coat on the coffee table, gloves, hat, so I can easily grab them and run the puppies outside. When they have to go, they have to go. I’ve taken to making them sit on my chair while I get bundled up. That way I don’t have to worry about them. So they had been playing with an empty birdseed sack and they had gotten really quiet. I stopped writing to see what they were up to. They had pulled down my coat and hat. Tanner was happily chewing on my hat. Max was lying on top of my coat, chewing on his chewstick. Ack.

Sooooo, they’re mostly good. And no accidents inside for several days. So we’re doing good.

Just wanted to share for our Nook readers, which I’m one, that Kissing the Highlander is now available for preorders at B&N!

I received first edits on Silver Wolf Christmas. Which means: one seemingly insignificant change can change EVERYTHING. Sooo that always means first edits are a bear. Lots of gnashing of teeth. I read through the comments last night, but I’m not a night person, so trying to tackle it wasn’t going to happen. It doesn’t mean that there are tons of changes, but just one change can affect tons of stuff in a mss. One time, they wanted me to put a kiss sooner in the book. I thought, no problem. But guess what, folks. When the hero and heroine have had that first kiss, it changes everything between them. The dynamics are different. They’re not anticipating it any longer. Been there, done that. AND you have to add new conflict to keep them from going further. Yes, I’m murder on my hero and heroine.

I write romance. What can I say?

Anyway, I always tackle the simple stuff first, but even that can change everything. Sometimes, I say no. That the comments made are wrong. That the way they’re suggesting the change will ruin the whole story. I used to roll over and play dead. Whatever my editors wanted. But when they started suggesting radical changes that would have destroyed the characterization, the black moment, the whole point of the book, I said no. I couldn’t do it.

Some battles aren’t worth fighting. Some changes are worth making. And some, absolutely not.

*sigh* And that means that I’m going to get WAY behind on SEAL Wolf Diving for Trouble. I was 900 words behind yesterday, which considering I was 6,000 words behind is not bad. But I need 3400 words today and with doing revisions on the other book, probably not happening.

Despite not wanting to even look at it this morning, I’ve got my sword in hand and I’m going to face the battle. You have to do it, you know. It doesn’t matter if you don’t want to. You just have to get into fighting stance and tackle it, one step at a time. And then, it’s just like word count. It happens!

The puppies got me up at 4 am. I’m a morning person, but NOT that much of a morning person. I’ll be glad when they can last through the night and wake at a more reasonable hour. Like 5. 🙂

I used to be so envious when multi-published authors were complaining about deadlines. I thought I’d never be one of those. Ever. And I thought they were so lucky, so quit complaining. LOL

So chin up. Smile. You can be one too!

Unless you’re a reader, and then you can just dive into the pure enjoyment of reading for pleasure.

SEAL Wolf Hunting

I’m working on SEAL Wolf Diving and trying to keep after word count. Have 2,900 words to go today to make my word count for yesterday–so wrote 3,000 this morning already. But have to keep after it.

And I have to work on Call of the Cougar’s audiobook proof. She forgot the prologue, so that’s the first problem. But I have to read over every sentence to make sure it matches and then write up everything that doesn’t, at the time that it was on the recording. So it takes time. The project was about 9 hours, I think, and it’ll take me more than that to keep stopping and making notes for the narrator, and taking breaks to do other things….

Soooo, yes, it was wonderful when I began getting multiple contracts. Just so I could say I was working toward some goal. Before? They were all just for myself. Of course this is in the prehistoric days when self-publishing wasn’t an option and I couldn’t share my stories unless a publisher picked them up. But those were the days when I wrote and wrote and wrote, and then tried to sell and sell and sell.

Have a wonderful Monday! I’m off to get the rest of my word count done so I can feel at peace with the world around me. Playing catchup all the time is not fun.

But you know you have to have glitches. So for whatever reason when I tried to convert the docx in Jutoh to epub/etc, the chapter headings didn’t show up on two of the authors’ works. Have no idea why not. They are formatted exactly the same as all the other chapter headings. Anyway, so it’s a total pain and I’ll have to probably go in this morning and manually book mark the links. That’s why I love Jutoh so much. It does it automatically, no mistakes, normally and it’s done.

So Amazon’s will take a while longer.

Because: I got SEAL Wolf Hunting back for final copyedits. I’ll have one more final proof to go over after this. And I will be getting first edits on Silver Wolf Christmas next. And I received two more blog requests for Jaguar Pride’s release on Feb 3. And I only wrote 300 words of 2500 on SEAL Wolf Diving for Trouble. argh.

I really need to get 2500 done a day. With so much to do on the other stuff, Amazon formatting, finishing up SEAL Wolf Hunting, NEED to proof the audiobook on Call of the Cougar, which has been on the backburner now for about four days, bought another book cover (did I ever mention I’m a book cover hoarder, but it was so neat!) and that means figuring out a title, tagline, etc, etc, etc, write the 2 blogs, including this one and another this morning, and now write 4700 words today on SEAL Wolf Diving for Trouble.

And then there are the puppies. Well, they got me up at 4 am, so the routine is they go to sleep in my lap so I can write, for an hour or two. They don’t get to eat until 7 or 8, but that means as soon as they wake, it’s time to potty again. *sigh* The adventures of puppyhood. Luckily, they’re not having accidents, and they’re not chewing on things they shouldn’t, for the most part. I caught Tanner with two of my socks yesterday.

Max is wearing a cone to keep him from chewing on his stitches from being neutered. He’s been grouchy with Tanner, partly because Tanner keeps grabbing his Elizabethan collar and tugging. But I think he might just not feel well either. So I’ve been trying to keep them separate to chew on chewsticks so Max has more time to rest up.

Okay, got to get to work.

Wow, the time is galloping away!

Do you ever feel that way? That when you want to do something, take a trip to the islands, or something great like finishing the week of work and you’re OFF, that it takes forever to get there? But if you have a deadline or multiple deadlines looming, the time flies? It’s like if I leave early for an appointment, I hit every green light and have no traffic and am there even earlier than planned, then have to sit and wait. But if I’m running late? Yep, you guessed it….I get behind the tractor trailer traveling 15 mph in the no passing zone, hit every red light and get stuck behind every Sunday driver.

Funny how life works that way. 🙂

Puppies and Their Antics!

Max and Tanner

Max is 6 months old, Tanner 10 weeks Havenese puppies.

Still working daily on getting word count goal. 5,000 done, 75,000 to go on SEAL Wolf Diving! Have to have 2500 today, so have 200. I know. A ways to go. But I have to stop and figure where I’m going with this next. Total seat of the pants writer. Can’t plot for the life of me.

It is freezing out!!! 13 degree chill factor. It’s just Tanner and me this morning while Max is still at the vet. We’ll pick him up this afternoon.

Tanner’s pretty much housebroken now. He woke me up late last night to go out in the Arctic cold–well, for us–and I didn’t mind because he really had to go out, and he went right back to bed after that. He hasn’t had any accidents for about 3 days. So it’s getting much better.

While I was getting this video ready, he was barking at that little dog that was barking, unbeknownst to him that the little dog barking was him. After I played with the video a few more times, he ignored it. Which is what I wanted. This might be a great training video to get him used to dogs barking in his house and ignoring it. 🙂

Now, if only I could do that with Max when he comes home.

It was fun working with Tanner all by himself yesterday, more training today. He was shaking hands, like Max will do. But unlike Max, Tanner will offer either paw. And he’s learned down, but I hadn’t been sure because Max would lie down and I’d have to give him a treat while Tanner was trying to get the other one out of my hand. To do it on verbal command, not yet. But bringing my hand down to the floor works. So next it will be verbal command only. Both circle at the same time and that’s really cute. 🙂

Okay, got to get to work on word count. Tanner finally fell asleep on my lap after 3 1/2 hours of playing and going outside…time for me to get to work.

Okay, I’m still formatting Kissing the Highlander and I’ve started work on SEAL Wolf Diving for Trouble, title probably to change. I calculated I need 2500 words per day to make it in time for the deadline. I got the first 2500 yesterday, 77,500 to go.

When you start out at the beginning, it seems like so far to go. But I always have fun researching, so back to formatting, then while I’m waiting on the other authors to send me their stuff, I’ll work on my word count for SEAL.

Today is Max’s day to go into surgery. Hopefully, it will help reduce his urge to be a male dog quite as much. I don’t intend to breed them, and from what I’ve learned, unless they’re working dogs, it’s best to have them neutered. At least, if you want to have pets only.

Okay, I’m off to do work before I have to take poor Max in. Tanner is going to feel lost without him. I won’t be picking up Max until 3 pm tomorrow.

Have a super Wednesday, trash is out, need to get stool samples for the vet, omigod, my life is so dog bound now. LOL

And loving it. I have a couple of more puppy videos, but haven’t had any time to do anything with them. Need to take lots. Tanner is growing by leaps and bounds. He is such a fluff ball now.

I’m still formatting for Kissing the Highlander. When I received everyone’s novellas, the italics were stripped out, argh, and some of the authors have tons of italicized words. That, and trying to make everything uniform as far as front and back matter and section divisions, etc. If I do this again, hopefully, we can all be on the same page next time and I won’t have to do so much reformatting.

Phantom Fae has gone out to my first beta reader. And then after I make changes and read it over again, it will go out to another.

When I was reading books on writing, one author said to make sure you have that conflict right from the beginning. The bomb going off in the school, but not. Something that makes you want to read what happens next and next and next. Yet, you have to have character-driven plots for romance, not strictly plot-driven scenarios.

Okay, so I’m still pondering. But I need to get back to formatting Kissing the Highlander.

Why Do People Do the Things They Do???

I was in the grocery store right before Christmas and the lady in front of me was talking to me about getting in the wrong line because the people in front of her had all kinds of issues. I didn’t know what they were, but we were smiling and laughing about that sort of thing. One day, I was in line behind some folks that had to run out to their car and get a jar of coins to help pay for their groceries. So yes, it can be trying.

But I wasn’t bothered by it. I was getting the last of my Christmas food for the kids’ arrival and was of good cheer. The old woman behind me was scowling and I smiled at her, trying to put her in a better mood. She asked, “What time is it?”

I told her. She asked two more times.

Then the folks ahead of us were done, but not, forgot to pay for one more item, and the lady in front of me and I were just smiling. Hey, it happens, and I was fortunate to have someone to talk to that was really nice and it made her feel better for the delay.

Once I had my items on the conveyer belt, I put the little divider down and turned to the woman behind me and asked if she wanted me to help her unload her groceries.

“No!” she snapped at me. “Just move out of my way.”

“I’m sorry, but the lady in front of me is still paying for her groceries.” And I turned my back on the woman behind me and figured that was the last I’d try to be nice to her. Some people are just not very nice. They’re sour and dour and maybe they always lived their lives that way. Some think as they get older, they can behave even worse.

Who knows?

But she proceeded to get aggressive, running into my backside with her backside to load groceries onto the belt. Now, she could have gone to the end of the belt and loaded a good number of groceries on it without touching me. But I didn’t move, because my basket was in front of me, and I didn’t want to crowd the woman who was using her credit card in front of me. I wished her a Merry Christmas and then I was cheerily talking to the clerk. She saw my puppy stuff and asked me about that as she ran my things through and the woman behind me just scowled at us.

I was bothered by the old woman being so nasty. I kept telling myself to ignore her nastiness, but I couldn’t.

One time, I was in the parking lot and an older man looked so grim, I smiled and said, “Hi.” It made his day and he began talking away to me. Another day, I asked an older man if I could take his basket for him, and he watched me, shocked that I was taking it to the return and not using it to go into the grocery store. I had just returned my own. But he looked to be struggling to get his groceries into the car a bit, and I thought I could help him at least with the basket return. He told me he thought I was going to use the basket and was so cheered that I did a “good deed” for him. Another day, a woman did that to me, my first time, lol, and she asked if she could return my basket too.

It really made me feel great. Doing a little bit for some people can really make their day, though I’m in Texas and so it can be so here. Or Oklahoma, same way. I had car trouble at a mall in NJ once and three lovely men from England helped jumpstart my car while no one from NJ would give me the time of day. I was twenty-one at the time, so not a threat at all. Not that all are like that, but some places more people are willing to help out.

And this brings me to my stories. The Phantom Fae queen had killed her husband over some marital dispute. But at 5 this morning when the puppies got me up to take them out, I began to think about it. What was her story? Her real story? People are the way they are for some reason. Maybe they’ve always been bad-natured and been allowed to be that way. Pampered, so to speak. Or maybe they had a bad life growing up, they just had something horrible happen to them, financially, losing a family member, a friend, a pet, or are ill. We never know.

But in our stories, we have to know. 🙂 So, I had to come up with a reason. Maybe not a full reason, but something that will reveal some hints about the person.

Why was the woman so nasty in the grocery store even after I reached out to be nice to her? Who knows. I’ve known people like that, one who was an older friend of my mother’s and lied about her husband dying. For years, we thought that was the case. Then her cousin told my mother that the woman’s husband had left her for another woman. I think that had left her embittered. She could never deal with it, so just wrote him off as dead. For her age, because even though divorce has been going on for eons, it just hasn’t been as acceptable in some time periods, she found it much easier to be a “widow,” than a divorcee. But she was really spoiled, her ex-husband having left her well off, and her family too. So I would go with my mother and her friends to card games and she was always so nasty. “Quit talking! Play the game.” The point of the game was to socialize, at least the rest of us thought. We had fun and joked about her behavior later.

My mother would often say, “Oh, it’s not your turn?” One lady always played out of turn because she couldn’t remember. They were fun games and well, someday I should probably use them in a story, come to think of it.

A little after the grocery store incident, a fan sent a video of a woman at a grocery store where another woman allowed her kid to run the basket into the other woman. So the victim poured a drink all over the kid’s head. The kid screams and cries. The mother is furious and storms off with her kid, and I’m thinking, okay, so what if this woman behind me was that kid. Only the victim hadn’t reacted, like I hadn’t. Just ignored it. And the kid continued to act badly over the years, and anytime she wanted her way, she got it, through any means available.

If I had dumped one of the Dr. Pepper’s on the woman’s head that I was buying for my SIL for Christmas, maybe she wouldn’t have done something like that again. Of course, I would have been arrested.

So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
