A Blurry Photo…or Did I Catch a Shifter Shifting?

Polar Bear Shifting

Polar Bear Shifting

At first, I was disappointed. I mean, sheez, this was the first time in the 3 visits I’ve made to the Nebraska zoo that the polar bear was actually sitting up and looking at me and I got ALL of him in the shot!!!! Obviously, I took the picture too fast in my zeal and….no, wait…

Okay, this is a G-rated post, so I can’t show you what he turned into. Hot, naked, male.

But here’s BEFORE the shifter was caught on camera shifting.

polar bear head raised

Darn! Where’s the rest of his nose??? It was soooo good too. His head was up. I was too excited. At least he wasn’t shifting at the time. Well, ACTUALLY, I was trying to capture his paws in this shot.

polar bear head down

And this is his usual pose.

*sigh*

I did want to say that I actually got my word count on Billionaire in Wolf’s Clothing! And finished writing the book! Now, I’m rereading it and editing more, but it’s done!!!

Have a super wonderfully fun day!

Researching Kilts and Pirates by Nancy Lee Badger

Thanks to Nancy for sharing her story with us!

My Hunted Highlander-large

My Hunted Highlander by Nancy Lee Badger

Researching Kilts and Pirates

My Hunted Highlander, released June 16th, is the third and final book in the Kilted Athletes Through Time series. In my story, I take the readers through time, and twist my plot to include Scottish pirates. Before writing the first line, I had already decided to have Niall Sinclair captured by pirates. The pirates save his life by pulling him from the North Sea. To escape, he decides to romance a very special woman. Blair MacIan happens to be the captain of The Black Thistle.

Researching pirates took me places I have never been before! I found books in my local library, such as: Encyclopedia of Ships & Seafaring; The Pirate’s Own Book; The Pirate Wars. The internet brought me to various sites, as well. Links shared by other authors kept me busy, too.
The book blurb sets the tone:

Plucked naked from the North Sea, bruised and nearly drowned, Niall Sinclair wakes bound to the mast of the pirate ship, The Black Thistle. Hiding his identity, and brutalized by the first mate and other seamen, their captain comes to his aid. Her identity, and gender, are a surprise, and his physical reaction to her makes him nearly forget his need to escape, and return to his clan. When kidnapped from her shipbuilding business in modern day Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the last place Blair MacIan figured to end up, was at the helm of a pirate ship in 1603 Scotland. With her abusive husband dead, and the ship, the crew, and their people under her care, the last thing she needed was to fish a naked man from the sea. His ravaged face and ragged sandy hair could not detract from his magnificence, and she sensed in him, a means for her own escape.

How these two people react, while surrounded by her pirate crew, was fun to write. The ship, her history as a modern shipbuilder, and the fury of a storm at sea all came together even before the villain captures her and her son, and wrenches them into the future. For a fast-paced story filled with pirates, time travel, and spicy romance, check out My Hunted Highlander.

But I’m still king of the treetops in here…

The top picture was taken of him right at the glass. He looked straight at me and I barely had time for the camera to partially focus before he moved off.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorilla:

The word “gorilla” comes from the history of Hanno the Navigator, (circa 500 BC) a Carthaginian explorer on an expedition on the west African coast to the area that later became Sierra Leone.[3] They encountered “a savage people, the greater part of whom were women, whose bodies were hairy, and who our interpreters called Gorillae”.[4] The word was then later used as the species name, though it is unknown whether what these ancient Carthaginians encountered were truly gorillas, another species of ape or monkeys, or humans.[5]

And that is your lesson for today. I had 77,700+ words yesterday, but I decided to move things around and that cut 1500 words out, so I’m at 76674 now and revising to the end, then doing it again. It’s ALMOST finished. 🙂 Billionaire, that is! And now it’s getting fun. Because now I can add the really fun details in each of the scenes and not worry about getting the whole book written. Because it’s already written. 🙂

Off to work on it. Have a great day!!

I Think My Puppies are Part Wolf…

Wolves of Ely

Wolves of Ely

I took this picture of the wolf pack at Ely, The International Wolf Center. The black wolf, Luna, is barely visible. She’s the alpha female of the pack. Aidan and Denali are brothers. And the other wolf, Boltz, is Luna’s brother.

I think I’m raising a couple of wolf cubs. I picked up new food for the puppies since Max is now 1 years old. Tanner is still on puppy food at 9 mos. But man, they tried to rip through the sacks like a couple of wolves. They wolf down their food like they’ve been starving for days. I’m getting some dishes that will make them take a little more time to get to their food. I tried an insert in their own dishes, but it didn’t work well.

And usually at night they’re fine about not getting fed again, for the most part. But not last night. One feeding of the new stuff and they were practically howling for more. Whining, trying to figure a way to get to the food way up above. And here I worried they might not like it!

Havanese are oftentimes finicky eaters, all the forums I read say. They barely will eat their food during the day. NOT mine. They are a couple of wolves.

Heat Wave–Need Some Rain, Please!

Even the Lizards are Thirsty in Texas

I have to say that I wrote and wrote and wrote on Billionaire, managing to get 5500 yesterday. Thought I had done more than that, but it got me up to 68,389 words. That means I have less than 12,000 left to write! Which means I’ll write about 6,000 more than that. It’s just the minimum, but I still have several scenes to write. 🙂

Still, I’m getting there! And hope to be there by the weekend.

I took this photo of the lizard and the bottle of wine at a museum gift shop in Austin, only in Texas. 🙂 I added the grunge background to make the critter and his poison of choice stand out.

Here’s a fun black and white version.

black and white lizard and wine

But with 100 degree heat every day and no rain in sight, and no relief from 100 degree heat every day, it seemed appropriate.

Even so, it hasn’t been bad. My plants would have all needed watering by now if we hadn’t had so much rain before. And the temps are nice in the morning and not to bad late at night. If a breeze blows, it helps. I have to take the puppies out in it so I don’t have much choice. In the middle of the heat, I have to stand in the shade. It’s just too hot otherwise.

I started a new regimen with the puppies. After staying up so late the other night and getting up so early, I took a nap and decided to allow the puppies to decide where they would be while I did so. Max went into the crate and took his nap. Tanner slept by the door. It worked! They both came to see me to tell me after 30 mins I  had taken enough of a nap, and sure enough, they both had to go potty outside. I tried this about a week ago and both wanted in bed with me. So I had to put them  in their crate.

They still might not be ready for this, but I’m working them up to sleeping on their beds or in the crate without having to be “locked” in nights. But for now, we’re working on the occasional nap time.

Have a super crazy and wonderful day!

Uniformity–to a Degree on Book Covers

The Dark Fae

The Deadly Fae

The Winged Fae

The Ancient Fae

Dragon Fae

Hawk Fae

Phantom Fae

Golden Fae

The World of Fae

Golden Fae is not coming out until I finish some other deadline projects first, but a couple of years ago, I was at conference and there were a number of YA book bloggers there so I passed out my book marks. An author said that I needed to make my cover fonts more uniform because it was a series.

fae book marks

These are the book marks that show the non-uniformity. Now I’ll have to change them out. But for now, I just need to get the books redone and uploaded.

The problem was the books came out in different years and my computer has crashed a number of times. So I lost fonts and couldn’t find the ones I picked up along the way. One of the covers was done for me, so she had put my name in the middle of the book. And on a couple, I had put my name at the bottom, the title at the top. All were in different fonts. So I upgraded my Photoshop Elements 5 to 13, not yet ready for a subscription service for the bigger package that designers are using so I could get some upgraded fonts and use them.

This font gives a slightly more whimsical appearance because they are YA, though adults love them, and they do have a lot of humor. All my books do. My daughter told me once when I said that darker seemed to sell, I’ll make mine darker, “Mom, you always have rainbows in your stories.”

🙂 <3 Not rainbows literally, ever, hmm, I should put one in one of my stories…but figuratively. I always have humor in the stories. It just comes naturally for me, even though the stories have some thoughtful thoughts that are more serious.

What really got me going on this though was I had just created a cover for a novella that will be in an anthology. I didn’t realize they were going to include covers or that I’d have to have one so soon. So since my cover artist is swamped, I didn’t want to bother her with making one just for the novella. And came up with this.

Covert Cougar Christmas

But what really got me started on redoing the fae covers was that a fellow author–which I love, by the way–shared that she used this really cool formatting program for her books, it was easy, and took no time at all. It creates Table of Contents, Epubs, Mobi, has cool large letters at the beginning of a chapter, automatically turns the first sentence into caps for scenes, has a neat scene divider, automatically converts my left adjusted mss to book format, AND has all the headings for me so that I don’t have to mess with them. Like, chapter 1…and Preface, About the Author, etc. And the best part? It has a box you fill out with the code for your book on Ibooks, Amazon, and BN. I need to set up a different file for one for Kobo.

It’s Vellum, and what’s really neat is that I can take my Windows docx and slip it into Vellum on my Mac, add a few book details and then upload them to Ibooks, something I couldn’t do before. I was going through Smashwords. But it’s always better to go directly through the site as covers and such were taking forever to be updated by going through the middle man.

I’ve had the Mac for a while, couldn’t figure out how to use it, so when I learned about Vellum (only on Mac unfortunately), I was determined to learn how to do it and upload my first book to Ibooks. Since I’d already moved Dragon Fae over, though not the first in the series, but at the time I hadn’t uploaded it to SW, I figured I’d finally get a new book uploaded to Ibooks. Didn’t happen. So I used it as my test project.

After getting it set up the way I wanted, I submitted it. And worked on The Dark Fae, first book in the series next.

So why did this spur me to change my covers? They wanted bigger covers. Uploading to BN and Amazon, the file size had to be smaller. Ibooks wants bigger. *sigh* So I changed out the two covers, and then realized if I had to go through all this work with all of them, I might as well make them all uniform. So I’ve got to do that again and reupload them. *double sigh*

And that’s it. Two books uploaded to Ibooks, pulled from SW. The other neat thing was that you can automatically create buy links to a book you want to include in the back. Maybe I should include it for the whole series. Hadn’t thought of that. But in any event, I have the excerpt to the next book, and now the buy link to the respective vendor. And the other really cool thing is that they take that one bigger cover and immediately resize it for all the vendors. I love all the features that helped me to save some time, even though I’m redoing covers, which I needed to do anyway.

But of course, I turned in She-Wolf edits, they changed the title for SEAL Wolf Diving for Trouble to SEAL Wolf in Too Deep (which means they’re working on the cover), and I’m still working on Billionaire. I’ve been managing word count, though if I could just stay focused, I’d have it finished. I have 17,235 words to go, and I’ve been printing out pages and editing it every day. Stayed up past midnight to work on it some more.

I hope the new covers work for the fae series. What do you think about Covert Cougar Christmas?

I’m also working on Taming the Wild Cougar, but that will be a full length novel.

Your Reaction…Their Reaction

Puppies and Kids are a lot a like. I talked with a group of mothers once before I was married and had kids of my own. I was a brand new 2LT and was told I had to go to a military wives’ luncheon, and so I did. Everyone was talking about their kids.  I knew something about them. I was one once. I babysat them when I was a teen. But even more so, I had raised dogs and a cat. They’re like kids. Don’t ever tell a mother who doesn’t own a pet that kids and pets are a lot alike.

It can be a real conversation killer.

I actually used the scene in a book: Bound by Danger. LOL Life’s happenings can be perfect for fictionalized stories.

I can talk on a lot of subjects: travel, places I’ve lived, other jobs I’ve had, pets, and really, kids. But at the time, not my own.

So there I sat, eating my lunch, smiling, and glad when it was through. Now, years later, I can go to another club luncheon and hear all about surgeries and illnesses. Not there yet either.

When I asked folks what their 3-year-olds do, there was a common theme: copy what the adults do. Kids want to grow up. They want to be adults, doing what adults do, having the freedom that adults have.

They watch adults to see their take on things, and they learn to react in the same way. Kids, and pets, would love all your attention, and all your loving. If they don’t get it, they can go elsewhere to entertain themselves. And sometimes get into trouble over it. Does it mean they’re bad?

No, just bored.

A friend said she was going to send me an article about how our actions can influence our pets. Did I know that?

Oh absolutely.

Here’s an example. When the phone rings, I jump up and run for it. Yes, I don’t have one near my desk. Why? It’s not a bad thing to jump up and run for it. Gets me moving, my heart pumping, burns more calories. But the puppies also react. They go crazy, bark, race around, head for the phone, wonder why I’m not going to do anything with it, watch me. It’s a telemarketer, I return to the desk, puppies settle down.

Tanner wanting down from the chair to help answer the phone

Tanner wanting down from the chair to help answer the phone

Next time, I have the phone at my desk. Just talked to my son so it’s still sitting on my desk. And the puppies jump up. But I don’t. I look at the caller ID, telemarketer, ignore it and continue typing. The puppies settle right back down. I’ve conditioned them to react like I do. So then I have to recondition them not to react to the phone like I do. 🙂

Pets can copy other pets too. My standard poodle was a mimic. My Lab would goose us and we’d laugh and pet her and she loved the attention. She didn’t do it all the time, but she was funny. When she died, my standard poodle started doing it. She had learned from Dusty, but didn’t do it until Dusty was gone. So it was a surprise to see her react in such a way later. But she got the same attention and laughter.

I was watching a video where a 3-year-old was using a swear word. The mom is recording it, asking her to repeat it and laughing and then finally said, “You shouldn’t use that word.”

The little girl is getting completely mixed messages. I’d love to see when she tells someone in her pre-school, “I’m going to kick your ass,” and how much the teachers and parents of the other kids who learn this cute little saying are going to think it was cute. 🙂

Kids are like parrots. (Like puppies too, but when it comes to parroting what the adults say, watch out!)

So yep, I definitely know that my reaction to things can help influence my puppies’ reaction to things. Just like when I was raising my two kids.

When my puppies do something good, I always praise them. A lot. You can’t give enough praise. Even though they’re potty trained, when they go to the bathroom outside, I still praise each by name. Tanner still looks at me when I do, sometimes before I praise him. He wants to know he’s doing good. Max most of the time doesn’t now. But today, he did and you could see he was glad he was doing what I wanted him to do. Afterward, he joins me to get some more praise. When I was raising my kids, same thing. I always encouraged them they could do anything they set their minds to do. My dad always said the same thing to us when we were growing up.

What about hugs? We get so busy with our daily lives, sometimes we forget to hug the ones we love. If I hug Tanner, Max is right there for his hug.

I’ll never forget the story of a man whose father was an alcoholic, abusive, and his mother who was an enabler and not there for her kids at all. But he had an aunt who would visit and hug him. That meant the world to him. She gave him unconditional love. He believed if it wasn’t for her, he would never have been able to share that one little gesture of kindness when he was grown.

We are never too old to learn new tricks. To turn over a new leaf. To make the effort to influence someone’s life in a positive way. Even if that someone is a cute little puppy.

Have a super great day!

The Story is What’s Fun…in Photography or Otherwise

We live out in the country, only 7 houses on about 2 miles stretch of road, and all around us are cornfields or wheat fields. Everyone has the usual kind of house, the usual yards, the usual everything…except for one.

Here’s the story. A man owned it and his wife died of cancer. He was grief-stricken and was riding one of his horses one day, was drunk, fell, and got caught somehow and was dragged to his death. It was days before anyone discovered his body.

We were told the grown kids moved in. And then the house was no longer like everyone elses. At first, I didn’t notice. And then one day, I saw trash piled up all over the front porch, the yard, the garage was filled with it. Despite that the house was way back off the road, it had become a hoarder’s house and was truly an eyesore.

Just the other day, I see a trailer filled with trash, and a small stuff mover, not sure what to call it, but it would lift all kinds of stuff, only it was mini-sized, most likely a rental. And I figured that the hoarders had left and someone was trying to clean out the house. Again, I drove by, and the trailer was gone, the occupants gone, the front door wide open, the garage door damaged and cocked, remaining up as much as it could be. And I wondered what happened?

Had they not paid their taxes? Gotten evicted? Someone reported them as a health hazard who lives next door to them? They died? What? And why would the whole place be left open like that? To air it out because they had died inside? I wish I had gotten pictures just for posterity sake, but I didn’t feel safe about doing something like that.

So I wonder what had happened. Some time I’ll ask my next door neighbor. He’s from Texas. He always has a story.

But here are a couple of pictures of my puppies that tell a story.

puppies playing (360x640) Here the puppies are playing. They have no clue I even exist. But as soon as I get my phone ready to take a picture, Max’s attention switches to me. Then Tanner has to see what Momma is up to. And as you can see, Tanner’s tail is a blur as he wags it at light speed. Do you know what happens next?

tanner turning (360x640)

Forget playing with each other, Mommy’s stopped working on her stories and now she’s going to play with us!

Do you ever take pictures that tell a story?

I’m off to work on edits and writing and exercise. Yesterday, not only did I get my word count goal in and editing of 6 chapters of the other book, I walked over 7 miles, AND I managed to take pictures! And that makes it the best of days ever.
