Mine…all Mine

In the wild, the hummingbird is asserting its territorial right to all the zinnia flowers in the garden while the monarch butterfly is trying to ignore the bird. Yesterday, a giant yellow swallowtail was harassed by another hummingbird. Two hummingbirds chase each other off all the time too. And a red-bellied woodpecker is not happy that the cardinal is on HIS feeder, chowing down.

My two-year old granddaughter is the same way. “Mine,” I hear all day. Even when she knows it’s not, if she claims it, she feels she has a right to it, unless Grandma says, “No, that’s Grandma’s.” And even then, if it’s something she really wants, she will insist, “Mine.”

Depending on what it is, Grandma will let her play with it, but it’s still Grandma’s.

During my research, I’ve been reading about people who take metal detectors on “abandoned” property, looking for treasure. The property is owned by someone, maybe an absentee owner who still pays the taxes. So when the trespasser obtains the “treasure,” is it really…his? When someone finds something that’s of a huge value, after he’s bought the property, can he keep it? It seems that yes, sometimes, sometimes, no.

So I changed my story to the owner finding the treasures in her shop as part of her inheritance, rather than buying the property from someone who had inherited the property and sold it off. End of gray area. And it makes it more personal for the character also.

A point in fact: A master’s painting had been stolen from a museum. It had to be returned to the museum. A beautiful antique chest had a secret drawer and the new owner, while refurbishing the furniture, found it full of jewelry and cash. He could have kept it. But he didn’t. He contacted the owner and gave them their treasured possessions. He wanted the beautiful chest. That was the treasure to him.

In another case, a man was digging on his new property, to plant a garden, and discovered a cache of jewelry and other valuable items. It turned out his neighbor had been robbed by the previous owner and the items were buried in the backyard! If he’d tried to sell it, the police might have been alerted that the property had been stolen. And that would certainly be a new twist to a story, wouldn’t it.

So it’s something to think about when you find buried treasure. Hopefully…you won’t find buried bones.

Okay, I’m off to write. I wrote 2,000 words on my day “off.” Isn’t it awful to have a day off from writing, only to spend it babysitting? lol Though we have fun. I hope to take her to Galveston Island to the glass pyramids one day to see the aquarium and tropical pyramid.

Have a super day!!! I’m off to get busy. The days is all MINE.

Research Helps…

to get me on track.

Superfast Wing-Flapping Pipevine Swallowtail on Zinnia

For Red Wolf Christmas, I’ve done tons of research. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in what I’m reading, I can’t stop reading. But guess what? It can pay off in the long run. I think, man, I wasted a whole day writing. Or two whole days writing. And nothing has come of the story. How did that happen? That’s how it happened. But…days later, something finally clicks.

And I’m thinking, wait, that would work in the story! So I was writing, got a 1,000 words early yesterday morning, then finally got another in the afternoon, slowly, but then the story started to gather steam. Three-thousand words. Four thousand. That’s what I was shooting for so that I could have some extra words (2,000 a day for the next couple of days so when I do the edits on the 10th Anniversary of Legend of the White Wolf I won’t be behind). But I was still going. Five thousand. Time for bed. But I printed off some pages to edit in bed and realized as I was editing, I had more to say. And more and more. I have to type up the edits, but it was getting so late, I will write the rest today. And that will give me a start anyway.

So see? All that research paid off. That’s why I absolutely cannot write an outline of my book. It doesn’t work for me. As I was searching for a place to set one of the plats of land, I found this neat online plat and owner finder. Who would have ever known? She had the deeds, but she didn’t know where one of the plats of land was located. And so I was looking for a place to set the plat and the town just hollered to me. Here! This is it! The name? Christmas Valley. It’s a Christmas story. Yes! And there’s a neat history to it. Soooo, more research, more story plot, more words.

Speaking of which, I need to get busy. Have a super fun day!!!

I’m off and running! Again. Yay!

10th Anniversary Legend of the Wolf Came In!

I caught up! I wrote until late last night until I had over 4,000 words, but in the meantime, I received edits on the 10th Anniversary release of Legend of the White Wolf last night. The good thing about the 10th anniversary releases is that I don’t have multiple edits on them. It’s just a case of reading the whole book, and the new novella I wrote at the end of the book, that I need to proof one time only. The bad thing about doing the edits on different books ALL the TIME is that I lose stride on my new book. Just think, it’s like being thrown into a time-travel spin, tossed back a decade earlier to another time and place and wolf pack. I get wrapped up in the old story, and then I’m thrown back into the present. New book, new names, new wolf pack. Where was I again? What was the story about? What was I trying to solve???

Don’t you love the new cover for Legend of the White Wolf? I loved the wolf on the original cover, but the cover didn’t fit any of the series. And the headless guy with only a bellybutton showing? The new cover is much, much better.

Okay, I cancelled on a pool date with the kids. Working on Red Wolf Christmas this morning, hoping to get my word count early, and then maybe I’ll jump on the white wolf edits. But I dread getting wrapped up in that story, and having a time getting started on the other. So maybe I’ll just work on Red Wolf and jump on the other in a couple of days.

Peril on the Sea

Have a great day! Mine better be productive!

Word Count–Fail

I managed to capture a couple of pictures of the hummingbird on zinnia!

But I didn’t make my word count. It’s not like I wasn’t trying. I’m editing, and that means removing as much as adding. Okay, so I repeated that HOW many times? Really???? No wonder my word count was going to town.

And yes, my characters are happy, happy, happy, but I have them smiling and laughing and chuckling HOW many times? Ugh. So there goes some more word count. I have to add NEW stuff. Conflict. Answer questions. Remember to turn on the Christmas music in the antique shop. At 105 degrees heat index, I keep forgetting it’s cold in the story and Christmas!

I want to get my word count for yesterday and today. I really, really do, but…it’s only going to get there if I can come up with some reasons for what’s happening.

I do NOT have writer’s block. I refuse to say it’s writer’s block. I don’t want to use that as a crutch. I just need to think…harder.

Okay, off to think harder and do more edits, but I’m nearly to the end of what I’ve written and then I don’t have anything else to do…but write.

Have a glorious day!!! I’m really, really, really going to get some word count today.

Writing Day…but…

Gulf Fritillary Butterfly on Zinnia

I don’t know what to write!

I love it when I can run with ideas, not so much when I’m not sure where to go with the story. I’m still editing, watching four little cardinal babies eating seeds, two blue jays flying back and forth, a darling little wren hopping about, and a red-bellied woodpecker sliding up a tree.

Ah-ha! You say. I’m distracted. But no…just don’t know where to go with the story. That’s the problem with having to stop and do edits on two other books. I’m over halfway done and it’s the slide down the other side to the end. Woohoo! But I have a lot of mysteries to unravel and so I need to brainstorm a lot.

We’ve got another scorcher. Huge thunderheads last night, but nothing came of it. Unfortunately.

No matter what, I’m GOING to write. I’m determined. And it will be a great day. No baby to distract or other errands to run. Just writing. And birds, galore. Awwww.

Okay, okay, I went out and cut a rosebush way down that was growing out of control, and I took pictures of the birds. Now…it’s time to write.

Have a delightful day.

Signing Books in Katy, Texas

Had a ball with Lola in Katy, Texas! We had lunch at a Texas restaurant that was really good and I signed books at West Oaks Village Barnes and Noble in Katy.

Image may contain: 1 person
Image may contain: 1 person, indoor

And signed books at Books-A-Million in Katy, Texas!

Lola is from Colombia originally, so she was enjoying visiting her friends from there and I was lucky enough to become her friend too!

Baby is here. I only managed to get 1200 words on Red Wolf Christmas yesterday, so I need to finish my word count today. No more pool, so trying to come up with a new fun activity in this heat. The electric company asked us to reduce electricity use again through Thursday. It was supposed to only be 94 today, but it’s showing 98, 108 heat index. But we have a better chance of rain tonight, so fingers crossed.

Have a beautiful day!!!

Off to Meet a Fan Who Has Become a Friend!

Jaguar on the hunt for a shifter mate

I was so busy yesterday, when I wrote my blog, I forgot to add a title. Now, as a writer, I could make up a story. I wanted to lend mystery to the blog. A title-less blog piques interest, right? Or, I was in a rush to get the blog typed up before I had to save the world. Or…take my granddaughter for her 2nd tricycle ride around the block, swim for the last time during the week this season, toss a ball and fetch, do not even ask who was fetching the ball, throwing the ball for the dogs and retrieving, do not even ask who got to throw the ball, coloring–which meant Grandma should butt out because when she doesn’t, she has to draw a million fish on a piece of paper of every crayon color and then again and again. More fish. More fish.

And I managed to get through the edits on the 2nd book. Which means? I need to write on the current book!!! BUT, I’m on a mission this morning. I’m driving an hour south to meet a friend who is a fan from Minnesota, visiting with her friends from Columbia. While I’m down there (Katy, Texas), I hope to go to one of the Barnes and Nobles and a Books-a-Million and sign books. We’ll have lunch, I’m bringing her some books and a couple of other things, and then I’m returning home to write.

Thankfully, I am no word count behind because I’d gotten ahead. See how that works? I still need to get 2,000 today so I’m where I need to be.

Have a great day!!! Mine is busy, busy, busy.

Jaguar Dreaming of Chasing Monkeys in the Trees

Baby is on her way, so have to get ready, but I managed to turn in You Had Me at Wolf and now I’m working on first edits on She-Wolf Ready for Action. I’m through 136 pages of 236. So this book was a little shorter than the other at 250 pages.

Did you know that midnight is still day 1, but some think it’s day 2? So I made it 11 at night. To me, midnight is the end of the day. 1 minute after midnight is the next day. I had to explain how the hero could tell the vehicle windows were bulletproof, name the airport they were going to, and other minor stuff so far. So all good. But it still takes time to read and look for any other mistakes they might have missed.

I want to get this done today, but with my granddaughter here for most of the day, that’s probably not going to happen. We’re going to our last swimming pool day. The kids go back to school on Wednesday, so the kids lifeguarding won’t be available. The pool will be open through Labor Day only on the weekends. But it’s hot here until October. The YMCA they’re planning to build near us won’t be open for another 2 years.

In fact with 111 heat index for the next 2 days, the electric company has asked us to cut back our electric use from 2-6.

Okay, got to run. Have a super fun day!!!

Whittling Away at Deadlines

Do you think they can see us?

I managed to finish the edits on You Had Me at Wolf and turned it in. I pulled up Billionaire She-Wolf Ready for Action to work on next.

I spent some time this morning putting some files into Dropbox because I don’t have access to them if my external hard drives or hard drives die on me. When I changed over to Windows 10, I learned really fast that I’d lost some of my Photoshop Actions. Some sites are great about keeping your purchases available for redownload like Bellevue Avenue and Ashe Designs. And photo purchase sites like Bigstock, Dreamstime, and Depositphotos. But some places don’t. You can look up your purchases like on Pretty Actions and KCC Actions, but if you have a hard drive crash and you haven’t backed the files up someplace that doesn’t crash, you’re out of luck. So I try to purchase mostly from places that allow you to download your files that you purchased off their sites in the event you lose them.

Anyway, it’s just something that I’ve needed to do for a long time!

Okay, back to the book. I’m on page 5 of 227 pages. This book is 23 pages shorter than the other, so I’m off and running!

Have a super wonderful day!!!
