Early Morning Lights

early-morning-1000iso-900-foutain-lights-005We had really dense fog this morning, but it had burned off quite a bit by the time I got myself out the door. I wanted to see if the fountains were lit up in the early morning, but they aren’t. 🙁

So that means I really will have to do this at night. I tried the other night, but between the mosquitoes and then my battery dying, I couldn’t wait for the lights to come on.

early-morning-lights-1000iso-900-006Light fog and lanterns glowing.

I want to learn how to take low light pictures, and these are turning out nicely. Believe me, when I took interesting shots like this in Scotland and Daytona Beach at night, many were awful. Some turned out. But I’m trying to learn how to ensure MORE turn out and not just at the photo god’s whim. 🙂

early-morning-1000iso-blue-sky-fog-lights-003You can see the foggy trees way in the background. I love fog, unless I have to drive in it. So I was disappointed I hadn’t gotten out earlier to take some pictures of it. But I will persist.

And that’s the key to accomplishment. Never give up! Never surrender!

Have a great day!!!

Under 8 Flood Warnings and One Flood Watch

And more rain coming. We have storms through Monday, then tapering off and starting up again on Saturday again. But of course this is all subject to change. Even when it said we had barely any chance of raining, it was pouring.

rain 055 (640x427)Here they said no chance of rain.

rain 056 (640x427)I was running puppies out during these breaks, though at one point we did have a half clear sky. You know, you get complacent. You think it’s poured its guts out and that’s it. No more rain. It’s clearing. That’s what a normal storm would do. But…it’s not true. It’s an illusion. Get complacent and you’ve lost your chance to run out when it’s “dry.”

I ran out to get the mail one time. It’s a couple of blocks away, and it was one of the times I thought it had really ended. Another time, I grabbed my garbage can since they did pick up. Yay! I took the dogs out when the sky looked like this thinking I’d better really walk them and make sure they did their thing.

And then it let loose.

rain 064 (640x427)pouring rain (640x427)rain and tree (640x427)I will give the weather service credit for raising the percent to 45% chance of rain when it was pouring.

Soooooo, I had to get some really important documents signed, notarized, faxed and fedexed. I had gone out the night before, after they sent them to me soooo late and we were in the middle of a terrible storm. Thunder, lightning, deluge of rain. It’s dangerous. It’s not fiction. People most often drown in cars swept away in flood waters. But I had a deadline on the documents. Which is why I was soooo irritated that they hadn’t come in earlier and I could have taken care of the matter then. Even when I had gone out earlier to mail a package, and planned to go to the grocery store, the torrential rains started, and I returned home. Underwriters waited til the title company was closed. I didn’t get them until nearly 6 pm. Six-thirty, the fedex office was going to be closed. They also do faxes and notary. I assumed that since the rains were going to continue ALL NIGHT LONG, it would be better to go out then.

WRONG.

With that much rain in such a short period of time, roads were badly flooded. Lower riding cars than mine were sitting still, in a quandary, not sure what to do. Cars moved around the barrier, which I didn’t mind, but were headed straight for me, and I had to pull over when I could. I ended up doing the same thing when I saw the floodwaters ahead and trucks that ride higher than mine were submersed in water up to their headlights. A low riding truck had put his flashers on and just stopped before he entered the floodwaters.

Turn around, don’t drown has become the motto to warn people how dangerous it is to enter flooded roads. Car engines stall out. The car quickly fills with water. People drown. At Fort Hood, they were still searching for 6 soldiers missing after their truck was swept away in flood waters, 3 drowned, 3 are in stable condition, and 6 still unaccounted for.

I called the title company in the morning to let them know I was going to risk going out to get the documents signed, but that we’d had really bad flooding. Our streets are fine. The road we get on from there was fine. The roads leading to the main one where the businesses are located and where I needed to go, flood. Since I’m new here, I had no idea.

My neighbor had gone to the grocery store in the same plaza. I had heard him leave, so I called his wife to see how the roads were. She told me where he was at. So I tried calling him, but no answer. I let everyone know I was going and would let them know when I got there and got back safely. Then I got in my car and drove the wet streets, took a different road, and it was fine. Now, we’d had rain ALL NIGHT LONG. And that morning when I got up, it had started up again. But we had a two-hour break from the rain before the bank opened. I was there 15 mins before it opened. The post office is behind that, and the grocery store next to it. So I figured maybe I could make it to all three before the deluge began again. It was coming. The sky was turning pitch black. I was running out of time. I needed to get the paperwork done pronto, risk getting some groceries, and return home before the rains started and the road flooded again.

Okay, now this is like a book. Conflict, conflict, conflict. Deadlines. Ticking time-bomb. Threats. Bad stuff coming. Yet the thing I had to do was so important, I had to get it done, pronto. Motivation.

You always wonder why anyone in their right mind would leave their home in the middle of a disaster, unless their home is flooded and they need to leave to get to safety. Most of the people were trying to get home from work. Others, like me, were going somewhere. I had a really important reason. Anything else, and I would have said, no way, Jose, and stayed home. Not worth the risk.

So, I get the documents signed notarized, faxed. Drive to the postal annex and the clouds are looking eerily ominous. Darkening by the second. But no rain. So I run inside, get the paperwork fedexed, and run right next to the grocery store. I can do this. I wanted to get bottled water in case we have problems with our water. I needed potatoes. That’s the Irish in me.

And then it happened. I had just left the grocery store when it began. The deluge. Now…I wasn’t wearing a rain jacket. Dummy me. It was in the car. It was so hot and wasn’t raining, and I just didn’t think of it. I just thought: run in, and get out.

I had bought eggs. I think buying eggs is a mistake for me. I bought some and crushed them (since I don’t buy them but rarely), and then I bought some and we had the power outage and I had to throw them away. So I bought some and the rains were coming down hard, soaking me, lightning striking right overhead, I’m running for the car, pushing the metal basket ahead of me thinking, this is so not good. I’m throwing the 3 bags I picked up as fast as I could into the car. The bottled water is heavy and it took me a couple of minutes longer to throw it in the car. Then I had to run the basket to the basket corral. And then I ran back and got into the car and just sat, soaked, the adrenaline still pumping.

And I thought–oh, no, where did I throw my eggs?

fog 002 (640x427)

I kept thinking the road’s going to flood before I can get home. It was coming down hard. The lightning was cracking right overhead. But 5 cars were trying to back out at once. My windows had fogged up and I couldn’t see. I don’t usually have to use the defroster, so still having a time with figuring it out. I finally leave after 3 of the cars leave, and then I’m on the road, barely able to see because the rain is coming down so hard. The road is beginning to flood. I make it home, drive into my dry garage and just sit there. The adrenaline still pumping.

I unload the groceries, greet the puppies, put away the groceries, no, I didn’t look at the eggs. I couldn’t. Not yet. I let everyone know the documents were off, the title company, my realtor, my kids, my friends to let them know I was home safe and sound.

And then I checked the eggs.

All intact. And I’ll have some for breakfast.

fog 004 (640x427)

That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. Fog this morning. More rain coming. Weatherman says in half an hour, so I took the puppies out one more time. And I’m back to the real world of edits. And I’m not going anywhere.

Happy TGIF!!!

Fog

fog front (640x427)fog side (640x427)fog (640x427)Out of the mist comes…whatever your imagination can dream up.

I went to a St. Patrick’s Day party last night and won a towel with luck of the Irish written all over it. I love it. Since I have several ancestors who came from Ireland, seems appropriate! I couldn’t decide whether to go because I was finishing up edits on Viking to turn in to my critique partner. Then I need to work on more of hers. But since I finished mine, and another chapter of hers, I decided I needed to get out and meet people.

We had fun. Played Bingo and had to ask everyone questions to learn who had done what or had something on the bingo card–like flown in a helicopter, or had more than one cat. NO one had more than one cat. But I still won! And I took some book marks and some Advance Reading Copies (ARCs) of one of my books and autographed a couple, one for a couple’s librarian daughter and another for a romance reader. It was fun for me and fun for them.

I was glad I took off from working and just plain went. Plus, by meeting people, talking to them, you never know when something they might do or say could end up in a story! lol

Have a wonderful day!!

A Moody Picture–Fog at Dawn

Fog at Dawn

Fog at Dawn

What does it make you think of? I think of animals in the woods stirring: a wolf, a fox, coyote, or cougar. A vampire maybe. Or something even more sinister. Hey, my vampires are hot and sexy, unless they’re the bad guy and then they’re deadly.

I took this the other morning when it was just starting to lighten up and saw the soft, orange glow of lantern lights in the fog. Beautiful, mystical, mysterious, a perfectly moody picture.

My Advice

Don’t get sick when you’re trying to move.

Ugh.

Everything that can go wrong will, anyway. So being sick on top of it makes it ten times worse.

Okay, so my son left on Sunday last week, Monday I had to finish packing. Tuesday movers came. We drove out to new home 3 hours away after 3 hours of packing, unloaded 3 hours. And then I collapsed at my daughter and SIL’s house for dinner. I got sick on Saturday before my son left–earache, sore throat. By Monday, I was running a fever and chills, coughing my head off, and that lasted through Wednesday. I had driven back to Crawford to clean the house, and OMG, finish packing. I didn’t realize I’d still left so much behind. I never want to ever move again. Had a horrible fever Wednesday on the 3-hour drive back, freezing to death and had the heater on 80 degrees, but my face was burning up.

Then for the rest of the week and weekend, I’ve been sick, lost my voice at the beginning and still have no voice, still coughing like crazy, and worn out. I’m still unpacking though, and making real progress.

But really, all this needs to be in a story. They gave me the wrong phone number, which I gave out to people who had to call me, like the Realtor for selling my house, my kids, and all they are getting is a disconnected number. Because of a thermal barrier in the roof, my cell phone wasn’t working, so nobody who had that number could call, and I couldn’t call out until the land line was put in. So I called my old number and call forwarding is to some other number, not the one I have or the other they had given me. But some other completely different number. And the woman said they can’t change it. Just tell people my new number. Like I didn’t do that and they changed it on me again?

living room of boxes

living room of boxes

Then I try to get into my collective mailbox. Doesn’t that sound like the Borg??? And I can’t get it open. There are tons of clusters of them. All have a number that is mine. So I’m like so maybe I have the wrong one, but the keys work in one, the box won’t open though. My daughter tried to get it open. I called the sales manager for phone numbers and when she came over with a sheet, she and I went over and she tried to open the mailbox door. So it wasn’t just me.

Tanner and the tape

Tanner and the tape–my daughter and I were unpacking boxes when I noticed Tanner had tape on his hind and front leg and we had to stop for a photo shoot. Tanner doesn’t mind. He’s a big baby.

I spend all day calling the post office. Remember the part about being sick and having no voice? It’s awful. And I certainly didn’t want to have to drive into town to try and find the post office, and then stand in line for half an hour, and then get the run around. So I kept trying to get through to them while I was trying to also find out what I could about the water dept and trash pick up, which I desperately need with all the boxes that need to be recycled. Busy, busy, busy. Call water dept. Then call post office. Busy, busy, busy. Call trash pick up. Then call PO. Busy, busy, busy. Then I call again and I get through…well, it’s ringing, and ringing and ringing. And I’m thinking, OMG, I dialed the wrong number. Look at number. Nope, it’s the PO. Then I get a real person. In my croaky voice, I manage to explain my dilemma.

“Oh, it’s probably sand in the hinges. Use WD-40.”

Huh????? Hey, I moved from the country to the city to learn that my mailbox needs WD-40 to work because of sand? There are no beaches anywhere near here. Maybe an hour and half away??? lol

Okay, so I take my can of WD-40, thankfully, that I’d brought with me, and spray the tar, or sand, out of it. And voila! The box WON’T open.

I call the PO back. Busy, busy, busy.

I normally am a very patient person, but when one thing stacks on top of another, and another, and another and so forth, I still try to remain patient, taking one issue at a time when I can’t resolve another, and I kept just unpacking boxes.

I have to say that even when I was trying to line shelves and this kept happening, I would line a couple of shelves and do something else for a while, because fighting with contact paper is not fun. Funny sometimes–in a hysterical way. It kept grabbing my hair.

Contact Paper, Copyrighted, really?

Contact Paper, Copyrighted, really?

Okay, so after another hour of busy signals at the PO, I get hold of someone and they said to come to the PO. Why???? The key is working. I just can’t get the stupid box open. Go out and fix it. It’s YOUR box. Of course, I didn’t say this. I’m very nice, in a horribly croaky way, and just said, “Okay.”

So….when my daughter came to pick me up for dinner, we went back to the mailbox and while she waited for me to try it again, I yanked it so hard, I nearly fell, and voila, it opened!!!! And all my mail smelled like….guess. Yes! WD-40.

I tried it again today, need to really oil it inside, but no mail, and it did open after a struggle.

The trash guys are supposed to leave off a recycle bin before Thursday, so hope it gets here tomorrow or I’ll just put out the boxes on the curb. And hope they don’t ignore it.

And so that’s my move. My advice is don’t get sick when you move. It’s really the pits. Oh, and I opened the door to try and see if I could get phone reception with my cell phone when I had an incoming call and Max ran out the door. No!

Now, Ms. No Voice is hollering for Max to come back, and he’s chasing after a woman taking a walk, and I’m hollering, and he’s ignoring me, but she’s getting farther away and I’m now running after him and…when  you have a bad cough, running isn’t the greatest thing to do. But he decided she was getting too far away, so he turned to come back home and into my arms, silly dog. Did scare me though.

That’s my move. How has your week been???

Sunrise and Fog

Sunrise and Fog

Even in the city, I’m finding fun shots to take. Oh, and I’m back to edits, this time on Alpha Wolf Need Not Apply. I started them today. After that, I’ve got to get started on the new wolf book.

Have a super great week!!! Mine’s getting better and better!

Fog, Fog, and More Ghostly Fog!

I love fog, though when I was running around with the puppies outside in it, taking pictures, I walked through something….ewwwww, and had white stuff all over my hair. Ewwwwww. Didn’t look like spiderwebs, but…ewwwww. That’s the hazard of taking pictures when it’s still gloomy out….who knows what creepy things lurk in the fog, eh?
