RPG!

Okay, yes, I love Role Playing Games. I’m working on Divinity Original Sin and am like so many others who are annoyed that after building up my characters, I have a no-win scenario with immortal knights. So what is the purpose of equipment, spells, and training if I have to try and sneak past these guys???? When I’m not a rogue and sneaking isn’t part of my whole persona?

But I’m actually talking about a group who role plays my cougar series on Facebook!

And so they’re having a fun fall day festival and I made a couple of pictures for them.

Now it’s time to get back to work. 🙂 Billionaire Wolf Christmas beckons. I reached word count, so now just need to finish the story!

And it’s cool this morning, just like a real fall day!

Have a great one!

Happy 4th!!

We’re having a roast and watching a movie. Wanted to get Independence Day, but it isn’t out yet.

Baby’s First 4th of July

Yesterday disappeared.  Vanished. In a puff of smoke. You see, I was working on re-reading and proofing Cougar Undercover’s print version, and then I got a call for babysitting duty. But before that? I managed to revise, and upload the print version for review again. So it wasn’t a wasted day at all. Waiting for the final proof again.

I would have just killed off the undead today, helped save people, put orcs to rest, you know, all in a day’s work for an adventurer, hero type. But my daughter and SIL and granddaughter are coming over for lunch and a movie, and that will be lots of fun too!

That means I have to get a little ‘venturing in this morning…the challenges are getting harder. I’m warned not to leave the gates. I don’t have enough in my party. Learned that the hard way. Now I have enough in my party, but I don’t have enough experience. But I’m eager to right all the wrongs, sword and wands and bows in hand, and so let the battle begin.

Wait, where’d my healing potions go? My resurrect scrolls? My rejuvenation scrolls?

I’m told, run away, fast. They’re too much for you. But I battle on.

Never give up! Never surrender!

And once again, despite the odds, I win. Until the next battle.

BUT, I save often.

Off to play  before I play some more. I needed the break from writing. Tomorrow, it’s nose to the grindstone.

Have a great day!

Storms and More Storms

The morning after, the night before, and then more.

I love storms, as long as they don’t cause any damage. It settles the dust, feeds the thirsty plants, and cools things down! For a little while, we were even cooler than it was in Minnesota!

I love storms.

Falcon Fae is over halfway done! Yay! I’m not sure when it will be all the way done, but as soon as it is, I’ll be working on Billionaire Wolf Christmas, and then the next Highland book.

For my birthday, my daughter and SIL bought me Divinity Original Sin, so after word count, I played it for a while. Then did some more word count, then played the game again, and more word count. It’s very linear, so once I went down into the crypt, I was stuck. I love games where if you need to build up your strength some more, you can leave, find or pay for more armor, fight, and once you’re stronger, return to deal with the big boys. It wouldn’t let me do that. Ack. So now I’m stuck trying to kill something that can’t be killed.

It’s like creating stories, or doing photography work, or just doing anything, really. If one thing doesn’t work, you have to try something else.

With photography, I had my ISO set on auto. It was great because when I was trying to take pictures and figure out all the settings, I was getting white or black pictures. But with auto ISO, I was getting a lot of great pictures, but some were turning out really grainy. So time to put on my armor, and fight the big boys. And it’s working! Auto ISO forces the picture to brighten, when it’s not that bright out, and you lose the beauty of the low light pictures, such as the photo with the lights reflecting off the wet streets and the glow of the lights against the darkness. And it makes for really high ISO and then that makes for more graininess.

I’m brand new at working with adjusting everything at one time–instead of just aperture and shutter speed–I realize when I have a larger F-stop number, versus a lower number (aperture), I have to adjust shutter speed. Or I end up with black or white pictures. Which means constantly looking to see what I just took to see if I goofed, or got it right. Or in the ballpark. For now, I’m leaving my ISO at 100, to try and reduce the graininess of pictures.

But if I want to take pictures of fast moving birds, like hummingbirds, then the ISO has to go up! I love this article by Thomas Stirr. Now if I could take handheld photographs of hummingbirds that looked this outstanding? I would be thrilled.

Maybe one of these days I’ll defeat the unbeatable, and move onto the next challenge!

Have a great and successful day!

Saving, Restoring, and Downright Cheatin’

sparrows on new feader 004 (427x640)

First, my birds. 🙂

I was having a blast with Cougar’s Mate, just going along nice and linear like, which means from Point A to Point B to Point C, and then something happened. I had the brilliant scene play out in my mind that was the whole ending. Or not.  I thought it was the black moment, and I thought it was the ending, but the characters did the unexpected, again.  What that means is that some of the other stuff I wrote that I had already cut out–the 10,000 words could be used, so I inserted them back in. But they have to all be reworked because they don’t fit now with the new beginning and the almost ending.

So what happens? Can’t sleep. I had another scene, so wrote it, but I wanted to write another scene. Too tired. Hoped I’d remember it in the morning. 1:00 and I’m thinking about the scene I didn’t write. It doesn’t pay to put the muse on hold. So I wrote it, turned out the lights, couldn’t quit thinking and had another scene come to me. *sigh*

The first 6 chapters are great, linear, from the first point through the end point. The end chapters are too, well, the almost end. And then, I have to rework and add a lot in between. Does this mean filler? Never. Conflict, mystery, romance, adventure. If it doesn’t add to the solving of the mystery, to reaching the ultimate goal and a HEA, it doesn’t belong.

When I was playing RPGs, Role Playing Games, I saved a lot. I do with my writing too. But if you don’t save an earlier version, that you might decide you like better, just like in a game, you might find you saved too late. Believe me. I’ve been in really tight spots of no return in a game, and the last saved game means no going back–or to a much, much earlier place where I didn’t have half the wonderful armor or weapons or magic skills, hadn’t solved a lot of the mysteries, and have to fight all the bad guys again.

My dad used to say he really hated to have to go backward when he was trying to move forward, like heading out, forgetting something crucial, and having to return for it. Or getting lost and traveling way out of his way.  That’s how I felt about having to go to an earlier game and start “all over”. I didn’t enjoy fighting all the monsters again, or finding all those treasures again. I wanted to find new monsters, new mysteries to solve, new treasures.

If you play a lot of these games, you’ll be driving through town and think:  I wish I could have restored to an earlier play. 🙂 If I’d only known the mess I was going to get into driving this route, I could just take a different one. If only I could click a button and I would be back at that point and just take the other road. I think there’s a story in that. 🙂

Or, saving. Wouldn’t it be neat if, like with that thought I had last night, just save it in a game folder? And then open it up in the morning, at a decent hour and it’s all there???

Okay, so saving and restoring are great game play techniques. If I didn’t have them, I’d be dead. Game over. Forever and ever and ever.

Now then there’s cheatin’. I’m going to tell you that if I try and try and try to solve a puzzle and I can’t go anywhere else to continue the game play because that’s a main quest and I have to do it, I cheat. I’m not saying I’m proud of it. But sometimes, I have to have a clue or three to get me on my way. There’s something called an Easter Egg that programmers add to games also, and so you can get a cheat item, unlimited money, magic potion, whatever.  I usually don’t do this. But I was playing Dungeon Siege and it was so glitchy, I kept having trouble. You can’t kill of the monsters and have fun exploring the area. You have to keep killing them. I love the mystery, finding cool stuff, solving puzzles. Killing over and over and over is not my thing. It wears me out. 🙂

So I got a cheat code that made me really powerful. And then I got to the place where I had to fight several wizards and they killed me! Over and over again. I was no longer all powerful.

You see, sometimes you can’t just save and restore and downright cheat. You’ve just got to put your nose to the grindstone, and… work. 🙂

And that’s what I’m going to do.

Have a super great Sunday!!
