Playing around with Photoshop & Bound by Danger

macro-shot-of-flowers-and-sabine-and-zoerro-wolvesI learned how to create a signature as a brush. And how to add highlights to the letters, though I hadn’t done anything with this one and it just popped up that way. lol

Do you ever do things you’re clueless about and you have no idea why?

Anyway, these are pictures I took of a macro shot of crepe myrtle, and a regular shot of Zoerro, and Sabine in a compilation. She died, which was so sad, but they had become great friends.

Playing around with covers some more.

bound-by-danger-cover-new-water-900I loved this photographer’s shot, but the water was gray, foaming, waves, but no matter how I tried to colorize it, it wasn’t working. So I added water from two different photos, and I liked it much better.

In this story, I used the location of where I’d worked on active duty at Fort Hood. Two news stories had caught my attention at the time. One of the majors I worked with was being framed for selling arms to the enemy during the war, only he was just the general’s aide, and the general was the one responsible. So the Austin newspaper was following the story to ensure that he didn’t get crucified because he was in the wrong position at the time–and the little guy. Another story had just occurred too, and this one was about an unscrupulous literary agent–a scammer, who was asking for money from eager authors, who believed they would finally publish their baby through him. He was up on charges all over the place, changing his name, and fled to Canada, and had made over a million dollars in the fraudulent scam. He didn’t stop either. But he’d take everyone’s money, pretend he was busy reading their manuscripts, and they’d never hear from him again.

So I combined the two stories and created a fantasy, of sorts. She has future visions, and he’s a federal agent looking into her brother who worked for the literary agent. But they’re on a collision course with disaster as things heat up between them and people want her dead because she just knows way too much…

I actually started these characters in Deidre’s Secret when she was a teen in a YA story. I fell in love with the sister and brother and so then they had their grown-up story.

deidres-secret-1850

Bound by Danger

Army officer Deidre Roux has hidden her psychic abilities until now. But ominous visions plague her and between the martial arts tactics her twin brother taught her and the hand-to-hand combat she learned in the Army—she’s realizing just how important these skills are for her well-being.
When a reporter moves in next door, she’s not sure just what to think. Dave Carter owns a gun—it is Texas—and comes to her rescue when her brother suddenly drops into her life again. From there it’s the normal stuff that women and men tend to do when they’re getting to know each other—boating, swimming, dancing—except for one thing…she’s trying to keep her secret under wraps at all costs, which is difficult to do when she’s under surveillance by the FBI, and people keep wanting her dead.
Could a reporter, who’s not really a reporter, prove he might just have what it takes to keep her safe–for the long run?

Okay, 2,000 more words to go on White Wolf Christmas!! Have a super day!!

Romantic Suspense–with a Little Paranormal…DEADLY FORTUNES

Fortune teller looking very thoughtful staring into her crystal ball

So before I began writing about vampires and werewolves and cougar and jaguar shifters, I was writing some romantic suspense with some paranormal elements. To me, it’s always more fun, though a couple slipped in without any paranormal elements, and I love them too. In this one, I’ve always been fascinated with the idea that a fortune teller is for real. Now how would that go over with some rich guy who doesn’t believe she sees he’s in danger?  And only think she’s a gold digger. And yet, he’s stuck on her, first to prove she’s a fraud, and mostly because he can’t get her out of his mind.

I’ve never had my fortune read, but my mom did in San Francisco, and the woman told her she would marry a Chinese man. Now, that never happened, so we know that are some are frauds. lol

Anyway, so that’s the story! 🙂 <3

A rags to riches fairy tale where a fortune telling can spell doom…

Katrina Landry is not your everyday fortune teller. She’s a substitute teacher who longs to work at it full time. But when she substitutes for her cousin at her fortune telling booth at the fair, Katrina meets a man who she foresees is in danger. So what’s a girl supposed to do but sneak into a by-invitation only dance and save the TX Stud’s life?

Prescott Worthington hasn’t had this much fun in a long time when on a whim he takes his girlfriend to the fair where Sascha the Sensation predicts he will have twins, and that his girlfriend will find someone else. But when the woman shows up at the dance with some nonsense about saving his life, he’s totally irritated and totally bewitched. Maybe she can bring a little magic into his life.

She insists someone’s trying to kill him and he thinks it’s her boyfriend…only Prescott has no intention of giving up the woman who he’s sure needs his protection. And a whole lot more.

Cougars Mate FINAL 11292013 copy

Cougar’s Mate: Instinct told her to run…

Shannon Rafferty learns that hanging out with the bad boys could be a dangerous business, but hooking up with a cop is even worse. Now she’s on the run, trying to avoid being murdered by his cougar shifter brothers and uncle. If that isn’t bad enough, a deputy sheriff hunts her down while she’s running as a cougar and trying to survive in the Colorado wilderness. He vows to protect her no matter what she’s done. With three dead boyfriends to her name, she’s sure she will be the death of Chase Buchanan before either of them can prevent it. No matter how much she knows she has to run again, he soon holds her heart hostage. But will that be enough to keep them both alive?

Chase Buchanan—as wilderness cabin resort owner, former US Army Special Forces, and part time deputy of the small town of Yuma, Colorado that boasts a love of cougars—is tasked to track down a cougar reported to be hunting human prey. Chase soon learns she’s a shifter, not a full-time cougar, and she’s on the run. When he takes her in, he vows to protect her. After losing his wife and baby to the human kind of predator years earlier, he’s not letting Shannon’s hunters kill her, too. But how is he going to hold onto the wild-cat woman, who is unpredictable at every turn, without losing his heart to her, and then losing her as well?

Photographing People

jennifer-head-turned-sunrays-pink-flowers-800x533jennifer-pics-900-petting-air-032

Or at least my daughter. So in the first one, I was using a 300mm, and in the 2nd one, a prime 85mm. The 2nd one is much clearer on my 2nd photo shoot of her and it still has a lot of the light from the sun bouncing off her hair. I’m going to turn this into a more fantasy setting so I had her petting the air. 🙂  Years ago, we were at the Renaissance fair and I took a bunch of pictures of her and used one for the cover of Shadow Elf. Everyone loved the picture, though it was really awful as far as quality for a cover. So I’m hoping to use her photo in a new book that I’m writing in the series. 🙂  She’s pregnant, so I’m also photographing the progress of her baby bump for her, lol, and so I want to get as many pictures of her that don’t show the baby bump for the teen books. lol

Though I probably will do one of her as a pregnant fairy later. 🙂 Not for a teen book, just for fun.

So one of the things I failed to do and am FINALLY getting around to doing, and it’s taken me 3 days to do is add links to sales sites on my book list in the books to make it easier for anyone interested in any of the other books to buy. I’m STILL working on it. It will probably take a couple of more days.  I love the Vellum program, which can only be used on MAC, but I needed that to upload to Apple, soooo, with that, I need to put my doc in the Vellum program, then I had to make a template of book links, then had to put that in every book I already have on Vellum, which means on iBooks (I still haven’t uploaded some to iBooks)…and that was a major job. Some was because, horrors, I didn’t have all my links for the different sales sites for each book (have over 60), on their book pages. And, some of the links I did have were broken, for some reason. And then because I use my PC, not my MAC for all my writing, I didn’t have updated covers uploaded to my Vellum for 3 of the books, so need to go back and do that.

Then I get a message from one of the sales sites this morning that my keywords don’t reflect the title. Well, that’s not true at all! And it flew before. Soooo, I took out one and replaced it with another. We’ll see what happens next. But I have to jump back and forth between computers to fix all this stuff. Will it help sales? I hope so. If not, at least I feel I’ve done what I’ve needed to in forever. And I’m glad I updated my website at the same time. Now, the reason I don’t have all the links posted to sales sites is because when I have a new book out, some sites are slower to upload than others. And I forget to go back in and add the ones that aren’t listing the title until later. 🙂 But also, I had some books coming, that are out now, some that I wasn’t able to write because of other deadlines, and so needed to fix those too. So it’s all good.

Now, I keep telling myself that when I have a new book out and new links, it’s going to be less of a rigmarole to update, because I’ll only be adding one title and its new links. But I will sill have to update ALL the books, and reupload All the books. There’s no easy way around it.

That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

In the meantime, also, I’m critiquing my friend’s book, finishing White Wolf Christmas. I’m finished with the story, but still need 5,000 word count, and I’m going through from beginning to end to smooth out scenes and make corrections because as I’m writing, I change my mind about things and then some of the earlier stuff doesn’t mesh. Oh, and Find and Replace can be your friend or your enemy. Did you know that if you replace Mark with Jim, it can create all kinds of havoc? Yep. As in rejimable. Remarkable? And rejim. Remark. And highmarking, highjiming. Yep.

Highmarking refers to snowmobilers racing up a hill to see who can create the highest mark in the snow before they can’t go any higher and then the next guy tries to beat it.  So I have a fun, very important scene, about that in White Wolf Christmas.

I’m also a featured guest today, talking about Billionaire in Wolf’s Clothing, and creating bears, because it’s a book and craft’s blog. I met Tamye at the Coastal Magic Conference this year and look forward to seeing her again next year! She’s done a BEAUTIFUL job putting the post together. It might be a little while before it appears…but the link will work in a bit. She thought we should get together around 10 for our tea/coffee time. She’s the sweetest!

Creating Story Art with Photos

seal-momma-baby-another-sunrays-eilean-donan-combine-900This is a composite of three photos that I’d taken–one of the seals in San Diego basking on the shore, one of the sun flare across a Scottish glen, and one of Eilean Donan in Scotland. I love seeing the way some can take photos and compose them into real story art. So that’s something else I’m trying to learn to do. 🙂

The sky grew darker as Shannon stared out the entrance of the cave, watching for any sign of danger. She hadn’t seen any hikers or hunters. Yes, she’d noticed the tents at the campsite near the lake. She’d even considered that after the men retired to their tents and their sleeping bags tonight, she could go there and catch a fish in the lake. The campers wouldn’t be able to see her at night. Then she’d have it made. But once she’d rescued the boy, she nixed that idea. If they somehow did catch sight of her, they would know she was a dangerous predator, looking for a new source of meat. Maybe even them.

It didn’t matter. She couldn’t have let the boy drown. Several times she’d woken during the day, thinking she’d heard a child screaming. Forget his having nightmares about last night. She was having them!

The moonlight softly illuminated the golden aspen, the leaves fluttering in the chilly breeze. She closed her eyes briefly.

She had enough nightmares to deal with without piling up any more on top of those. She had intended to stay here in the area because she hadn’t located any sign of wolves or black bears. If she ran into a black bear or wolf pack? Both predators would push a cougar out of their territory or kill him.

She hadn’t smelled either in the vicinity. Only cougars. And a lot of them. Cougars didn’t run in packs. Which was why a cougar would be at risk when encountering a wolf pack. A lone wolf was no match for a cougar’s claws and teeth. But with a lot of cougars congregating together? It had to mean they were shifters. And they kept the other big predators away. So she thought she had half a chance at surviving here. Bears and wolves would find some other place to hunt.

She’d never smelled so many cougars in one area before though and it did worry her that they’d locate her and then what? Interrogate her. Why would a female shifter run in the wilderness by herself with no camping equipment anywhere?

Even if they didn’t learn who she was, she couldn’t go to any of them and ask for help. Not in her cougar form. Without clothes, she couldn’t just walk into town naked, either. Besides, she was a wanted woman, and she was certain no one would believe her word over the rest of her boyfriend’s family. Not when Hennessey Kelly was a cop, which meant she was on her own.

The crimson sky turned to blackness and all that was left was the moon and a sprinkling of stars. Shannon rose, listened, her ears perked, trying to hear anything other than the sound of the breeze rustling the leaves down below. She heard no sign of humans and leapt down to the next ledge. Thankfully, her kind could leap eighteen feet in one bound, up or down. And horizontally? As much as forty to forty-five feet. At a sprint, she could run full out for short distances at forty to fifty miles per hour, which was what she had planned—to race back to the lake, despite discounting the idea earlier, and then take however long it took to catch her meal.

She’d made it to the second rock ledge when she saw something move in her peripheral vision. A man standing on a lower ledge off to her right, his hands reaching for his rifle, slung over his shoulder. How could he see her at dusk?

He moved quickly as if he was a military man and not just a hunter. Before she could leap at him, he fired a shot, the sound ringing in her ears, echoing across the rocks. The last thought she had as she collapsed on the rock ledge above him was that she had lived a month longer than she thought she would have ever managed.

As soon as the she-cat landed on the stone, asleep, hopefully, Chase struggled to reach the ledge she was lying on. If he’d been in his cougar form, no problem. But to reach her as a human, he could have used climbing gear.

He hated having to shoot her as much as it felt as if he were shooting one of his own people. But he wasn’t. He had just knocked out a wild cat protecting herself that might have killed him, based on survival instinct alone.

He grasped the top of the ledge, got a couple of toe holds with his boots, and pulled himself halfway up the rock face when he saw a naked woman lying on the granite, her back to him, and his tranquilizer dart in her shoulder. Shocking him to the core, he gaped at her. Holy shit.

Silky, dark brown, nearly black hair draped around her neck, the rest of her tan skin covered in chill bumps from the cold. Before he could climb on top of the ledge to reach her, and while he was still processing that the cougar was a shifter, and not a full she-cat, his cell phone rang.

His nerves, normally made of steel, shattered into a million fragments. He climbed up onto the ledge and hurried to pull the dart out of the woman’s shoulder, then jerked off his parka. After rushing to lay it on the ledge and then lifting her onto it, he pulled her arms into the sleeves and then buttoned it up to her throat. The parka only came to high thigh, but he couldn’t do anything about that for now. He glanced up at the cave above them, assuming she must have been staying there.

His breath coming out in a misty fog and his heart pounding hard, he made the rest of the arduous climb to reach the cave to grab her clothes and ID. He stalked inside, using his cell phone to provide some extra light as pitch black as it was in there, and found—nothing. Not a backpack, not a stitch of clothes. Certainly no ID. And she wasn’t anyone he remembered ever having seen before.

He hadn’t thought he could be shocked any further.

“God, what a nightmare.” He had to get the nearly naked, sleeping woman down the cliffs somehow. And he had to keep her warm until then.

He called Dan to give him an update. “Dan.”

“Yeah, I tried calling you to let you know the cougar headed in this direction at some point, but I haven’t found any sign of him. Have you discovered anything your way?”

“Yeah. I sure as hell did. I’m in one hell of a mess. I need your help… pronto.”

The Bicycle in the Woods

bicycle-in-cameron-park-in-the-woods-recoveredWe were taking this walk in the park, a bunch from the library where I worked, and came across the bicycle. There was no sign of anybody. I took the shot, wondering whatever had become of the rider. Well, the shift overcame him. 🙂 He might have been lounging in the tree above us. A jaguar? A cougar? Maybe a wolf hidden in the woods? I never thought to look up!

With the shadows and filtered light in the semi-dark woods and all the vegetation, the bike was hard to see. And seemed so discordant with the wildness of the park to be there all by itself. Not in a way that said its owner had met a tragic end, just sitting there, waiting for its rider to return and take it home. But for the moment, it was enjoying sitting in the park, listening to the birds and watching the butterflies flutter by, and amused at all the hikers taking this path, even me, stopping to take its picture, instead of sitting in the dusty garage watching a black widow weave a web nearby.

I had “lost” this picture and forgotten all about it. But when I found the photo, it reminded me of that day in the park with my friends, the bicycle, and the absent rider, while the bicycle waited so patiently for its rider to return.

A Short Story: Are You Ready for the Hobgoblins?

red-hour-glass-black-widow-900-closeup-012Some stories are for fun! This black widow is in my garage and still……..ALIVE. Perfect for Halloween. But I don’t want her there!

Are You Ready for the Hobgoblins?

Copyrighted by Terry Spear

What if your best friend says she wants you to come over and have fun at her special Halloween party, costumes not necessary? But she’s always been a stickler for them. “If you’re going to party, do it right!” So it’s got you to thinking, what’s she up to this time?
You’re ultra-curious and you’ve been asking her all month long—what’s so special about this party? Who’s going to be there? You’re thinking old boyfriends, and she’s got some idea she wants you to get back together with one of them. You really haven’t a clue. You don’t want to go unprepared.
Ever have a fear of the unknown? Sure, fear of the known can be pretty hard to overcome, too. But let your imagination run wild when you haven’t any idea what’s going to happen, and it can be seriously unfun.
Of course, you could chicken out. But you never chicken out and you’re not about to start now.
So feeling a little strange not to be wearing a costume, you arrive in jeans and a T-shirt featuring an old-time looking jack-o-lantern. You had to wear something! And you feel you’ve entered the Twilight Zone as soon as you walk in the door.
Everyone turns to look at you, men and women dressed in jeans and cotton shirts, no sign of anything Halloween-like, but it’s a veritable jungle in here. Jungle drums and the sounds of the rain forest are playing overhead.
The heater is on full blast. Humidifiers are pouring out wet, soggy air. Real plants fill the whole place, every table space, every wall drips with vines, a soft mist is sprayed through the air, making your hair drip and your mouth gape.
“Can she climb a tree?” a man asked, clutching a drink in his hand.
“Does she like to swim?” Another raked her with his golden gaze.
“Does she purr?” a woman asked, purring the words.
“Does she like to bite?” The first man set his empty glass down among a hodgepodge of greenery and took a step toward her.
Vampires, you’re thinking. Although you can’t imagine how your friend got mixed up with those.
Then a sleek golden cat wearing black ringed rosettes moves into view, a jaguar with green eyes studying you, her mouth opening to show a lot of very sharp, wicked teeth. It can’t be her. Your best friend.
You have to get out of here, now! Why didn’t she tell you?
Why didn’t you tell her?
Before anyone moves any closer, you lift your chin and howl.
Hisses fill the air as if the room is full of vampires or riled up snakes or… jaguar shifters.
You back up toward the door and escape. You hear the howls in the distance, but you don’t want your new wolf pack mates to fight these cats.
You give one last longing look at your friend standing in the doorway of her house, looking confused. And you wished you’d turned her first.
Then you’re off, racing toward your pack.
Maybe, next year you’ll play it safe and just wear a costume.
What do you think? Ready to play with the big boys with teeth?
