The Devil’s Messenger–Part 1, A True WWII Story

The Devil’s Messenger

by Terry Spear

Sixteen-year-old, airman Staff Sergeant Walter Wilde studied the brown paper-wrapped parcel from his mother as he sat stiff-legged on his bunk bed in Snetterton Heath, England while B-25s roared overhead. The barracks were nothing more than Quonset huts–buildings made of corrugated sheet metal with no insulation or covering on the inside. A small coal stove in the middle of the building crackled away as it provided the only heat.

“Hey, Wilde,” another staff sergeant said, as he punched him in the shoulder. “You’ve been eyeballing that package from home for over an hour already. Let us have a look-see.”

Walter touched the string criss-crossed binding, the package dated, October 4, 1943, from his hometown of Seattle, Washington. The big man stepped over to the bunk and peered down at the mail. “Come on, Wilde. Everyone else has shown off their packages from home. Maybe it’s some homemade cookies you can share with the rest of your good buddies here.”

“Yeah, besides,” another crewman said, “if you don’t hurry, we may be called up for another mission before you get the chance.” He handed Walter a knife.

“By the time he ever opens the package,” the first said, “the war will have ended.”

Taking a deep breath, Walter sliced the knife through the string, hoping his mother wouldn’t have sent something embarrassing. Not once had she sent him anything the whole time he’d been in combat. He ripped the package open. Inside, he found an Ouija board. He shook his head, relieved it wasn’t something really awful. “Nothing good to eat.”

One of the crewman grabbed up the Ouija board and smiled. “Come on, let’s play a game.”

Another held up the cards he was playing at a game of poker. “Play a man’s game. That’s kid’s stuff.”

Another shook his head. “This isn’t kid’s stuff –it’s not something you should mess with. Get rid of the thing, Wilde. It’s the devil’s messenger.” His voice was shadowed with concern.

“Don’t listen to him. He’s just superstitious!” The airman laid the board on a table, then pulled up a chair. Walter sat on the edge of his bed across from him to play the game.

After a moment, the board seemed to move on its own. “You did that,” he accused. Walter wasn’t superstitious normally, but the crewman’s words had his skin crawling.

“No,” the airman responded as he held his hands up in the air. “Scout’s honor.”

“You were never a Scout!” one of the poker players retorted as he threw a pillow at him. The pillow slid across the table, knocking the Ouija board to the floor. Walter looked down at the board and could have sworn he saw it move again.

***
This is based on a true story.

My dad had numerous near-death experiences from the time he was three-year’s old. So by the time he was sixteen, signing up to fight the war illegally, he was a pro at living through whatever danger life threw at him. We swore a Guardian Angel watched over him until his death at 74 years of age.

I don’t believe the Ouija board is the devil’s messenger, and yet…who really knows.
What do you think about Ouija boards? Have you played one? Anything spooky ever happen?
Part 2 tomorrow…

Macro Crepe Myrtles

They were white…or were they?

White with a hint of pink crepe myrtle flowers

White with a hint of pink crepe myrtle flowers

I have no white crepe myrtles in my yard, and neither doe anyone else close by, and yet one day, a volunteer began to emerge. This is the first time I’ve seen it covered in flowers. 🙂 <3

They looked ice white but then I thought they looked like they had a tinge of pink.

They looked ice white but then I thought they looked like they had a tinge of pink.

The wind was NOT cooperating. Have you ever had that problem? The model stays still for you, but the wind makes it dance? Crepe Myrtles are just like they sound, like crepe paper, fluttery and crinkly. So even when I held the branch and took a shot, the petals themselves were fluttering in the breeze.

I love the flowering parts of the crepe myrtles. These are on a red one.

Do you see what I see?

Do you see what I see?

Is that a white flower about to appear on a red crepe myrtle? I will check it out today and see if it has emerged. There are no others on any of the red crepe myrtles. This happens once in a blue moon. 🙂

Okay, working on a Steampunk Bear for a boy and on 3 different rainbow bears, and working on Jaguar Christmas, and am behind….but lots of other stuff going on. Hope to concentrate on it today. 🙂 I usually have lots of action in my writing. It seems silly to drive all over the country in search of evidence when they can just make a phone call about the situation. On the other hand, just making phone calls doesn’t get the characters into what would feel like real-life action.

I remind myself, the beginning is never the beginning. That I have to work through the characters a bit before I can “see” what’s going to happen.

Soooo, I write, and then I rewrite to get it right. Right?

Have a super wonderful day! It’s hot in Texas. Which means I have to work even harder to envision cool in Texas in Jaguar Christmas. 🙂

It Rained!

Love a Shifter

Love a shifter and they’ll love you right back!

We had no hope for rain ever, in a million years. I know. Because I looked at the weather report. And it said so. No rain forever and ever and ever. And it rained!!!

So I’m happy.

Have a great Monday!

Swarm of the Dragonflies

Swarm of the Dragonflies

Swarm of the Dragonflies–like miniature helicopters in flight

With the rain we had yesterday for a good part of the morning and then it stayed cloudy all day, the dragonflies were in a frenzy last night. It was hard to capture them, but you can see a ton of black dots on the clouds, all dragonflies. I couldn’t see them on the camera when I was trying to get a shot, only with the naked eye.

If you click on the image and then click again, you can get the larger picture. How many do you count? That was just a small amount of them. I cropped it because the picture would take too much time to load.

Have a great day! Don’t you think that would make for a cool book title, by the way?

Vulture with a Mohawk

I had some fun with this. Used fisheye and lomo on it.

Taken at our local zoo. I know they’re opportunistic feeders, but they have them all over the place there and it’s kind of Edgar Allan Poe, you know?

Beware.

This was a fun shot that showed what happens when you go out to dinner with family…. Who would have ever thought that meals out would end up in this form of socialization?

Truly, though, they’ve gotten better about it so that when we go out to eat, we talk. lol Like in ye old days. 🙂

Sometimes the Amateur Photographer Looks Like a Clown but Gets it Right, Anyway…

Yellow, Yellow Butterfly!

Yellow, Yellow Butterfly!

I took the puppies out and naturally, I see a beautiful butterfly and I’m sure it’s a monarch, but it disappears. It’s really rare to see one, so I was disappointed I’d missed it.

So when I’m trying to corral the puppies to bring them inside, I see this beautiful gorgeous yellow, yellow butterfly. I’ve never seen her before in my gardens. So I rush inside, get my camera with the macro lenses, and the tripod, and chase the butterfly all over the garden.

Poor butterfly.

But I’m determined to get a shot. I never managed to use the tripod. The butterfly moved every time. Sooooo, I held the camera on the tripod and took the hand-held shots. I couldn’t get any closer than this either.

And….wouldn’t you know, there were crunchy leaves all over the patio, so I’m trying to watch the butterfly and miss crunching on the leaves, which didn’t matter anyway. I’m sure the poor thing saw this hulking human predator anyway, so it really didn’t matter.

Even so, I got her. Isn’t she just beautiful? My Facebook fans tell me she’s a tiger swallowtail!

She made my day!

Have a great day!

Photographing Subjects–I Can’t Decide

Some photographers are really excellent landscape photographers, or they do fantastic portraits, or animal shots, or macro shots, or…well, the list goes on. And then there’s me.

Like reading, like writing, like photographing, I love everything. I love to see the beauty in all photos no matter what subject a particular photographer loves to create. I can’t draw worth a darn, but when I played around with it, landscapes were my thing.

Crathes Castle Trees like soldiers standing tall and straight--shot from Crathes Castle upper floor window

Crathes Castle Trees like soldiers standing tall and straight–a narrow blanket of golden leaves leaving a marching trail beneath them–shot from Crathes Castle upper floor window

But in photography, I love it all. The same with writing. I love to create Highland medieval romances, and English medieval romances, and wolf, jaguar, cougar and bear shifter romances, and psychic romances, and vampire romances, and romantic suspenses, as long as they have romance, mystery, intrigue, adventure, humor, and most have a body count.

My editor on my wolf stories said of my second book, “Your body count has gone way up.” That was my most successful book for a long time. lol

In my third book, I tried to be nice. Fewer dead bodies. Wasn’t half as successful. 🙂

But I love doing a mix of things. I couldn’t imagine not trying to capture a bee on a flower or a water droplet on a rose petal or a line of thunderclouds or a cougar close up or the vines growing on a castle wall or the North Sea pounding at the shore line beneath a Scottish castle or fall colors anywhere (because we don’t have much of it here), if I have the chance to do it.

I love to capture life as I see it both in my writing and my photography, and so I guess that makes me eclectic. Maybe eccentric. But happy too.

Ancient stone wall, black and white cows, fall colors

Ancient stone wall, black and white cows, fall colors–Scotland

Highland cow river (640x480)

Shaggy Highland Cow and Fall colors reflected in the glassy river

This scene with the black and white cows could be from anywhere, except for the ancient stone wall in front. Can you imagine the Highlanders who built this wall so many eons ago? Why they built it in the first place? What they were protecting? I loved the cows, the hint of color in the foggy forest, but the ancient wall covered with moss and lichen the most. I love history and for writing and reading, I love it the most also.

I started writing jaguar Christmas, and I have the first 1,000 words! 79,000 to go! 🙂

Have a great day!
