Blue Jay and Bubbly Bokeh

The birds love the water fountain. So do the squirrels. I do too. There’s something relaxing about listening to a fountain bubbling away. Or a stream too.

I’m 100 pages into proofing Red Wolf, 145 pages to go!

We might get rain next week. I sure hope so. I was out pulling weeds this morning in the semi-dark to beat the heat, but it would help to have wetter ground to pull weeds. Do you ever notice that weeds thrive no matter if they have water or not? Maybe I should just grow weeds. They’re happy!

Have a lovely day!

Natural Bokeh in Photos

I had to practice at this, getting up close to the object and looking for interesting light behind it.

Here’s a great link to an article about how to do it.

https://www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/tips-and-techniques/bokeh-for-beginners.html

Sometimes it’s impossible to get any distance between your subject and the background, or you can’t get too close or you’ll chase your subject off. But if you have still life to photograph, or subjects that are prone to hold put even if you get closer to them, you can get some interesting effects. I love the bubbled bokeh, but creamy will do too. In the yellow and white mother’s day flowers, the bubbles are yellow esperanza in sunlight, and the flowers were on the patio. So when I went to shoot them, in the shade, the esperanza across the lawn several feet away gave a spectacular yellow bubble effect.

With the purple flowers, the bubbly effect is a waterfall behind them. The fall leaves–light filtering through the trees. The caterpillar–light reflecting off plants, and the wild grasses–that was harder since they were mostly on top of each other. I had to find some that I could get close to and the background faded away.

I try to get the sharpness of the subject, not really paying attention to the background as much, but I joined a group on Facebook to share silhouettes, bokeh, and reflections. I love to do the latter two, so it’s made me make more of an effort to try and find a fun light source behind my subject for natural bokeh when I can.

Ran to the grocery store this morning–empty, yes! Of people that is. I went at 8 am, but learned they are now open at 7 am, so will be going earlier next time. I haven’t gone in 3 weeks, most food in, lots of beef wasn’t available. But I really needed fresh veggies and fruits, and shoot, forgot tilapia and garbage bags. Always something.

And I took a walk first thing before it gets hot.

I’m off to write. Got my 80K in yesterday!!! Yay! So now I need to wrap this puppy up.

Have a great and safe day!!!

I Was in Dragonfly Heaven

It’s not just about taking a sharp picture of the fairy creatures as much as I can, but also, capturing interesting backdrops when I can. I loved the pastel bokeh one at the bottom, and the light flare that looks like a rainbow with the red-veined skimmer. The orange one is a flame skinner, and the one with the white tail is the common whitetail. The others, I’m not sure.

I went out to water the parched plants when dragonflies of all kinds took to the wing, and then I skipped the watering, sorry plants, and ran into grab my camera. I LOVE dragonflies.

Okay, corgis are going home tonight and in the meantime, I have to write! I did get 1,000 over word count yesterday! Have a dragonfly fantasy kind of day!

Red Roses and Christmas Lights!

I was trying to get more of a blurred bokeh effect, but to do that, I would have needed to bring the roses farther away from the tree. And then there would be too much other stuff, walls, particularly, because my tree is narrow and you’d lose the light effect. 🙂

So I used Photoshop to blur the background a bit. I used Gaussian Blur, that way the background is softer and the flowers more noticeable.

I’ve been re-reading and revising older stories and partial stories until I can figure out a plot for the next white bear story!

Have a great one!

Lights, Camera, Action!

Diligently working on Bounty (64,000 to go), but when I saw these lights on the floor, I thought, bokeh!

red tailed hawk 900 San Diego 649

In the red-tailed hawk picture, you can see all kinds of beautiful bubbly bokeh.

But see what happens when I try to take a picture of lights shining through the blinds? My havanese want their picture taken. Surely, I meant to do that, right?

Creating Magical Christmas Photos with Pretty Actions Magic

jenn-where-the-wild-things-are-sparkles-25-weeks-fireplace-900-055If you notice, the stockings are Star Wars in the background. I kept seeing cute pictures of magical sparkles and a light beam coming from a book kids were reading on the Pretty Actions FB page. I don’t have any little kids now. So how do I do this?

First, I used a photo sent to me by a fan of her cat, Merlin, reading one of my books. You see the jaguar print bedspread? He fantasizes that he is a hot jaguar too.

merlin-jaguar-hunt-sparkles-2I added the bokeh to blur out the background, and the sparkles and light. Sparkles and light are from Pretty Actions Magic in all these pictures.

https://www.photoshopactions.com/

This was the first picture I worked using a book, and I didn’t have the technique down very well. The one of my daughter is much better. That’s the last one I used the sparkles on. I’ve been taking her weekly pregnancy photos, and she’s at 25 weeks. So I wanted to do something different, and I told her about the book and the magic light. She wanted to use Where the Wild Things Are, one of her favorite stories growing up as a child. And throughout all our moves, we kept that and a few others that she wanted to read to her first child, when she had one.

The baby kicks like a wild thing, so it seemed appropriate. Of course, a big Christmas book would be fun too, but we didn’t have one. I used her cell light on the book to illuminate her. And only the fireplace was on, and no lights in the living room. I used a smaller brush to have more control over the curling sparkles in her picture, then used a wider brush to go back over the first line to give it more width and magic. It was hot, and she was sitting by the fire so she wore a short sleeved shirt. Texas, you know. But I’m thinking if she wore a long-sleeved shirt, maybe in green or red, that would have been even better. I don’t know if she has one, but maybe we can get a big Christmas book for baby and retake it for her 26th week.

fairy-reading-with-lights-900-006-recoveredMy second picture, I set up two nets of Christmas lights behind the fairy writing in a book. I actually have a little battery run candle on top of her lap, and the little lamp post also has a battery run light. I turned both on, then added a light from the Pretty Actions Magic to create the illusion of more light, sprinkled some sparklers throughout the Christmas lights, and added the magic dust. To get the blurred effect on the lights, I pulled her to the end of the kitchen counter to create more of a bokeh effect.

santa-mailbox-christmas-snow-and-sparkle-900This was my first use of the Pretty Actions Magic. I was trying to think of how to create something to use it with before I thought of how I could do one with a book. I also used Pretty Actions Snow Overlay, and it’s really great for making a Texas scene where it was cold and wet that day to a perfectly magical snowy instead. Also, I added a glowing light in the slot for the mailbox. I love the picture of the mailbox, but it’s so inanimate, until I used the snow and magic to make it appear to have movement.

I want to do one with my puppies reading a book, but I haven’t figured out how I am going to do it yet.

Another idea is to have a special box that seems to have magic inside it. So I want to try that too. 🙂  But this goes to show you that you don’t have to have a child reading a book to have some Christmas magic fun. Just anything will do.

Just have fun!

Glass baubles creating bokeh when I was trying to capture the bird.

I’ve been trying to ignore all the wildlife outside while I work on the story. But I saw the dragonfly land on the roses, and I haven’t seen one land in forever. So I went outside to capture it, and then saw 3 different kinds of butterflies, and managed to get good pictures of two kinds. The bird, I captured through the window, not the best, but I wasn’t sure what it was, so I wanted to take a picture to ask fans what they thought it was. I saw the glass baubles catching the light and creating a bokeh affect. Really pretty.

Back to the book! 🙂

Have a wonderful day! 🙂
