Green Heron and Baby Chick

Man was I tired yesterday. You know how they say you need to have a day break from work after a trip to recuperate from the vacation, well, it’s true! Little one and I started on a rainbow sewing project. She has a cloud, two unicorns, and can’t remember what else to sew. I have to help with it, but she’s loving it. We still have to finish the rainbow too.

I managed only to take care of two things that had come up while I was gone. I need to work on proofing Silence of the Wolf, but with my granddaughter here until late, I just couldn’t manage. So after I get groceries tomorrow, I’ll have to get to work on it. I discovered, when I went to get her some milk, mine had gone bad!

I did work on some of the photos when I had time, so here is a Green Heron and its baby chick. This was at the Birding and Nature Center on South Padre Island. The heron was on the railing of the boardwalk and I had taken several pictures of him/her, momma or daddy, and then saw something small move on the reeds next to the water down below. I captured a couple of shots before the baby moved into the grasses and hid its face. So cute.

I didn’t manage to get to the 5 story tower there, but we walked all over the boardwalks for 2 hours after already having a long day of it at the beach. Just too much fun! And I was in hog heaven being able to take pictures of the birds and alligators, turtles, crabs, and a bunny rabbit. Oh, and barn owl and tortoises. It would have been even better if it had been overcast, but you have to do what you have to do.

Now I want to go to the birding boardwalk we’re supposed to have around here. I’ll have to check into it. But I’ll want to go when it’s not so beastly hot.

Have a beautiful day. I’ve got to get going on mine!

Green Heron and a Field of Wild Blanket Flowers

There’s nothing like having water in the garden as hot as it is right now, and the birds will probably love the little birdbath with the solar bubbler once they get used to it. They love the fountain. I love water!

So on my HOT, HOT, HOT walk yesterday, it was super muggy and 93 heat index at 7 am. So keeping my lens from fogging up was a struggle. lol

The green heron/blackbird, dove, was a green heron. The sun was shining so brightly off the water, I couldn’t make it out. From the distance I was, and the sun and the foggy camera, it was hard to tell. The green heron, like other herons, have a long neck, but they often keep them tucked close like this–at least when I see them.

Also, this is one of the pictures of the blanket flowers. Several weren’t any good because right after I cleaned my lens it would fog right back up. *sigh*

I spent the evening dancing and having grilled burgers with the kids last night. Well, my daughter and I dancerized, and my granddaughter did a little. We usually have two barking corgis getting underfoot and my granddaughter sometimes gets in the way, or grabs our legs for a hug and my daughter and I spend a lot of time laughing. That exercises our stomach muscles. lol

I did manage 2,000 on Wolff Bros (8,000), and 1,000 on Cougar (14,000).

Hope you are all having a safe and great weekend!

Green Heron and Cougar

I saw the green heron on my walk, the cougar in the zoo, lol. The cougars usually are half hidden, pacing, too far away, so I was glad to get a good shot of one close up and standing still. The green heron was a long ways away, but he turned out pretty good.

Still working on the Highland novella. It was so fun to write. I had to keep researching for it for the storyline details, but also–I had to remember to call lakes–lochs, dollars– pounds…

Because of how bad Texas has gotten with the COVID-19, we have to wear masks now for 3 weeks. Not that I wasn’t, but now it’s mandatory for everyone who wasn’t. I guess they’d prefer having everything shut down again. Our hospitals are getting overwhelmed! People don’t realize that it’s not just COVID-19, but if you break a leg, have a heart attack, get in an accident, you might not have a bed for you!

Have a great day! I’m off to work on the novella and play with the family in a little bit. 97 degrees and heat index is HOTTER.

Taking the Wrong Path…

Between having the flu Fri and yesterday and violent thunderstorms that knocked out my electricity, I didn’t blog. Is this like the dog ate my school paper???

We were lucky we didn’t have any tornadoes in the are like some places did. Feeling better today, but still no appetite. Which is a good thing, isn’t it? Still nauseous though, and that’s no fun.

But this was what I meant to show when I took my walk to see the purple irises but went the wrong way–a green heron (thought it was a snakebird), but when I looked up the pictures of closer shots on the internet for snakebirds–it wasn’t right. The coloration is the same as a green heron. He “reels” in his neck and so it looks like he doesn’t have a long neck.

These are the best pictures I’ve ever gotten of one. He was right down below me on the bank of the pond, but I hadn’t seen him and I startled him. I was trying to get a picture of a great white heron across the pond. So the green heron flew up onto the rock wall. Then when he realized I wasn’t coming after him and he was still hungry, he flew down to the big boulders and made his way back to the water. I took a few more pictures, one of him as a reflection in the water, and then left him in peace. 🙂 <3

Despite being sick and not turning on my PC all day yesterday because of the continuing storms, I did manage to add 1300 words to the story. Seven hundred words short, but I’ll try to make that up today.

Off to write! Have a great day!!!
