Mockingbird

Electricity was out first thing this morning, but thankfully I had heated my water for tea already and it’s much colder outside today, so I was outside trying to put that garden bed together. Problem. I need another pair of hands for the bottom bolts. Before, I could flip it upside down, and do the bottom ones. Now with putting ends on, there’s no flipping it any longer. *sigh*

Okay, so I had an idea for Highlander, but it’s getting too complicated for a fun Highland romance. I always have mystery and intrigue, suspense, but I just need to start this differently. I’m not giving up on my original idea because it’s much more different than I’ve ever done and with over 100 books written, I always need to come up with something new. So I need to go back to thinking mode.

And I need to put the rest of the garden bed together. Taking a rest. It’s cold out there and I still have this head cold.

Have a beautiful day!! I’ve got to get to writing!

Nitpicky Little Things…

You know, life is full of them! Those nagging little things that need to be taken care of–the weeds pulled, and stuff readied for the mail, the garbage set out, the list made that I neglect to make, then run to the store and forget half of the things I really needed to get. Why is that? I know I  need to get them, and then…there’s all this other stuff I really want to have. Not NEED to have, but WANT to have.

So I was up at 4:45, got all the nitpicky little things out of the way, and now I have to write my blog and I’m tired. Maybe I should go back to sleep. 🙂

But, wait, I have more things to do. Lots of more things to do. Who could sleep at a time like that? Right?

Yesterday, I went out to refill a bird feeder, but the juvenile doves were sitting on it. I figured they’d leave when I got close. But they didn’t. So I returned to the house and took my camera and got really close to the birds and took photos. The one in the feeder was so tame, he just waited there the whole time.

The mockingbird landed near me too, and a house finch was on the fountain behind me, but he flew off when I turned around.

Have a great one!

Mockingbird, What Are You Doing?

mockingbird with wings outstretched (640x427)The mockingbird was lifting his wings, pulling them close to his body, lifting his wings, and I realized he was probably showing off to a female. The things we do in the name of love.

But I did think the shadow he made when his wings were outstretched were pretty cool too. 🙂

Have a great day!!!

A Golden Bird and Tree that Aren’t Really Golden at All

A Golden Bird

A Golden Bird

Because of the way the sunlight was reflecting off the variegated privet, it looked golden, as did the bird that appeared to be busily getting twigs to build a nest. I think she is a mockingbird. I didn’t want to draw closer because I knew I’d scare her off, and she was fascinating the way she was working on twigs, twisting around, bending down, and watching for danger.  She might be a he, what do I know?privet spring 2013 (640x477)Here’s what the privet looks like when it’s just coming out in spring. Though it is evergreen, it sheds leaves in the spring and here it is with all kinds of new leaf growth. It’s yellow and green when the sun isn’t making it look like pure gold.

Okay, I’m off to work on The Viking’s Highland Lass, though I’ll be taking off for the holidays. 🙂 <3 And this year, when I usually get my edits over the Thanksgiving holiday, I got them done before hand. Woohoo!

Have a great day!!!

Mockingbird

bird 015 (640x427)bird 017 (640x427) bird 016 (640x427)

I have a new lens 70-300 for my Canon, and I haven’t been able to get any shots of anything worth shooting since I got it. But then I heard a mockingbird singing away in its multitude of tunes beneath the window. Hot old Texas had finally gotten cool, so I had my windows open, but still, the screen is in place. In the past, I’ve used an 18-135 lens and gotten blurry pictures of cardinals sitting in the same shrubs because the lens has focused on the tree branches, difficult to see. I really thought the new lens would have the same result because of the shadows in the shrubs and because it would focus on nearer objects. Disappointing because the cardinal had come right up to the window too, curious as to what the one-eyed monster was that was peering back at him and he was not in focus at all.

Did you know the Mockingbird is the Texas state bird?

I got as close to the mockingbird as I was able before he flew off, and of course the branch was in the way, so it focused on it more than the bird, but even so, these are the best bird shots I’ve ever gotten through the window, of a bird in the evergreen variegated privet. The background almost looks like a stained glass windowpane. Touches of bokeh. Really pretty.

I think these are sparrows. These were shot with the 18-135. In the first one, you can see the window screen. It would have been fun to get a picture of them with the 300 lens to see what a difference it would have made.
