Sprouting Havanese Instead of Tomatoes

max and the tomato bin 004 (640x402)I bought two of these to grow tomatoes in. And the next thing I knew while I was putting the wheels on one, the other had sprouted a Havanese. So Max is looking for the tomatoes to eat. Tanner is checking to help out.

Fog

I went to a St. Patrick’s Day party last night and won a towel with luck of the Irish written all over it. I love it. Since I have several ancestors who came from Ireland, seems appropriate! I couldn’t decide whether to go because I was finishing up edits on Viking to turn in to my critique partner. Then I need to work on more of hers. But since I finished mine, and another chapter of hers, I decided I needed to get out and meet people.

We had fun. Played Bingo and had to ask everyone questions to learn who had done what or had something on the bingo card–like flown in a helicopter, or had more than one cat. NO one had more than one cat. But I still won! And I took some book marks and some Advance Reading Copies (ARCs) of one of my books and autographed a couple, one for a couple’s librarian daughter and another for a romance reader. It was fun for me and fun for them.

I was glad I took off from working and just plain went. Plus, by meeting people, talking to them, you never know when something they might do or say could end up in a story! lol

Have a wonderful day!!

Bluebirds and Bugs!

mockingbird and blue bird 009The male bluebird was actually hidden in the rain gutter forever. He was working on all the bugs up there. What a lovely little bird! And so I was standing there holding my camera up forever, trying to get a shot of him. And there he was! And this time he held still for me.

female bluebird (611x640)A little while later, a female arrived. She landed on the fence and wouldn’t turn enough for me to really show off her blue feathers. They’re not really bright like the male’s, but they are a light blue.

But she decided this was her good side and would only show it off to me. 🙂

I’ve been moving burford holly to the backyard. It was underneath the front windows and gets to 8 feet in height. I didn’t want to have to sheer them constantly to keep them lower. I’m all for the low maintenance garden. The one where the plants are where they should be, with room to grow and not have to be cut back because they are too big for the spot they’re sitting in. The hollies have red berries the birds love to eat and they’re great protection for birds that want some cover.

moved burford holly 002 (640x427)

I also have a couple of skyrocket holly that will get to 10 feet, but only spread a foot wide. 🙂 Anyway, now the backyard will begin to look like a garden and not just like a backyard. 🙂 I bought some lavender also, just need to figure out where to plant it. Oh, and yes, the puppies are trying to eat the birdseed.

Have a great day! Back to edits on the The Viking’s Highland Lass!

Marigolds–Great as a Tomato Companion

But first: A great review from RT Magazine!

“Spear has become a master storyteller with striking depth of emotion and wonderful characters… if you’re looking for a love story with adventures, a little love humor and a sexy crime-fighting hero, this story would make a great addition to your collection.” – RT Book Reviews, 4 StarsAlpha Wolf Need Not Apply (487x800)marigolds and double knockout roses 001 (640x427)marigolds and double knockout roses 004 (640x545)I planted marigolds, planned to plant them around tomato bushes, but sort of got the cart before the horse. I ordered the planters for the tomato bushes, but they won’t be here for another few days. So I went ahead and planted these around the pine trees and they make it look like miniature fairy gardens. They’re great for deterring some kinds of bugs, which is why they’re perfect to plant with tomato plants. The first pine tree was no problem. I started working on the second, fire ants, ugh. So I moved to the third pine tree, more fire ants. There’s no better way to ruin a fun planting day! Especially if you manage to get bitten.

But it made me wonder if the marigolds would make the fire ants move. They have a noxious odor, but I love it because I know some of the more pesky bugs hate it. Their roots also emit a substance that deters some kinds of bugs. It made me wonder what other plants help with that. Here is a list of what works with what.

http://gardening.about.com/od/naturalorganiccontrol/a/Companion.htm

Someone was mentioning lavender is a great plant for chasing away mosquitoes, so I’m going to try some of that. 🙂  The article also talks about beneficial insects, and plants that compliment other plants, help them to do even better, which I hadn’t heard about.

Okay, back to Viking. Working on edits.

Have a great day!

Moving Plants

I met three of my neighbors today, and we were all talking about how we have to move plants that the builders had planted too close together and on top of the houses. 🙂 I want to do that before mine get too big for their space and are harder to move. But it’s fun having neighbors who are interested in that sort of thing.

pink plants (640x502)plants neighbors 023 (640x427)These were a pretty annual of some sort that my one neighbor put it. Love them. But I love perennials that come back year after year. Silver Cockscomb: http://www.flowersofindia.net/…/Silver%20Cockscomb.html

plants neighbors 007 (640x427)plants neighbors 008 (640x427)These were flowers that had come back from last year, so perennials.

plants neighbors 032 (640x427)And this is the flower to that tall grass.

plants neighbors 034 (640x427)plants neighbors 015 (545x640) (2)And this was another mystery flower. Perennial.

Well, I bought a couple of double roses, a couple of trailing roses, and a couple of skyrocket holly. 🙂 Moving burford holly to the backyard tomorrow. They get to 6 ft tall, around 4 feet wide? Anyway, they need to be planted 2 1/2 feet from each other, I think the 6 are planted about a foot from each other. And they’ll be blocking the windows.  I hope I put them in a good location and don’t have to move anything again. 🙂

Do you find that the little shrub or tree looks so little that you need to plant a lot of them closer together, then one day they’re way too big? Or you have to take your pruners or hedge trimmers to them all the time? That’s what I want to avoid. 🙂

Have a super great day!!!!

Sometimes You Give it All You’ve Got and…

You still don’t get nothing!

squirrel and Tanner on his back 002 (640x427)And worse than that, here I am trying sooooo hard, and I’ve got an audience! Hey, what are you looking at, bub?

squirrel and Tanner on his back 004 (640x427)The dove is smiling. That is one dumb squirrel. Didn’t you see the design? Squirrel-proof. That means the birdseed is for the birds. That’s me.

squirrel and Tanner on his back 009 (640x427)And me. After playing outside, getting as much birdseed as I could sink my teeth into, and getting brushed and brushed and brushed, that’s me. Totally passed out. Mom said the dogs were barking next door. Nope. Didn’t hear them. She turned on the camera, which means it’s showtime for me and I have to sit up and pose. Didn’t hear it. Sometimes life just wears me out.

What about you?

Have a super great Monday!!!

Did You Spring Forward???

Can a Blackbird take a swan dive?

Brown-headed Cowbird–males

Females on the ground

Females on the ground

Bird in flight

Bird in flight

blackbirds, female and male 088 (504x640)This blackbird seemed to be feeding the other, both males.

blackbirds, female and male 087 (442x640)Here they were before the exchange.

Okay, so you write the story, do you show what happened first, and then the end result? Sometimes it’s more dramatic to show what led up to that, in a different sort of way.

blackbirds, female and male 086 (480x640)And here they were at first, like he was offering the seed to the other. They appeared to be conversing, until the one bird’s beak connected with the other in a mutually agreeable way.

So for those of us stuck with changing our dumb clocks forward, which by the way, doesn’t make the clock dumb, only the need to do so dumb, did you? Change all your clocks? Luckily, my computer, phone, and watch automatically do it. So do my alarm clocks. But my car doesn’t, and when I walked into the kitchen this morning and saw it was 4:30, I was ready to go back to bed. Yep, it’s really 5:30. But you know what? It’s REALLY 4:30. Changing the clock to 5:30 doesn’t make it so.

Ugh.

Have a great spring forward day. 🙂 Anyway!

Raindrops in a Downpour

Perfect raindrop off birdfeeder (640x599)You can see the rain heading toward the ground, but on top of the feeder, the rain hit the plastic and created its own special chorus. But I loved the raindrop dripping off the feeder best of all.

Pouring rain 111 (640x427)Rain off my neighbor’s house. He mentioned my rain gutters and how they have this rolling off their roof during storms and that’s exactly why I had the rain gutters put on the house as a condition of buying it. I had to put them on my old house, and my daughter has this problem too. I would have to go out with my puppies when I stayed with her and to get out into the grass, you and the dogs would get soaked.

Pouring rain 121Rainwater and droplets rushing of the roof into the gutters and down the spout. Someone mentioned capturing the water into a rain bucket to be used on plants in dry spells. Great idea, except that anything that collects water also creates mosquitoes here. So it’s not a good idea to have standing water.

But I do empty my cooled boiling water that I’ve cooked with on the plants. And boiling water on fire ant hills. So at least some of the water doesn’t go to waste. 🙂

Have a beautiful day!!

Books Made into Movies???? My Books???

Alpha Wolf Need Not Apply (487x800)Okay, so before I get ready to figure out what to wear to the gala opening night event, wait, what would I wear as the author of the book turned into a movie???? I guess I’d have to ditch the jeans for something more regal. Or not.

Yeah, yeah, I know, there are no offers on the table. No interest really. Just a company that has a directory of rights owners in case a movie or TV producer was interested.

But I’m a writer, so I have a really great imagination. And there the first 21 wolf books are up on the screen. Dream away. But hey, I’ve never been asked to even include my name in the directory, so it’s a start, right?

Head back out of the clouds, and with the storms we’re having we’ve had lots of them, and back to the book.
