That’s So Random, Mom

No, I didn’t say that to my mom. My daughter used to say that to me.

Yes, that’s me. Totally random.

Here are today’s random thoughts.

A beautiful sunrise!

Sunrise in Texas

Sunrise in Texas

A Peacock Bear!

Working on bear orders, but was too excited and wanted to make this up.

Peacock Bear in early morning light

Peacock Bear in early morning light

Peacock Bear next to peacock boxes

Peacock Bear next to peacock boxes

And for more cool randomness, how’s this?

Ever look for a plastic container and its lid? That’s what I was doing this morning, after taking care of the puppies, the garbage, taking pictures of the sunrise and peacock bear, next, it was time for breakfast. That means cottage cheese, pineapple and a cherry on top. But I needed to put the pineapple slices from the newly opened can into a plastic container. (I’ve read where it’s bad for you if you leave the opened item in a can in the fridge.)  So I have one that is perfect. Actually a round glass one, but I have it in the dishwasher. So I open the cabinet WAY above the fridge that I can’t reach even with a stepping stool, and finally managed to pull down an assortment of plastic containers. Many are my parents’. Lids, no containers. Containers, no lids. Two were mine with lids. One is huge and I used it even though it’s so big. And the other too small.

It’s time to get rid of some plastic containers. I don’t just throw them in the trash though. Someone might be able to use lids for something else, or the containers, painting, water dishes for a pet.

The other day I was watering. And I had chased fire ants out of their home. I didn’t realize it, but they were in a long winding trail on the patio. And when I got inside, one was stinging me, biting away, angry. They really hurt. So I was looking for something to put on it. Found a spray for bug bites, squirted it out and yuck! It was icky brown in color.

That led to me looking all over for bug bite spray, finally used rubbing alcohol. But it meant I also have tons of old stuff that needs to be thrown out!!! So sometimes I guess the expiration date does mean something! Though, I don’t think they had any expiration date on the can. Probably too many hundreds of years old. lol

Oh, and no, I didn’t leave the fire ants alone. I’m afraid to use fire ant killer anywhere that my puppies are nosing around. So I boiled water over and over and over again, and believe me, that kills the ants. I read where you can take a scoop of fire ants from one mound and put them on another, and they will kill each other. Right. Like I want to move an angry lot of fire ants from one mound to another without getting myself bitten to death. I have no idea where they’re located. I haven’t seen any mounds, except for a small one by the mailbox.

So is that random enough???

Now I’m done with my random musings and off to write!

Does anyone ever accuse you of switching subjects without warning and say, “That’s so random?”

What a Mess! Time to Get Organized!

Do you ever find you spend way too much time looking for stuff when you need to work on something? You have to put it all away so that if someone is coming over, the place isn’t such a mess? And then you can’t find anything when you need it?

Well, I was thinking I needed to organize my bear supplies so I didn’t have to shove them in all kinds of hidey holes in the event someone was coming over. The problem is that I make bears nearly year round, having huge spurts of business, and then slow downs. So if I put it all away, the next thing I know I’ve got a bunch more bear orders. Then I’m searching for everything all over again. It’s not my income. Even though it’s a business. It’s just something I love to do. But I don’t like how it makes my house look like a wreck–well, in the family room where I live. The rest of the house is neat.

But I want the family room to look that way too.

I already had all the plastic boxes I fit inside the boxes, only I had to organize them because I had everything mixed with everything else and spent tons of time always trying to find what I needed.

Now I can better see if I’m running out of some materials. Otherwise, I’d think I had tons of something, and lots of orders, and wait, what? No eyeballs? So this should help me with inventory control also. 🙂

I still have fur to cut out, but at least for all the other bear making supplies, this will keep them better organized, and dust free too!

Do you need to be better organized?

These were on sale at Michaels and were only about $8 per box for the bigger ones, less for the smaller ones. So I’m thrilled.

Have a great day!

Now that I’m organized, I need to get back to writing and work on two bears that are waiting for me in that plastic tub!

🙂 <3

Puppy Alert! Hawk is Back!

hawk closeup facing me

Hawk Facing Us

hawk closeup

Hawk looking to the side, but still watching us

hawk turned around

Hawk’s head swiveled around looking for prey–do you see the shadow cast by one of his talons?

The birds saw him before he flew onto the electric pole.

Unfortunately, the puppies scared the birds out of their hiding place in the shrubs, but the hawk just stayed put so I could throw them back into the house (really, they run, I don’t throw them–author license), and grab my camera.

Then I took several shots of the hawk. He is sitting on my neighbor’s pole. But he’s been sitting in my bird seed dish before. And he got hold of something and was eating it in one of my shrubs one day. He actually crawled through my shrubs trying to get to baby sparrows. I ran out with my camera to try to take a picture of him, wondering what he was exactly.

Not One! But Several Hot Naked Highlanders in a Loch!

Subject lines are so important. Titles are so important. That’s what draws readers in. That’s why HEADLINES for news stories draw readers in.

Here is the link to my excerpt on the hot naked Highlanders! I’d post it here, but WordPress doesn’t allow for the code to be embedded for security reasons.

https://www.bublish.com/author/view/5924

Anyway, I’ve been experimenting with Bublish and so I’ve tried different books, different Titles to lead into the story. This one was the winner: Not One! But Several Hot Naked Highlanders in a Loch!

Now, of course, some could resist peeking. But I did have a much higher view rate than when I posted about my Dragon Fae or Taming the Wild Cougar. Not because those books are less interesting, but it all has to do with titles. Well, and hot Highlanders helps too. 🙂

The bottom line is that even though I had a record amount of views in one day–150, I had no click on book buy sites and my sales continued to be the same as before. Which means? Doesn’t work for me. Maybe some day the site will help sales, but for me at least, no.

On the subject of titles. You write this fantastic blog, work really hard on it, but no one clicks on it to read it. So yes, subject lines really help.

Oh, and I swear the naked Highlanders were in the loch, but by the time I got to this point in the blog and took pictures, they were halfway dressed.

Taming Wild Highlander1800x1200smallerquote copyher highland hero cover with title cursive3 (432x640)Highland Rake 160His-Wild-Highland-Lass--Nook (1)

Which comes to another point of the blog–your title should be relevant. How many have looked at a sensational title on an Internet search to see the picture of–Lion and Donkey have offspring! Okay, so maybe it was a Lion and Tiger, or something like that. But, you want to see a picture of the cute little beast. And there is none.

So like in a story, or a blog post, if you post about naked Highlanders in a loch, you should really not tease about it. 🙂  I did share the link, couldn’t embed it in this post like I wanted to.

The same goes for titles if you’re trying to sell your story too. I submit a story to an agent or editor, entitling a story: Jenny

I put that title in the subject line in an email to an editor or agent and it probably isn’t going to get much of a response. Okay so I want to come up with a Title that gets attention. It doesn’t mean that the title will stay like that either, though. Editors have changed some of my well-meaning titles to something that means nothing at all in the guise that it will sell more books, and it doesn’t. Reviewers will even say that they expected something else from the title. So titles can help gain attention in anything you do. Blogging,  writing short stories, novels, even emails to friends. And emails to editors and agents. Make that subject line really catch their attention!

So you write an email to a friend: Hey, how are you doing? Then in the gist of your letter, you tell how you had one of those worst days ever.

Friend is busy, will eventually get to the email. If you put this in your subject line–You Would Not Believe What Happened to Me

Your friend will make time to read your email.

Sometimes I do this with personal messages on Facebook. Something will happen, and I can’t type it right that second. I just leave an OMG! And take off to take care of it. Like, puppies have done something they shouldn’t. Well, not them. They’re perfect little angels. If I write that, I get lots of responses. What? ????? All kinds of responses. Then silence as my friend waits with baited breath to hear what disaster just befell me.

Try it sometime. But make sure it’s a disaster first, or it’s like Crying Wolf.

It’s a cliff hanger! Sometimes I’ll do that, and then begin typing what just happened. But it’s that initial subject line: OMG! that grabs the readers attention.

Okay, I’m up to 6500 words on Covert Cougar Christmas and hope to get to 10,000 today. 🙂 Today is Monday, btw. At least I keep thinking it is. And that’s a good thing. Since it’s Sunday, I have more time to write. 🙂

Starting Over!

Let me think on that

Let me think on that

The beginning of the story is oftentimes not the beginning of the story. I have to remind myself of this repeatedly. So when I have to start over from the beginning, it doesn’t matter that my 7600 words is now 2700. It’s okay, because the story needs to be told in the new way. And it’s okay that I’ve done this twice already and this is the third shot at it.

In romance novellas with suspense and action, and the paranormal, and romance, you’ve got to try to incorporate all if it early on. Because it’s shorter than a novel, I don’t have time to build up the plot. Or several of them.  Though I often start with some action, suspense, trouble. Sometimes I just need to work on my back story a bit to get a feel for the new characters. Learn something about them. I don’t make character lists. For me, that would be boring and I’d lose all interest in the story.

So I’m hoping I can catch up on my word count because I was just planning my word count goal for this book and the next that have deadlines, and not much wiggle room. 🙂 I do hope to write The Viking’s Highland Lass also, after Jaguar Christmas is turned in in November.

That means I’m back to writing… 4900 words to go to catch up. 🙂 Maybe I’ll make it by tomorrow. lol

Have a great Saturday! Have a Maxwell Clan bear to make this weekend also.

🙂

Okay, so I’ve been working on bears, wracking my brain for ideas and brainstorming with fans about Covert Cougar Christmas and I’ve come up with an idea. The story is a novella so no time to waste on multiple plots. It has to have one main plot–a love story, mystery plot and shapeshifting!

So I’m off and running!! Happy hump day!

I took pictures of these after I finished them and put the puppies to bed. Had to finish one more after that, but it was too dark out to photograph outside last night.

Photographing can be hazardous to your health. Did you know that? I made the mistake of leaning on one knee on the pavement to steady the camera, and man, it was hot. 106 degrees today, and it wasn’t much cooler at 7:30 PM. So, yep, burned my knee.

So next, getting ready to ship these. And I hear there’s a Mission Impossible movie out, so probably will treat myself to that for finishing two books this week. And the teddy bears. 🙂

Need to start on Covert Cougar Christmas, but had to get the bears done. Then got another order. 🙂  Still trying to come up with a great action packed opening for the Christmas story. In fact, after that is the jaguar Christmas story. How can I think of snow and Christmas when it’s 106 degrees out? I need to watch snow stories. 🙂

Have a great day!!!

The End! And Last Sunflowers of the Season

Taming the Wild Cougar WEB 05082015

Taming the Wild Cougar is done! And with beta readers. 🙂 I always love it when that happens! Normally, I’d want to publish it soon. But this time I have it on preorder. I also need to work on the print copy.

Cougar shifter, Dr. Kate Parker, is planning her annual camping vacation alone this year. She runs into trouble before she even starts her trip in the form of one wounded, hot cougar undercover cop—or so he says. He’s not going along with just her tender loving care because he came into town as a cougar, and he needs her help to get him back to where he can take up the search to look for an arms dealer, who just happens to be a cougar too.

Leyton Hill slipped into the unlocked, darkened clinic, figuring his luck had just changed. Except he doesn’t plan for the good doctor to be napping in her office. Taking him on her vacation wasn’t in the plan, and taking her hostage, hadn’t been either, but now she’s stuck with him until he can get back to his mission and the chase at hand. It appears the roles have reversed and who’s holding whom hostage now?

So I’ve been working on 4 bear orders for the last two days and working on them. 🙂 Still have a long ways to go. And I’ve got to jump on Covert Cougar Christmas next. It’s a novella, started it last night, didn’t like the idea and so starting over. It’s part of an anthology Alpha’s Unwrapped and my character didn’t sound alpha enough, so need to rethink how I begin it.

Available Oct 20, 2015, but get your reduced price of 99 cents now. It will be $4.99 the week after release. I’ll post more links here once they have the preorder links available. 🙂 <3

I can’t get my laptop to work as far as the Internet goes. Not sure what the trouble is, but it’s frustrating. So I can’t continue to upload anything to iBooks.

It’s time for a trip somewhere…like to Alaska! I went north to see my son and it was 93 there! When it was 93 down here. Something isn’t right! In Minnesota, they’ve been having our low of 76.
