Exercising More than Just Once–and Photography Find!!!

I decided I needed to take one dog at a time to really train them to behave while I’m walking them. One barks, the other barks. They both pull. So I took just Tanner because even though he’s my barker, he does stop to listen to me. My goal was three-fold (I do better if I have lots of goals, lol)–well, 4-fold: Take a dog for a walk, get some exercise, retake pictures that didn’t turn out yesterday, and train said dog to behave while walking. Plus, I figure if I exercise, I’ll be more productive.

NOT happening. Why? I get home and I’m dying to play with my photos. lol But, I did write more last night, so maybe it helped. I don’t know.

But, I was so excited when I started my walk.  I made a real photography find!!! Not one, not two, but three otters were playing in the fountain pond closest to me. I couldn’t believe it!!! So, I took a ton of pictures. It was early morning, so I’m still fighting with how to set my camera, and I need to get some filters to cut water glare. I’m learning.

Soooo, some turned out, and I took a picture of the fountain again to catch the rainbow that I had wanted to catch yesterday.

I wanted to take a picture of a small waterfall and capture the blue flowers in front of it. So the waterfall ended up being this beautiful bokeh.

blue-flower-by-the-fountain-and-bokeh-900-157And this was another where I showed the water.

I took Tanner to the kiddie park, no kiddies there, so he got to sit on the playground equipment, but he was too interested in sounds around him to bother paying attention to me. 🙂

tanner-on-stairs-to-slide-900I have a guy coming over to look at the ancient 100 foot pine tree in my yard that had just died. Hopefully he can take it down before it comes down in a storm!

Have a wonderful day!

Glass baubles creating bokeh when I was trying to capture the bird.

I’ve been trying to ignore all the wildlife outside while I work on the story. But I saw the dragonfly land on the roses, and I haven’t seen one land in forever. So I went outside to capture it, and then saw 3 different kinds of butterflies, and managed to get good pictures of two kinds. The bird, I captured through the window, not the best, but I wasn’t sure what it was, so I wanted to take a picture to ask fans what they thought it was. I saw the glass baubles catching the light and creating a bokeh affect. Really pretty.

Back to the book! 🙂

Exercise and Photography!

Okay, last time I took a walk to the park, my strap came off my camera and the camera hit the sidewalk. I was lucky. It only jarred the scan disks, but it meant no pictures. This time, I dumbly changed my setting, and should have left it like it was. But I did manage to take a couple of beautiful photos.

Now, I take the dogs for a walk, they’re dead right now, because they chased a St Bernard puppy back and forth across the parks. I was in the little one. He was in the big one.

But here are a couple of photos on the walk there.

park-walk-pink-grasses-water-fountain-900-003park-walk-fountains-flowers-sky-001st-bernard-in-water-and-tanner-in-water-900-065

And one of Tanner and the St Bernard.

I kept telling myself I wanted to walk. It was really cold this morning. For us. I kept telling myself I needed to write. Getting ready to take the dogs for a walk is a major effort. And taking pictures while I’m walking them can be too. But, I’ve gotten to the point where they will lie down when I pull out my camera. I stand on their leash so they’re not going anywhere, and then shoot away. 🙂

I just wish I’d left my camera on its original settings. I kept telling myself when it got cooler I’d start walking. So this was the beginning. 🙂 And I did get half of my word count before I walked, so off to do the rest.

Have a super great day!!

Shooting in the Wrong Light

blaine-and-all-3-doggies-900-071Usually my dogs are good at sitting still for a picture, but Tanner kept leaving place as I was trying to take this one. It wasn’t the perfect time to take photos, but my son was running over to play games with my daughter and SIL, so it had to do. It was soooo hot, but this morning, it’s delightfully cold. Wouldn’t you know. But you see that man’s best friend is looking adoringly at her daddy?  Mine weren’t paying any attention to me. lol

Here’s another picture of the giant Tiger Swallowtail. In this one, I managed to get a picture of it side view. Now remember, this butterfly’s wings were going a million miles a second. He wasn’t sitting still like it looks here. The only way to capture this shot was to change the setting to manual and set the aperture, etc, to catch speedy movements! Again, not the best time to take photos, but, I have to take them when the critters are about. He hasn’t been back since that one day. So catch them, or lose the shot entirely.

tiger-swallowtail-bokeh-sideview-001Allergies are getting me down. I always think when it gets cold it should kill off all the allergens. But it seems to make them worse. One time, when I was feeling like I do this morning, I went to see the dentist because my teeth hurt so bad. He told me it was sinuses. And sure enough, between allergy medicine that helps you to drain, not dry you up, because that can be worse, and over-the-counter pain medicine, the pain finally subsided.

It’s really hard to write when your teeth and head hurt, but if my hero and heroine and all their cohorts have to deal with pain and suffering, I can deal with it too! So onward and upward! 49,000 words left to go!

Have a super great day!!

Just Me and My Puppies

My son and Mishka left on their 13-hour drive home and of course, my puppies are looking for her because she’s supposed to be here. They also love my son. I’m sure for the next few mornings, they will run to her bedroom door, knowing she’s in there waiting for us to bring her out. My son was so hot here–between coming home from Alaska, and then landing into Omaha, Nebraska where it’s been a lot colder, he couldn’t acclimate to the Texas heat and humidity. Which meant keeping my AC way down lower than I normally do. So I’m hoping the house warms up soon. lol

double-cougar-trouble-shadowed-different-hair-light-source-900I was “goofing off” either working on promo stuff for the new release, writing a little, and visiting with my son, so now it’s back to work on the story and making some real progress!

Here are my kids giving me “The Look.” I’m not sure what I was doing, or said, but…this was the response. lol

Celebrating My Son’s Return Home

My son and daughter were giving me a hard time about finding fall color to stand by. Right. In Texas?  We had fancy cupcakes, the best one, mine! The German chocolate one. And I was practicing taking more portraits. 🙂

blaine-and-mishka-900-024My son is taking his dog, Mishka, back to Omaha, and it’s cold up there. So I grew out her fur and told him he can’t shave her all off. She needs her winter coat. They actually protect them in heat too. 🙂  But he’s not listening to me. She looks so cute with her fur! 🙂

macro-shot-of-blue-eye-900-text-005And I was having fun taking a picture of my son’s eye with a macro lens. 🙂

I’ve been goofing off, visiting with the kids and trying to figure out winners for the parties. So Friday, I need to get back on track with writing. My son will leave early to return home then.

Have a great day!!

Did you get your copy of a Very Jaguar Christmas yet?

a-very-jaguar-christmas-at-woodlands-mallI autographed copies of A Very Jaguar Christmas at The Woodlands Mall yesterday. My son is in town to pick up his dog after I took care of her while  he was in Alaska for three months. And this morning, I’m trying to figure out who won all the prizes on all the FB parties I was on!

But today  is Excerpt Wednesday, so I wanted to share:

The Trouble with Demons:

Witches and warlocks hide their true identities from the rest of the human population, while three teens with demon heritage living with human families, become unlikely companions in a race against time to deal with a demon threat to humankind in their own quirky way.

Alana Fainot, a witch and half Kubiteron demon, witnesses a Matusa murder his summoner, and she knows he’ll target her next. Raised by her mother, she has no idea who her demon father is. But when she’s pulled to a demon portal, she meets Hunter Ross, half Matusa, half human, who returns demons to their world, but who’s been poisoned by a Matusa and is more dead than alive. His human mother gave him up for adoption, and he doesn’t know who either of his birth parents are. His friend Jared Kensington, full blooded Elantus demon, less powerful than the Kubiteron, is a whiz at electronics and helps Hunter track demons in the city, but was abandoned by his parents on Earth world for reasons unknown. He’s determined to find help to save Hunter. Alana knows aiding any Matusa is a mistake, but when she learns Hunter is half human, she makes a deal—he protects her against the Matusa who will come for her, and she helps find his dad in the demon world to save Hunter’s life.

Often at odds, the three teens work together to stop the plans of a group of Matusa to take over the human race before it’s too late.

Excerpt:

“I wondered maybe if she’s taken Dad’s advice.” Uncle Stephen’s eyes were almost sympathetic.

Her mother hadn’t taken her grandfather’s advice since he kicked her out of the family when she became pregnant. Which meant Alana hadn’t had anything to do with her grandparents either. She frowned. Wonder what my demon grandparents would be like? She’d never even considered she had another set. “What advice did Grandfather give her?”

“That she find a warlock and settle down.”

She snorted. “That would be the day.” Yet a small niggling worry gnawed at her. What if her mother wanted to rejoin the secret magic users’ circles?

She could, once Alana was no longer at home. Was that what her mother was up to? She wanted to find a life with her own kind again? Clenching her teeth, Alana sat down, then took out her contacts. She had one more year left at high school. Couldn’t her mother wait until she went to college at least? Whose fault was it that Mom had ruined her own chances with a warlock?

Secrets, always secrets.

But… if her mother returned to the magic users’ circles, where would that leave Alana? Out in the cold? Not able to be part of the demon world or really fit into the human world… jeez, what had her mother done to her?

“What are those? Contacts? Why are you wearing them? None of us have vision problems.”

“I have red eyes when I get angry.” She tried to make her temper rise, but she couldn’t. The feelings had to arise naturally and despite how annoyed she was with her uncle, she apparently couldn’t make herself angry enough. And now she couldn’t quit wondering about the way her mother shipped her off so suddenly.

He shook his head. “She’s really taken this thing too far. Why didn’t you tell me about this last summer? I would have made sure you didn’t return to live with her.”

The way her blood boiled, Alana was certain her eyes glowed with fire, but her uncle didn’t seem to notice anything different. Ignoring his question, Alana figured she’d better get to the point of the matter. “I saw a Matusa demon summoned in Baltimore, then murder a woman. I’m sure the other two who had helped summon him were next on his agenda. He saw me watching him, but I wasn’t really physically there. I could sense everything in the darkened alley, the breeze, the odors, hear the words spoken, everything. It was some kind of an astral dream-walking experience. You know? Like being sleep paralyzed? Except I’m wide awake. So it’s not exactly like the out-of-body-experience, OBE, that scientists have studied. How could I be in two places at once if I wasn’t part demon? No witches or warlocks you know can do that, can they?”

“Hallucination? You’re not eating some of those mushrooms your grandmother was getting into last year, are you? She saw some of the most bizarre things until we realized what she was eating for a midnight snack.”

“I don’t do drugs, Uncle Stephen.”

Her uncle’s face turned stormy. “You haven’t had a near death experience, have you? If your mother didn’t tell me…”

“No, Uncle Stephen. I’ve never been clinically dead, or nearly dead.” Though if the Baltimore Matusa got hold of her…

He took a ragged breath. “That’s good to hear. If you’re done with your coffee, we’ll go back to work.”

So that was it? No death experiences, no using drugs, dismiss the issue? She growled inwardly. “Defensive spells?”

“Levitation, until you get your mind centered where it needs to be.”

Now, aren’t my eyes glowing red?

***

A half hour later, as the sun’s fiery orange glow sank beneath the earth, Alana was levitating two coffee cups. Concentrating was proving to be more difficult by the second, but she knew focusing had a great deal to do with successfully casting any spell.

She squinted, trying to make out the title on the book Uncle Stephen was reading. Barbecue recipes? He looked up at her, making sure the cups hadn’t moved.

Relaxing New Age music played overhead. The fragrance of the coffee lingered in the air. She licked her lips and could still taste the sweetened decaf. Outside, a light rain pattered on the cement walk, and she smelled the shower-cleaned air, totally attuned to her surroundings.

Closing her eyes, she concentrated on the cups. But before she knew what was happening, her eyes focused on a vision—a sign, Hayworth Motel, rusted, swinging loosely in the Texas breeze. Then her gaze shifted. The yawning portal filled with light drew her forth.

The wind whipped at her hair and clothes, and the garbage odor from a nearby dumpster permeated the warm, humid air, a slight rain drizzling.

A man moved into her vision, not from the portal, but from a few feet away. A Matusa demon with long, dark hair, but not the same as the one in Baltimore. Her breath caught. He didn’t see her yet, and she wanted to slip out before he did, but then she saw another. Much younger, maybe her age or a little older, he was tall like her Uncle Stephen, his blond spiked hair cut short, his blue eyes sharp and wary.

He was like the other, but not. She couldn’t pinpoint what made him different, besides being younger, but he was also a Matusa. She’d never seen two of them together. Was this something new? A gathering of the Dark Ones before they plotted to conquer the human race?

But where was the summoner?

Both the older man and the younger one turned to look at her, their eyes widening. Ohmigod. She took a step back. Leave, leave, leave!

The older one’s lips turned up and his eyes reflected his sinister delight. “She’s mine.”

Okay, back to figuring  out contest winners, and thanks to everyone for comments and likes on my blogs! I really appreciate it! 🙂 <3

Demetria  is feeling blue, but she and Tammy, Everett’s sister, get together for drinks and movies, but when one of the ladies drops a glass on the floor, Everett comes over to ensure the two of them are okay. So much for the start of his vacation. But he’s fine with it, as long as it affords him the chance to see Demetria again. Little does he know, the next morning when he gets a call from his mother at her jaguar daycare, their whole jaguar shifter world will change forever and he and Demetria will be given the assignment that will challenge them to the end in A Very Jaguar Christmas.

Excerpt from A Very Jaguar Christmas

“Okay, I’m going to make the call and hope these people are truly shifters and don’t think we’re crank callers,” Everett said.

“If they’re anything like us, they won’t believe you.” Wade settled against the couch.

“True.” Demetria sat next to Everett on the couch, surprising him…and pleasing him.

Maya and Wade’s brows lifted marginally. Wade’s mouth curved a bit as if to say, “I told you so.”

Demetria was watching Maya pull the pup around the floor with the rope toy, and Everett was glad she seemed to have missed his family’s reaction. “If someone called me and told me he was a wolf shifter, had come across a jaguar cub shifter, and needed to find the parent, I wouldn’t believe him. I’m sure since we didn’t know about them, they wouldn’t know about us either,” Demetria said.

“Agreed. Which is why it would be better if you could meet them in person.” Maya laughed when the pup went for her hand instead of the rope toy. “You’re just like jaguar cubs.”

Everett called the number for Devlyn and as soon as he picked up, Everett put the phone on speaker.

“Hello?” Devlyn sounded like he could be a big, growly wolf.

“Hi, I’m Everett Anderson and I’m going to tell you something that is going to shock you as much as it did me, but I’m looking—“

“I don’t want any.” Devlyn hung up on him.

Everyone laughed out loud but Everett. “What did I say?” He clearly had missed the punchline.

Demetri smiled. “He probably thought you were trying to sell him something. Let me try.” She punched in Devlyn’s number. “Hi, I’m Demetria MacFarlane and I’m trying to locate the parents of an Arctic wolf pup shifter who was left off at a daycare in Dallas, Texas.”

Silence. At least Devlyn didn’t hang up on her.

“I got your name and number from Chrissie Thompson, whose husband, Henry, is a friend of my law enforcement partner’s half sister.”

With civilians, they used the guise of being undercover federal agents. Until the wolf shifters realized the jaguar shifters existed, that would probably be the best approach to use with them for now.

When Devlyn didn’t respond, she tried again. ”We don’t have any idea how to get hold of the parents of the little boy, but we had to start somewhere. We realize you probably live too far away to be the ones we’re looking for, but we’re trying to find anyone who might know of them.”

“Have you got proof that you have a wolf shifter pup?” Devlyn asked.

Everett was practically holding his breath, but from Devlyn’s response, he had to be a wolf shifter. Otherwise, he most likely would have just hung up on Demetria.

“Yeah, sure. Just a sec. My partner took a video of the boy shifting so it shows what he looks like both as a boy and as a wolf pup.” Demetria sent the video to Devlyn and they all waited for a response.

“Hell, we don’t take videos of wolves shifting.”

Demetria let out her breath in an annoyed way. “Don’t you think we know that? How dangerous it can be for our kind? Though even so, I doubt anyone would believe it was for real. We need to locate the boy’s family. Once we locate some packs, we need to show them something that would prove we’re not making some false claim. How else are we going to identify the boy without driving all over the country and running into all kinds of dead ends, just like we have with you? Time is of an essence. His parents have to be frantic. How would you feel if you were him, lost and unable to return to your family? How would you feel if he was one of your own children?”

Everett smiled a little. Demetria wasn’t like any Guardian he ever knew, and he loved the way she handled the growly wolf.

“I don’t know the boy. We don’t know of any Arctic wolves or packs around here.” Devlyn’s tone of voice was still gruff, but he didn’t sound like he was ready to end the call so quickly now.

Everett noted the look of disappointment on everyone’s faces. “We really need to find the boy’s parents.”

“He looks to be about three and a half or four years of age. You should be able to ask him his name and who his parents are, maybe even his home address.”

“We didn’t have a chance to before he shifted.” Everett regretted that he hadn’t. Everett hadn’t expected him to shift, and  had been so shocked to learn of the existence of werewolves he hadn’t really thought of asking anything.

“You’re the guy who just called me?” Devlyn asked.

“Yeah. We’re working in the blind here.”

“Wolf packs don’t advertise their locations. You ought to know that. How exactly did you end up with the boy?” Devlyn sounded more curious now.

Everett realized they were getting further by just showing the video of the boy, even if the wolves might not like it. Everett and the others knew how dangerous it was to have any proof that any of them could shift. But under the circumstances, they needed the proof that they had a wolf shifter boy.

“He was dropped off at my mother’s daycare,” Everett said. “We couldn’t determine the identity of the woman on the security tape, but we assume she stole the boy from a wolf pack, then decided she had made a mistake and left him off at the daycare. She left no ID behind. Just a bag and a blanket.”

“She must have realized your place was a wolf daycare center. Which means she’s one of us. Why else would she have dropped off a wolf child at your particular daycare center?”

Everett glanced at Demetria to see her take on it. He was afraid as soon as he said that it wasn’t but was a jaguar shifter daycare instead, Devlyn would hang up on him.

Demetria shook her head, and he took that to mean he shouldn’t mention they were jaguars.

Now if I hadn’t been using manual and set it to catch the faster speeds, these would have all been blurs. I blurred the shrubs to show off the 3 butterflies in the other shot. That’s a Tiger Swallowtail, Fruit Fritillary, and Black Swallowtail. Two of them were so blended with the “busy shrubs”, it was hard to see them. But it looks like a fairy garden right now! I keep seeing a large yellow one also, but it doesn’t land at all to get a shot. the orange ones don’t flap as much, but the swallowtails’ wings flap like crazy.

Tomorrow is the big release day, so if you haven’t picked it up yet, A Very Jaguar Christmas will be out tomorrow! 🙂

Have a super great day! Back to Double Cougar Trouble. My son will be getting in tonight. Washed all the puppy beds yesterday, and still need to wash all of them and go grocery shopping! The cupboards…and fridge…are bare!

Finding the Muse

Everyone needs to find the muse. Not just photographers or writers or artists.

Yep. What motivated you, inspires you to do anything?

Yesterday as I was writing my wordcount on Double Cougar Trouble, I kept seeing tons of butterflies fluttering all over the pentas flowers. And house finches at the feeder. And you know, the camera is sitting right next to me. Oh, and the puppies were playing. So everything was being my muse, for photography. So I quickly opened up another page on how to shoot the right shutter speed for ridiculously fast moving butterflies. Well, for them, it’s not ridiculous. For me…ahem…

So I put the camera back in manual mode, figuring with the new settings, I was bound to get some more of the really overexposed shots, but this one worked. I tried posting the link, but it’s giving a bunch of stuff when I only want to add the link. So just look up: motion-shutter-speed-freeze-blur.2-orange-butterflies-clear-900

The other thing I needed a muse for was Photoshop manipulation. So while I half watched a ghost story set in England around 1920, I also watched several photoshop manipulations. They don’t give details exactly on how it’s done, but I was watching them and maybe if I keep watching them over and over, I’ll finally see what it is they’re doing so I can do the same. I had seen them on my laptop, so not  sure what the site was. But here is one that I thought was pretty cool that I found on another site.

Ghost Love Story – Photoshop Manipulation Tutorial

And the reason for looking into this more is that I am working on a cover, and I want to make it better. I’m still not happy with it, so will have to keep trying.

raven-by-brick-and-lantern-900This was one I was playing around with, but I know I haven’t really gotten my light sources right. This is not the one for the cover though. Or maybe it will be eventually. The one I’m working on is Double Cougar Trouble, and once it looks like I want it to look like, then it will also be my muse.

Now I need to get my house cleaned up for my son’s visit. And you see, that’s my muse!

Have a great one!!
