Fun for Memorial Day? Or the Same O’ Same O’?

Well, I’ve got edits for SEAL Wolf Diving for Trouble and waiting on a beta reader to see if I need to change anything more on She-Wolf, so that’s what I’m doing. Working, and working and working.

But today, at 6:30, at BN, Waco, we’re having a multiple author contest, so that will be my big exciting thing to do.

I’ve got to get back to edits, but I had to take some morning pictures too. It’s wet out and the snails were having a gathering of the clan.

Then I tried to take a macro portrait of the puppies. They move too much.  But I did get one of them where they didn’t when I was teaching them down before they got their morning meal! Bad hair day or cute and scruffy? The puppies were out in the wet grass before I fed them, and they tend to nose through the wet grass, so they don’t look half as cute as when I brushed them all up last night. Will have to try this again later. 🙂

Okay, back to writing. Have a super great, wonderful Memorial Day weekend. And if you’re in town, drop by Barnes and Noble for chances at all kinds of prizes, and I’m giving away free copies of The Vampire…In My Dreams to anyone who purchases a book at the store. (Or if you’re bringing in books to have me autograph also).

Woohoo, TGIF!!!

Are you doing anything special?

Toads are Beautiful

I saw my first toad some months ago.

Toad (640x427)

Then I was out pulling bur weeds and baby toads, like little frogs but wartier, were hopping out of the grass. I didn’t catch them on film.

Then I took the puppies out and found this juvenile toad in the grass. Last night when I took the puppies out one last time, he was sitting on the sidewalk and both puppies ran right over him, never noticing him, thankfully. But that’s where my security light is on and the spiders have built massive webs there and the toads are out…so who would have ever thought I’d made a nice little ecological niche for toads and spiders when I replaced the security light there?

toad (2) (640x584)

This one looked like the one on the sidewalk last night, much smaller than the one hiding next to the sidewalk above.

I wish I could have caught the babies in a picture. I’ve never seen baby toads before and like many babies, they were cute. Remember, you might think toads are ugly–if you don’t do what a witch wants of you, she will turn you into a toad. Yep, I even had that happen in a book–The Vampire…In My Dreams.

Poor toads. They have such a bad reputation.

But toads are beautiful and they do eat insects, which make them even more beautiful. Don’t you think?

What one man sees as beauty, another sees as trash.

To me, they were beautiful creations by ancient man that help to tell his story. But to some, they are nothing more than broken pieces of pottery–trash. And the graffiti that modern people had added to the cliffs–looked similarly to the early pictures on the walls.

So trash and graffiti or beauty in the making?

It’s totally in the eye of the beholder.

Totally Clueless

Sabine Arctic Wolf and Zoerro Gray Timber Wolf

Sabine Arctic Wolf and Zoerro Gray Timber Wolf

I’m working on She-Wolf Leader of the Pack, trying to finish up edits on it, moving some scenes around which means having to change a lot of stuff around those scenes because one change changes a lot, and I was sharing the scenes with one of my beta readers from Minnesota on messages on Facebook to see if it’s working. Then I get another message from a friend, who lives in San Diego, and she warns me to stay clear of Waco, there’s been a whole lot of shooting.

So then I have to stop writing in my little fantasy world where I’m very happy and see what’s going on in the real world.

Of course, you always have lame reports just so someone can say they reported the news right away, ie, there was fighting over a parking space between rival biker gangs that left 9 dead and 18 wounded. There were 3 gangs involved. No, there were 5 gangs involved and it started in a restroom of a Twin Peaks restaurant. My daughter and SIL had informed me it was like a Hooters–scantily dressed women, drinking. We usually don’t have this kind of violence in Waco. Yes, we have crime like everywhere else.

But 150-200 bikers at one club–from different outlaw biker gangs? I was totally clueless.

We actually have a Christian biker group that meets at our library and they’re very nice. So it’s certainly not to say that all biker groups are bad. And apparently, only a very small percentage are, but these are reported to be involved in major drug crime and more.

The Central Texas Market Place is a nice place, and several new stores were just opened around the time I went to New Mexico. I do a lot of my shopping there, so I say again, I was totally clueless that anything like this could happen there.

We live halfway between Dallas and Austin, about an hour and a half, north and south of us, very much the center of Texas. We’re about 3 hours from Houston and 3 hours from San Antonio, so in the middle of all the big cities. Would we have had this deadly shootout if the restaurant hadn’t been there? From what police say, the restaurant management didn’t discourage the gathering of these biker gangs there.

Who knows. We’re so central to everything, maybe they would have just met at another hot spot. Truly, I didn’t know we had any organized crime outlaw biker hot spots to go to. But according to news reports I’ve read, and who knows how accurate they are, this one had been catering to the gangs for quite a while.

In any event, the rest of the Market Place is very family-oriented. It was a real shock to see that this could happen there. My daughter even called me from Houston, warning me they expected more trouble and not to go into Waco, and saying again I should move closer to them. I love my daughter and SIL.

Anyway, I have obedience training tonight for my puppies, and I’m seriously thinking of not going in. And I need to get something from the car dealership where I bought my car, and it’s really close to the Market Place. *sigh*

Maybe I should just stay in my fantasy world. There truly is something to be said about ignorance being bliss.

Do you ever feel clueless about things like this?

Beauty in the Storms

closer up sunflowers storms blue

bad storms (640x427)

It’s raining, it’s pouring, the old man is snoring.

Storms can be devastating–causing floods, fires, stirring up wind devils. But they can be beautiful too. And when we have all heat, sun, and no rain for months, we’ll look back on these stormy days with longing for their return. Of course, it would be nice to just have some gently raining days. Nice evening showers, and then the rest of the time we can play outside. But we have to take what we can get.

That means running the puppies out in the storms, losing the Internet, and having to turn off the computer. Ugh.

But, still, I love the storms, the electricity in the air, the smell of the rain on the wind, the clouds building into artistic creations, the streaks of lightning reminding us how powerful storms can be, and the sheet lightning turning on and off as if a kid discovered the light switch and was testing it out.

Okay, back to She-Wolf edits and hoping I don’t have to shut my computer down again today while I’m finishing them up. Have 50 pages to go.

A Trip Means Research or Research Means a Trip???

wild horse (2) (640x510) cow on top of mesa (640x427) sheep and dog (2) (640x427) angora goat looking at me (640x299) lizard (640x427) jack rabbit (640x427)

I used to take trips without thought to using the locations for a story, but when I became published, that all changed. I kept thinking about places I’d been–ski vacations in Colorado and Vermont and Pennsylvania, trips to the Caiman Islands, Hawaii, and the Virgin Islands and I’ve used several places in my stories. Greece? Possibly. Scotland was another story. It was my first time out of country where I actually went to do research–to visit 7 castles and get a feel of the landscape, whether there were enough trees for cover for my wolves, and the temperatures and the feel of the land.

So when I went to New Mexico, it was to see the wolves. But while there, we actually saw Mexican Gray Wolves also at another sanctuary, volcanoes, an ice cave, and a couple of reservations, and the ancient Anasazi ruins at Chaco.

I also considered the landscape for a story. Would it work for wolves? Or cougars? Or some other story? Here, you see trees, and there were trees in some areas, like at the volcano and ice cave we visited. But there were vast areas where very little was growing. I wondered how anything could survive out there as little water as they have.

When I returned to Central Texas, I felt relief to see GREENERY, trees, water!

I’ve been to many of the places I write about and it really does give a a feel for the area–more so than just reading about it and perusing pictures. It gives you a real sense of being there, because you have been there.

For one thing, it’s a lot drier. And we were on dirt roads a lot, so dusty. I kept looking for signs of life and saw none. And yet, I know it exists. When we were at the ancient Chaco ruins, I saw several lizards and a jack rabbit close up. On the way on and off the reservation–we took pictures of angora goats, wild horses, and sheep with their shepherding dog, cattle, and elk, none of them fenced in, all just roaming free.
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting New Mexico and the wilderness out there–no cell reception, therefore, no GPS, no internet, obviously, we used an outhouse most of the time to conserve water, and the solar powered electricity afforded us one little tiny light for about an hour, and that was it–with my friends and am ready for the next road trip!

So will I set a story in New Mexico? Most probably! Even if I use it for a romantic suspense.

Speaking of stories, I’m still working on She-Wolf Leader of the Pack proofing before I turn it in, so have a lovely Saturday! I’m off to work!

The Snail with a Beautiful Shell

Did you know that baby snails have a soft shell and as they eat calcium, it hardens? Remember how important calcium is to our bones and teeth? Well, for a snail, it’s his home, protection, burden to carry. 🙂

Snail's Beautiful Shell

Snail’s Beautiful Shell

But what makes the shell so beautiful, or not? Genetics? Mom and Pop? Luck? I saw a ton of snails in the yard that day, only I couldn’t capture them because I ran out of space on my card. Ugh.

I managed to capture him, and he was beautiful. Does he know it? Does it make him more conceited than the other snails? Ahhh, but who’s to say what constitutes beauty? Truly, it is in the eye of the beholder.

To his fellow snails, he might not be beautiful at all.

Have a super great fun and frisky Friday!

Ancient Ruins–Chaco, NM

Chaco--Anasazi Ruins

Chaco–Anasazi Ruins

Looks like a model, doesn’t it? But it’s for real, and though it looks small, it’s not. The boulders that fell down from the mesa on the right were HUGE. Some of them crushed part of the ruins.

Doorways into rooms

Doorways into rooms

This was a fun shot. A series of doorways into a series of rooms. How many doorways do you see? It was a maze of rooms like this. It’s light in here because there is no roof. But in truth, there would have been a floor above this, and another above that. Can you imagine how dark that would have been?

Shows how tiny the doorways were in some of the rooms

Shows how tiny the doorways were in some of the rooms

Yep, this is one of the doorways. Some were a little taller, some this small. My friend is five feet, five inches tall.

Not windows, but doors on another floor

Not windows, but doors on another floor

Looks like windows to the beautiful outdoors, when in reality, it’s just another floor, and these are doors to the next rooms. Note a pole sticking out of the wall on the left. That’s a remnant of one of the timbers that held up the floor.

View from up above showing several ruins

View from up above showing several ruins

They had hiking trails from one group of ruins to another. It was amazing to see so many of them so close that they were within walking distance. I had expected just one area. It was also amazing how these buildings were built starting around 950 and are still standing, to a degree. Can you imagine our own homes lasting that long?

Off to work on She-Wolf to get it ready to turn in.

Have a great Thursday!

Finishing up orders for some more bears. Working on MacIntyre Clan Bear this morning and then he and Hamilton Clan Bear will be shipped to their new families. 🙂 <3

And then it’s back to working on guest blogs for the upcoming release: SEAL Wolf Hunting in July.

I’ve also joined up to have Exchanging Grooms in an anthology for Hot Summer Romances. I’ll share the cover as soon as it’s finalized.

I’ve also been asked to be part of a giveaway at Kilted Souls and so I gave up one of my secrets, and commenters who give the right answer will have a chance to win an autographed book! Do you know which is the correct answer?

https://www.facebook.com/groups/824236350961441/

And I need to get back to writing. But I also finally got a tripod and I’m itching to use it. *sigh* Not enough hours in the day!

Have a super great Wednesday. Been working with the puppies also on obedience training. While I finished bears yesterday and shipped them, I didn’t bother training them. Tanner is brand new at wearing the collar, so I practiced having him come and sit. Max I can do without the collar now. But Tanner is still rather clueless. I was working on Down with them. Neither care to lie down unless they’re tired. So it’s a challenge getting either of them to do Down. So we’re working on it.

Okay, back to work. Nearly down with MacIntyre Clan Bear, then will take a picture and get him ready to ship.

How is your Wednesday shaping up?

Winning the Highlander's Heart

Winning the Highlander’s Heart, Book 1

Lady Anice vows to flee the amorous advances of King Henry I, and return to her home in the Highlands, where she hopes to find a laird to wed, when she learns her staff has vanished. Premonitions of imminent danger warn her of foul play and she is certain she is cursed when it comes to marriage.

The king orders the Highlander Laird Malcolm MacNeill, seeking an English bride, to provide the lass safe escort and learn what has become of her staff. Escorting her home safely proves a dangerous trial in and of itself and keeping his heart out of the matter, when the king wishes her wed to one of his loyal barons instead, complicates issues further. Losing his heart to the lass means Malcolm could very well lose his head.

The Accidental Highland Hero–Book 2

Lady Eilis Dunbarton’s life undergoes a drastic change with the death of her cousin, Agnes. Now she’s faced with the disagreeable prospect of marrying the man who was to be her cousin’s husband. Not by a change of contract, though. Instead, by deceit—pretending to be her cousin. But if her husband-to-be discovers she’s not really Agnes, her life is forfeit. When Laird James MacNeill’s clan rescues a half-drowned lass from the sea, there is speculation she is of the enemy clan, especially since she doesn’t remember her own name. James is immediately enticed with the lady, but his focus must remain on finding the proper bride. For if he does not wed soon, he must give up his holdings to one of his younger brothers.

Focus slips away with each day Eilis is close, and James finds himself contemplating the thought of taking her to wife without knowing her true identity.

But how dangerous would the end result be?

And what will happen if Eilis’s husband-to-be comes looking for her only to find her in the arms of another man?
