Vexing the Highlander is Out!

If you have already bought the anthology, Enchanting the Highlander, then this novella was in it. But if you haven’t, the novella is now available on its own. 🙂

Lady Aila MacIntosh hopes she doesn’t regret the king’s marital choices for her and her sister. Until one braw Highlander bumps into her at the king’s gathering. He’s as taken with her as she is with him, until she learns he is but a commoner, when she is a lady. The king would never make a match between them. Alban of the Clan Daziel meets a beautiful woman at the king’s court, only she is a lady and out of his reach. When the lady and he meet under awkward circumstances, they chance to overhear a plot to assassinate the king. Their lives spiral out of control and losing his heart to Aila is only one of his pressing concerns. Protecting her from those who wish the king dead—his greatest.

Yesterday, my neighbor, who loves historical romance, asked when I was going to be writing my next Highland book. This will be it. I just love this cover. 🙂 It’ll be next year. I have to finish Loving the White Bear this year and work on the next wolf story after that. 🙂 <3
myhighlander_mediumI just need to get Between a Wolf and a Hard Place edits back to the publisher, and get back to writing on Loving the White Bear. Because of edits, I missed my word count. 🙁
Tomorrow, I’ll share some Christmas stories, some by me, and some by other authors. Though I didn’t get a lot of takers. Holidays are a hard time to keep up with everything! 🙂
Have a wonderful day!

Stand Alone Titles vs Series

When I start a book, it’s standalone.  My wolf series started with Heart of the Wolf. I LOVED writing about wolves as shifters based on real wolves, but with romance and adventure, mystery and humor, and all that good stuff. Now, I wrote Heart of the Wolf, loving it, but when we write, trying to get a book published, that’s another story. However, publishers aren’t looking for standalone titles. They can’t build readership that way. And authors need readership. But if we can’t sell the first book in a “series,” why write a series of unsaleable books?

I was determined to sell a wolf book though, because I loved the idea. So I started writing Destiny of the Wolf.  They’re different wolf packs, same world, but don’t meet. So I solved the problem with writing a series that I couldn’t sell, sold Heart of the Wolf, and then added a mystery wolf who is in the first 4 standalone wolf titles. You see, I never knew if my publisher would keep buying the wolf tales.

I like standalone series myself. I like to finish a book and know it’s finished, and I love reading about characters I loved in the other stories who now get stories of their own. The same with my readers. I think I’ll write a story, some will like it, and the book won’t catch on, but I don’t intend to write more of them, even if I love the story. Then I get so many requests for more, I have to write them. And I love it.

In the books featured below, this is a series within a series. Again, who knew it would happen? Not me. But my first book about the Navy SEAL wolves was To Tempt The Wolf. Then A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing, A SEAL Wolf Christmas, and next year, SEAL Wolf Hunting.

Again, it’s like I had more characters that came to life and needed their own story. I read a blog where an author doesn’t like writing series. Granted, they take more effort. We have to remember details from earlier books, and if you have so many series going at the same time as I do, that can be a real challenge. But I want to write for my readers. And if that means I write about characters that readers have fallen in love with, I’ll do it. Case in point in the SEAL stories. Hunter, in To Tempt the Wolf, has a very annoying sister. But so many of my readers wanted to see her story, I had to write it. And A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing was born. Everyone wanted to see who could tame his sister. I had a ball, and that was my 9th book and it made USA Today Bestseller.

So I write standalone titles every time. Truly. But sometimes, oftentimes, they turn into series. 🙂 <3

What about you? Do you enjoy reading: Standalone titles? Standalone Series? Cliffhanger Series where you have to read them in order or you’re totally lost?

Have a great Tuesday! I finished writing Phantom Fae and now am working on edits! 🙂

Print proof is ready for me to review, but trying to get somewhere on His Wild Highland Lass.
Now that Her Highland Hero is on Amazon, I’ve uploaded it for a narrator for the audiobook format!

It’s been so hot, I’ve had to go out and water and while I did so, I scared a baby bunny from her hiding place behind a shrub. And of course, what did I have to do? Run and get my camera.

baby bunny (640x506)

Not only that, but I saw a dragonfly on the top of my pyracantha. The bad news is that it means there are voracious bugs eating my plants. And you can see that from the way they are stripped naked on top. But that is a nice place for my sentinel bird to perch, so some good comes of it. The other good news is the dragonfly will help to take care of the bugs.

I wasn’t sure, as far away as the dragonfly was, nor how high up it was, that I could even get a shot of him. It was hard to see what I was doing. Same with the bunny too. Mostly, I was just seeing light. And we had strong winds and the dragonfly was fluttering his wings rapidly trying to hang on to the branch, but I still managed to get a shot, winds and all.

When I went out the second time to move the water, I discovered two dragonflies feeding! So naturally, I had to dash back in the house, grab the camera, and try to catch them both.

Who would ever thought on such a hot and miserable day, I could find such wonders?

Back to the air conditioned cool and the hot Highlanders. 🙂

In the meantime, well, after I spent all yesterday finishing edits, adding a cover quote, and then last night and this morning working on publishing it, I WAS working on His Wild Highland Lass, the novella. I have nearly 15000 words done on it, was shooting for 20,000, but it will probably be closer to 23-25. Or longer. We’ve decided to go up to 30K if the stories require a longer story to be told. Isn’t that the way?

So I just wanted to pop in to say the book is done, publishing, oh, and for my print readers, it’s also done, and currently in review, so it should be done in a week or so. It takes longer for the print process to finish.

Now that it’s on Amazon, I can start working to find a narrator for the audiobook format!

Hope you are all having a lovely Monday!

It’s going to be a grueling 97 again today. We rarely get these high temps so early, so not looking forward to a really hot summer. Which means I will be working hard to keep these shrubs alive for the season. Only one from last year made it. Then I found a more drought resistant variety and planted that. But it will still need water to make it through its first season. Particularly with these hot, beastly days.

Off to get back to work. If I am not working on the current work-in-progress, I feel as though I haven’t been working. 🙂

Have a lovely day.

Did you get your blue light today? That’s the early morning light that you’re supposed to soak up so you feel great!

Silence of the Wolf is Available Today!!! Well, Yesterday!!!

It’s finally here! Can you believe my editor only wanted 4 books in the beginning??? But I knew I was gaining wolf pack members. That the more the word got out, the more wolves there were who wanted to join in on the fun.

I’m working on book 16 in the series right now. 🙂  And the wolves are as loved as ever. It does help to have different wolf packs, different places, to really make each book unique and not the same old thing. It’s something I try hard at doing because I know in my own reading, I hate to read a book I feel is just a rehash of another book. Even if they’re years apart, readers will continue to read them and love them, and so we can’t just write another one like that, thinking we can sneak by with it.

Nope. And I wouldn’t think of doing that. That’s why I love creating new stories. But I was reading a book I fell in love with, and then I read another of the author’s, written ten years later, and it had the same opening. LOL. She no longer writes, but I loved her writing style, and I wanted to read more of her books. But it taught me that even if you like a plot device, it’s not a good idea to use it again ten years later. Different genre? Sure. Different world? Sure. But not same world, same situation. Can I use it? Sure. LOL

Thanks for all my fan’s support in making this a long-running series. Through all your wolf love you have made it happen.

SILENCE OF THE WOLF BY TERRY SPEAR – IN STORES MARCH 2014

Life For the Silver Pack Just Got Wilder…

Elizabeth Wildwood has been a loner all her life, ostracized because of her “mixed” half-wolf, half-coyote blood. When this unusual shifter female comes into his pack’s territory, it’s Tom Silver’s job to protect her—if only she would let him.

This is Tom Silver’s story and much awaited, the youngest of the Silver Bros of Silver Town, Colorado, a wolf-run town. It started with Destiny of the Wolf, and Darien, the wolf pack leader, then Carol, who was a victim in that book, had her own book in Wolf Fever, and then Dreaming of the Wolf, was the middle brother, Jake’s story. So now, it’s Tom’s turn. :)

It’s available at B&N, Books-A-Million, Hastings, Powell’s Books, and Waldenbooks. And more. And also at the online locations listed above.

From Single Title to a Series!

When I wrote Bound by Danger, it was a single title book. 🙂 It’s in part based on some of my military experiences, some on true case crimes, and well, the psychic business and the romance is pure fantasy. Some of it has to be fiction after all! All the locations are real places I’ve either visited or lived. So it was a lot of fun for me to write this story. What I didn’t expect was to have a great outpouring of love for the book and that fans wanted to see the next in the series. 🙂 And I love it!!!

Army officer Deidre Roux has hidden her psychic abilities until now. But ominous visions plague her and between the martial arts tactics her twin brother taught her and the hand-to-hand combat she learned in the Army—she’s realizing just how important these skills are for her well-being.
When a reporter moves in next door, she’s not sure just what to think. Dave Carter owns a gun—it is Texas—and comes to her rescue when her brother suddenly drops into her life again. From there it’s the normal stuff that women and men tend to do when they’re getting to know each other—boating, swimming, dancing—except for one thing…she’s trying to keep her secret under wraps at all costs, which is difficult to do when she’s under surveillance by the FBI, and people keep wanting her dead.
Could a reporter, who’s not really a reporter, prove he might just have what it takes to keep her safe–for the long run?
And so goes the birth of a series! First, this story is also based on some of the places I’ve lived, as was In the Dead of the Night–and in that one, one of the FBI safe houses was the same one used by the FBI in Bound by Danger. 🙂

In the Dead of the Night

Allan Thompson works for a special agency that takes down terrorists, but when he’s given the mission to protect one of Thurstan Wilson’s mistresses, he knows something isn’t right. Jenny Brant doesn’t have much time before she’s history and she has a plan, but what happens next turns her whole world inside out.
Allan Thompson arrives in Waco, Texas for a mission of utmost importance–protect a terrorist’s mistress from being the next victim on his hit list. But when the mission goes down wrong, Jenny Brant is nearly killed and Allan begins a new mission–protect her at all costs–as her faux husband until she can regain her memories.
Everything about the mission seems wrong–all starting with one Jenny Brant who doesn’t fit the profile of the kind of woman Wilson usually hooks up with. Allan and his team must protect her, but at what cost to his own sanity or his heart?
Jenny Brant begins to regain her memories, but when she learns she has a huge inheritance that Wilson wants by marrying her, and the agent Allan Thompson will marry her instead to secret her money away with the Agency’s protection, she still can’t remember why she would have been a killer’s main squeeze. When Wilson’s thugs try to return her to him, she becomes less sure of who the good guys are and who she truly is.
The only thing she knows for certain–if someone doesn’t take down Wilson, her life is forfeit.
So we’re again in Texas, and again Bound for… well, in this case Danger, of course, and so much Trouble. Isn’t that great???
I’m still editing the story, and tweeking the cover, but what do you think?

I did write 7,000 on Jaguar Pride over the weekend, 7,000 over my quota for the week. If I get lucky and the ending comes to me, I should have the end written by the end of the week.

But today, I’m going to run errands, have lunch out, and play at the zoo. So are you ready to be Bound for Trouble?

Okay, off to get another cup of hot green tea.

Have a super great Monday. And stay out of trouble, will ya?!

My thoughts on A SEAL Wolf Christmas

What I love most about Terry Spear’s book is that you don’t feel lost if you read the series books out of order. I also loved seeing all the cameos of characters in previous Heart of the Wolf books. And, of course I loved the HEA and was surprised that a second HEA was found in the supporting characters.

This book is a rollercoaster ride of mystery, intrigue, and wolfy love set to the backdrop of an Oregon winter. There is so much action going on and so many different plot twists. Many interwoven mysteries blended with well-developed characters and super sexy wolves. Terry Spear is a masterful storyteller. I loved every page of it!

I received a Net Galley copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All conclusions are my own.
Rating: 5 Stars
