A Blue Octopus

Have you ever ordered something and you get the wrong thing, have to ship it back, and yay! Get what you ordered, but on the box it says it’s the same thing you got last time that isn’t what you ordered??? The fae come to mind.

But I also wonder if no one else wants the item and that’s why I keep getting it back. It’s a new one, not the same one, but hey, if they send it to me enough times, I’ll give up and give in? A blue octopus???? Not me. I finally got hold of someone on a chat to get it straightened out. I’m sure the item is shelved wrong–and that it is not some evil intention to pawn something off on me that I don’t want, but…..

It would make for a good story. Right?

You see, real life makes for a good story. Really.

The real item should be here on Monday, and I have to take the wrong one to the post office today, yet again. I’m just hoping this time it’s the right one!

I finally saw my son-in-law and daughter’s new chairs for gaming, and I decided that’s what I need for my desk after trying them both out and liking my daughter’s. I do play games (when I finish a book and have the time), but it’s for writing for me. The chair I have now is soooooo uncomfortable, that I can’t sit on it for long. It has no padding (though since I have extra, you’d think I wouldn’t have any trouble there), and no back support. So I have to sit on my recliner and use my laptop. I’d love to be able to sit at my desk and write all day long again. I used to, but my old chair was in bad shape, so when I moved, I got rid of it. But it was good for writing! I only used my laptop for trips back then.

So, hey, isn’t that a good line of reasoning? Once I have my new chair, I can write faster? That’s what one of my critique partners said about her lack of writing for years–if she gets a new keyboard, maybe it will jump-start her writing? Go for it!

But then the challenge is getting all the chair parts into one piece, and hoping that they don’t send me a blue octopus instead.

Off to get caught up on my writing. I got behind yesterday. Hope you stay ahead of the game and if you like blue octopuses, let me tell you how you can get one!

Do Your Work First!

Or else! My daughter asked me to watch baby while she has a patio quote extension done. I planned to run errands first thing, so before everything opened, I was playing with a wolf picture I took. Was that doing my work first? No…..

I did get caught up on word count yesterday, but now….

Whoops, I goofed on figuring out my word count goals. I didn’t take off the days I have baby. No way can I get 2,000 words on those days. *sigh* I’ll have to get a little bit after she leaves those nights and try to make up for it during the week. I planned to weed this morning too, but can’t with baby here. I did work on another flowerbed later in the day, so it’s part way done.

No More Vacation–Time for the Real World

Returning home means reality sets in! Writing daily goals, taking care of the dogs (I spent hours combing out Max yesterday and need to work on Tanner today), WEEDING the flowerbeds, have three bear orders waiting on me, etc.

Koi at the arboretum in MN, a sleeping fairy at my friend’s house, and then my gardens: zinnia flowerbed, golden zinnia, and the lilyturf (liriope)’s purple flowers are blooming, and purple magic crepe myrtles are in full bloom.

Last night, I was working on one of the flowerbeds out front after getting my word count and grooming Max, and man was it awful. Not only was it still 103 heat index, dripping wet humidity, but the mosquitoes were ravenous. I covered myself in insect repellent, but apparently not well enough. So when they found my ankles, I was trying to kill them as fast as they were landing. Not fun. And finally gave up, making a hasty retreat to the house.

But I was determined to do it again this morning because I have 7 flowerbeds out front filled with zinnias and weeds. I finished the one from last night, another out front that was filled with weeds, and 2 that weren’t bad. My hands hurt–the weeds and grass roots are dug in all the way to China, and I was soaked from the high humidity, so came in and will try for the last 3 beds tomorrow. They are really bad too. If it hadn’t been so hot and humid, I would have just stayed out there and finished all of them. Hate not getting something done. But…at least 4 are done! I kept thinking if only it was 59 degrees out. That’s what the temperature dropped to this morning AFTER I left Minnesota!!!

Reached 21,000 words yesterday on the new story! 59,000 to go!

As you can see, I still have to take my pictures. lol

Beautiful Memories and a Rainbow Welcome Home!

The double and single rainbows were in the clouds when I was in the airplane, descending into the Houston airport. The mirrored curved wall was the coolest artwork in a very strange field of art sculptures. And Tasha is the black bear, 3 years old, playing in the pond.

The fun thing about the trip was that I took thousands of pictures and all are beautiful, fun, interesting, and funny memories that I can look back on for years. In the meantime, I managed to type up more of the story after writing for 5 hours while waiting to board the plane and while flying to Houston. I only paused to take some cloud and rainbow pictures. I ended up with 19,000, which is 5,000 over my word goal!

But, my gardens need major weeding. At 95 degrees, it’s just sooooo hot. I did take some zinnia pictures this morning, and I’m still downloading all the pictures I took on the trip. I still need to unpack more, but have to get my word count too. The puppies have been playing all morning. They’re happy I’m home, though they loved being at my daughter and SIL’s home with the baby and the corgis.

Off to work… Have a super, memory-filled day!

Wildlife at the Arboretum

When I think of arboretums, I think of flowers and other kinds of gardens. We saw a Japanese garden, hosta woodland garden, fern wooded garden, herbs, vegetable, and fruit gardens, shrub gardens, and tree gardens, ponds, and many different flower gardens, waterfalls, ponds, and bubblers, lakes, marshy swamps, and more.

But we also managed to catch geese (which I didn’t download, will have to do it tonight), chipmunks, squirrels, a DRAGONFLY! (I’ve been trying to capture one my whole trip), a wild turkey! (that was a surprise), a squirrel, a monarch butterfly on an orange coneflower, and koi.

We walked 5 miles at the zoo the day before yesterday, and 4 miles up and down hills in the heat and humidity yesterday at the arboretum. So we’ve been getting a good workout every day.

North Shore Lake Superior & Butterflies at Como Zoo

Everything was blue, the water, the clouds–a mist on the water making it blend with the sky.

Butterflies and the flowers were beautiful at the Como Zoo. They were sitting all over the place, perfect little models. I’ll have to share more later! Over 50 varieties of butterflies!

Hope your day is filled with butterflies!! Off to the Arboretum.

It’s Okay if I Don’t Write!

I took off the week from writing, though I managed to get 2500 written this week anyway. But this is a research trip, and I signed books at a Barnes and Noble. I’ll use my travels for a story setting in one of my future books. I’ve been up here before, but more to see the wolves and their behavior, and to enjoy the other sites. Even so, I’ve set one of the white wolf stories in Ely during the winter based on my first trip up here, and I’ll have to do one for some shifter story for the summer after seeing all the flowers in abundance, experiencing the weather–hot, stormy, cool, etc.

Bears and wolves and rain, oh my! It poured so hard, we finally had to pull off the road, but it wasn’t letting up, so after a little wait, we continued on our way, ended up on a gravel road and finally back to civilization.

We’ve been brainstorming the whole time too, and I’ve been taking notes, so that’s important, and we’ve been halfway listening to Silver Wolf Christmas, which helps me to remember some of the character details and setting for Silver Town, since I’m writing the next book in the Silver Town series. So see? I’m not goofing off…too much. 🙂

Okay, were off to see the zoo. Tomorrow it will be the arboretum. It might be iffy on the weather. Hope we’re not rained out on either day! We were going to market last night, but as you can see by the rain we were having, it was a no-go.

Getting High on Flowers…

Everywhere we went or looked there were more flowers. It was flower heaven! Every time I’d put my camera away, I was pulling it back out. Orange milkweed at Gooseberry Falls, hostas, Asian lilies, mossy rock and bluebells at the North Shore, Lake Superior, black-eyed susans and daisies, International Wolf Center.

The last time we came up here, it was fall, four years ago. So seeing the wildflowers and gardens for summer has been just beautiful.
