How to Choose Who Wins

I had several CD Audiobook giveaways to offer, so how do I choose the winners? It depends. Sometimes for loyal readers, sometimes for the hope of new readers. For those who follow my blogs/FB, newsletter. For those who comment on my FB or blog. It’s amazing how many people comment daily on my postings, but others never do unless it’s for a giveaway.

It’s like a test too. Does an entrant really say something in a comment? Or just: I love the cover, or not even that. A heart. It costs me money to send gifts so I like to feel that when I give them, it means something to the recipient and it means something to me.

Image may contain: 1 person, text

I look at FB pages of entrants. Some of my readers share my posts. One shared all of the CD offerings. She will win one because I appreciate that she could narrow her chances at winning by letting her friends know about it, but she helped spread the word. Not only that, but she often shares my posts, not just stuff like this!

I look to see how many have already received tons of books from me. I look to see who all enters contests and that’s it. I’ve given several books to one “reader” who always says, “I’ve never read any of your books.” So, hmm, what happened to the ones I sent to her? I’m now wary of that ploy! But hey, it works for her! Authors are drawn in by the chance to hook a new reader. But it’s just a game for a “reader” like her.

I know some authors do a chance drawing, so if someone posts a response a couple of times on the posting, they have a better chance at winning. Playing the system. Not really interested in the books as much as winning the game. Look. What. I . Won.

I want someone to win my books who genuinely is interested in my books.

Years ago when I was sharing books on a review site, the owner said they read every response and chose the best reader comments for a win.

That’s what I try to do.

For loyal readers. For those who are just getting started with my series. For those who want a chance to check them out. I like giving books away when I can. But it costs me money and I want to feel that I get something back in return.

So I’m off and writing on Bite of the Vampire, have books to ship, and I’m now farther along on the 2nd book in the series than the 3rd book. I might finish it before the end of the year. Here’s hoping! I still need to try and put the Halloween cougar novella in print, and I’m working on edits on Falling for the Cougar, and Red Wolf Christmas (now Joy to the Wolves) edits are coming soon.

Have a super great day! I’m off to choose some winners so I can get these shipped today!

A Christmas Story from Caryn Moya Block

The Volkov Twins and The Christmas Cookies

By Caryn Moya Block

russian-tea-cakes

While snow fell outside coating the ground in a blanket of white, inside the Siberian Alpha’s lodge a different kind of snow fell as Katya, Karina, and Illarion make Christmas cookies for the Alpha and his mate.

Babushka – Grandma, Illarion is going too fast. I can’t keep up with him,” five year old Karina complained glaring at Illarion, the boy who in the future would be her twin sister Katya’s mate. The three of them stood around the table in the kitchen. Karina’s grandmother, Yelena, looked over, but went back to playing with their new baby sister, Vera.

“Me do, me do,” their three year old little brother Rurik demanded as he jumped up and down at the edge of the table. His dark hair fell around his face while his blue eyes begged to be included. Illarion winked at Rurik.

“Rurik,” Yelena called. “Could you get me the diaper bag? Vera needs changing.” The little boy ran to his grandmother across the room.

She whispered something in his ear and he grinned widely before scampering off to find the bag full of diapers.

“You don’t have to be so exacting, Karina. Just roll the cookie in the sugar,” Illarion said, leaning over to plop another ball into the bowl of powdered sugar.

“It has to be evenly coated. You wouldn’t want a cookie only partially covered.” Karina dipped her fingers back into the bowl of sugar and rolled the cookie balls around making sure each one was dusted. “It has to be done properly! Katya, tell him.” Karina looked at her twin sister, hoping for back up.

“Karina,” Katya sighed, “Would you like me to help you with the powdered sugar?” Katya took the sugar covered balls out of the bowl and set them in rows on the cooking sheets.

“No, I can do it. I want to surprise Mom and Dad when they get back. Mom said Russian Tea Cakes are her favorite Christmas cookies.”

Illarion wrinkled his nose. Katya glanced over at him and chuckled.

Karina frowned wondering if they spoke telepathically to each other. It was hard sharing Katya with the older Illarion. He was so irritating at times, acting like he knew better than Karina what her twin was thinking. Katya was her sister.

“What? You don’t like Russian Tea Cakes?” Karina asked.

“I like all the food that comes out of this kitchen, isn’t that right, Yelena?” Illarion asked, walking over to the sink and washing his hands.

Karina looked over and realized that only a few cookies were left to be dusted. Katya pulled over one more cooking sheet and began to fill it.

“Oh, yes, Illarion. You eat everything.” Yelena wrapped the baby back up in a blanket and then kissed Vera on the nose.

“We’re almost done, Babushka. Karina only has six or so to go.” Katya said.

“Leave the trays of cookies, I’ll deal with them after I lay your sister down for her nap.” Both Karina and Katya nodded.

“Katya, I thought of a gift for your parents,” Illarion said, his light blond hair falling across his eyes. He swiped it out of the way. “If, you and Karina want to do it?”

“What?” Karina asked. Did he really have a good idea or was he teasing again?

“I thought I could take your picture on the camera your Mom bought me for my birthday. You could make a nice frame and give the picture to them for Christmas.”

“Wow, that sounds great,” Katya said. “What do you think, Karina? Mom and Dad won’t be home until dark. We could go outside and take a few pictures once you’re done coating the last cookies.”

Karina thought a moment, and then picked up her pace with the dough balls. Mom loved pictures and Dad loved whatever made Mom happy. “Okay. All done,” she said and wiped her hands on a towel. “Let’s go, if it’s all right with you, Babushka?”

“Go. I’ve got my hands full with your little brother and sister. Don’t forget a wrap,” Yelena called after the children running out the back door. She shook her head and ruffled Rurik’s hair. “Don’t worry Rurik, I have a project you can help me with once Vera is asleep.”

A black bear and his turkey vulture friends.

And I just completed Matheson Clan Bear triplets for another order and will be shipping them today!
Matheson bears (640x239) (2)

In previous posts, I’ve shown the turkey vultures surrounding the lion and lioness as if they were part of their royal court. And actually perched on top of a rhino that was sleeping. I’ve never seen the bear up and moving around. And I’ve never seen the turkey vultures in his exhibit. So see? They might not be the greatest pictures as far as photography goes, but as far as subject, pretty cool, don’t you think?

black bear side vultures (640x427)

I managed to get to 27,000 yesterday, despite being on a LIVE blog tour from noon until midnight. And I should make my goal by the weekend of 30,000, maybe more.

If you have a chance or the inclination, drop by Sia’s blog and comment for a chance at a win!

Have a super great TGIF! 🙂

Oh, and I’m from the bear state of California, and I’m researching grizzlies in Montana for A SEAL Wolf for Sale, and I saw the bear at the zoo, so what do you think I had a nightmare about???

Jaguar Fever is Out Today!

Image

I’ve been inundated with links today, where I’m at, so I’m going to list them here. I may end up updating them again later. 🙂 I have reheated my water for my tea twice, and still haven’t had a sip! LOL It’s going to be a wild romp through the jaguar jungle!

Jessie’s Review on USA TODAY

“I love cat shifters, so Jaguar Fever was a fun read, and although I didn’t read the first book, Savage Hunger, I understood the storyline, though I will be going back to read the first. Wade (hero) is also hot, very alpha and has a laser focus when it comes to Maya. As with all of Terry’s books, the love scenes are hot and blush-worthy. Her Heart of the Wolf series is also steamy.”

And Sara and I are at USA TODAY also here!

Jaguar Fever Releases Tomorrow! & Amazon Interview!

Though most stores already have them in stock!

And the post is up with the Q/A from Amazon’s interview of me at RWA Nationals if you’d like to check it out!

http://www.kindlepost.com/2013/08/qa-with-terry-spear-on-writing-shapeshifter-romance-and-more.html

Also was working on a new cover for Goddess in Training. It’s a short novella, but I wanted to show more what it’s about, so I changed covers for the story. What do you think? I’m also working on a new one for the Genie’s Wish. Hopefully, that one will be just as beautiful. 🙂

What do you think? This is only 99 cents at B&N and Amazon, Kobo, Smashwords, etc. so if you want a fun, quirky, sexy read… it’s yours for under a dollar! Cheaper than that Starbucks coffee fix!

In a game of the gods, librarian Lisandra, who has never been loved, is chosen to be the goddess of fertility. The demi-god of pleasure, Assarian is ordered by Zeus to train her in the hallowed halls of Mount Olympus to prove to his wife, Hera, goddess of marriage, mortals and immortals alike only need be physically satisfied to find fulfillment, to which Hera disagrees—all creatures must have love to be whole. ~~~I loved Greek Mythology when I was growing up, but just like with werewolves and vampires, I wanted to see a happily ever after between the Greek Gods and Goddesses and the mortals they toyed with.

But Miranda isn’t about to be seduced by the vampire no matter how sexy he is, not when he’s on her terminal list. Sarzoven soon realizes she’s a dark huntress, who doesn’t eliminate a rogue vampire until she’s sure he or she is truly a renegade.

So why is he on her list? Now he must convince her to remove him from her elimination schedule before she decides he really is a rogue. Miranda knows she can’t permit the vampire from swaying her from her mission, but soon she finds she’s on someone else’s list. But who’s behind this twisted game that’s bound to stir up vampire and hunter hatred alike? And can the huntress and vampire overcome their age old distrust of one another before it’s too late?

Winners for Last Week & What’s Coming Next!

I have over 12,000 written for The Highlander! Just had to get that out of the way. Excited. Need to begin writing A Highland Wolf Christmas also.

The Highlander

She’s the one he’s looking for, but she denies it.

Can’t wait to show off the cover for A Highland Wolf Christmas also. And A Hero of a Highland Wolf! They’re working on them and they’re GORGEOUS.

I’ll be going to the readers’ conference, Authors After Dark, soon in Savannah, Georgia. I’ll be doing a variety of things–taking a steamboat ride, going on a ghost hunter’s tour–using paranormal equipment, attending a vampire’s ball, an elemental ball, and I just learned we have to dress up for a formal event. And I’ll be speaking of 4 panels about historical stuff, paranormal stuff, military stuff and other stuff.

I’ll probably wear something like this for the formal like I wore at the Fantasy, Futuristic, and Paranormal Southern Gothic Ball in Atlanta at Nationals.

You know, the usual stuff! For a paranormal author who is attending a readers’ conference for paranormal types.

Isn’t that fun???

The problem always is–what do you wear???

It’s not your usual–it’s going to be hot out, dress cool and comfortable type of event for a summer visit to a southern state.

Unfortunately, my clothes for one won’t do for another. *sigh*

Unless I was a real vampire and just wore my vampire black evening wear to the formal ball. If anyone wanted to take me to task for wearing the same formal attire, I’d just bare my very real fangs.

Fantasy, Futuristic, and Paranormal Conference, New Orleans. Who says you can’t catch the image of a vampire??? Complements of Bonnie and her special effects camera. Who, by the way, is off to another ghostly adventure. Last time she and I got together, we witnessed the bouncing truck in front of one haunted building in New Orleans.

My elemental costume isn’t dressy enough, or vampirish enough to wear to the formal and none of them are dressed down enough to wear on the steamboat ride or the ghoulish walk through the cemetery looking for ghostly spirits.

And that means–I’m still trying to figure out my wardrobe, hoping I haven’t forgotten everything I’m supposed to bring for other events and such!

In the meantime, I’m back to the blog tour tomorrow and more giveaways to come!

But before that, I wished to announce some winners for this week:

Samantha Corr won an ebook copy of Highland Rake–she was the only one who commented yesterday! Need email.

Denise Van Plew &
Stephanie F  won a copy of a signed Jaguar Fever, need home addresses to send them to.

lisaguertin can have a copy of an audiobook, your choice, need email.

Winner of the ebook copy of The Dark Fae:
Judi S, need email

Winner of a signed copy of Savage Hunger: heathercm2001, need home address to send it to

So keep dropping by and commenting, and you can have a chance to win also!

Another Giveaway!–Brooklyn Ann’s Blog

Waterfall at Galveston’s Moody Gardens

Tuesday Jaguar Fever releases!!! If you’ve read Savage Hunger and you see a waterfall, what does it remind you of? Well, no waterfall scenes like that in Jaguar Fever, but the cats still love to play in water. And in Jaguar Hunt, there is a waterfall scene!  But much, much different from Savage Hunger’s. But I’m not telling…

I’m here today at Brooklyn Ann’s site talking about researching big cats with a free giveaway–signed copy of Savage Hunger!

So be sure and drop by and comment!

I just finished the 2nd round of edits on Silence of the Wolf–*sigh* Tom…

And I’m off to a new adventure. Hmm, I keep thinking of Highlanders of old, of hawk fae, and of Guthrie MacNeill and Calla Stewart and how they’re going to first start out their story.

Which means even though I finished A Hero of a Highland Wolf, which is with readers now, I’m totally back to the beginning.

Starting the books. 🙂

Have a super Saturday!! And be sure to drop by and comment on Brooklyn’s blog for a chance at a signed copy of Savage Hunger!

And for everyone who comments on my blog here today, a chance at winning an ebook copy of Highland Rake!

So my question to you, if you’ve been reading the Highland Medieval stories, The Highlander is about the MacNeill’s cousin, and he needs to find the love of his life. Course, he only is thinking of adventure, fighting, a guy thing. Marrying a sweet lassie is the farthermost thing from his mind. What do you think will help change his mind?

If you’re reading the wolf stories, Guthrie is attending one of Calla’s parties she gets paid to coordinate–acting as her bodyguard along with a couple of other of his clansmen. This is in Scotland, so what kind of party should it be?

If you’re reading the YA fae series, who do you think the dragon fae should end up with?

And that’s it! I’m off to spread the word about the giveaways, start a story, and hope you all have a lovely Saturday!

New Cover for The Accidental Highland Hero, Fresh Fiction Review for Jaguar Fever, and Night Owl Romance Guest Blog!

The Accidental Highland HeroThe Accidental Highland Hero–Book 2–it got a new cover!!! Don’t you love it? I loved the romance, the setting, and the movement of the characters. 🙂 Don’t you just wish you were her???

Lady Eilis Dunbarton’s life undergoes a drastic change with the death of her cousin, Agnes. Now she’s faced with the disagreeable prospect of marrying the man who was to be her cousin’s husband. Not by a change of contract, though. Instead, by deceit—pretending to be her cousin. But if her husband-to-be discovers she’s not really Agnes, her life is forfeit. So what choice does Eilis have but to flee?

When Laird James MacNeill’s clan rescues a half-drowned lass from the sea, there is speculation she is of the enemy clan, especially since she doesn’t remember her own name. James is immediately enticed with the lady, but his focus must remain on finding the proper bride. For if he does not wed soon, he must give up his holdings to one of his younger brothers.

Focus slips away with each day Eilis is close, and James finds himself contemplating the thought of taking her to wife without knowing her true identity.

But how dangerous would the end result be?

And what will happen if Eilis’s husband-to-be comes looking for her only to find her in the arms of another man?

Fresh Fiction Review!

Jaguar Fever

Hot and sexy jaguar shifters!

Jaguar Fever
Terry Spear

Reviewed by Annetta Sweetko

JAGUAR FEVER has a multilayered, sizzling plot that will have readers unable to put it down. At times the dialogue is funny and others deeply moving especially as Maya comes to terms with what she wants in life. There is enough action and surprises to keep these kick-butt shifters busy and enough steam to have the reader blushing. I hope author Terry Spear has more of these shifters up her sleeve because there are a couple of Wade’s teammates that need a story of their own. If you are looking for sexy shifters, action in both human and shifter form, exotic locations, romance and steamy love scenes JAGUAR FEVER is exactly what you need.

I loved Annetta’s review!!

And I’ll be having a giveaway of Savage Hunger at Night Owl Reviews today!!! 🙂

Cearnach MacNeill in A Hero Showdown–Round 1! Needs Your Vote!

In Group 4 we have Gladiators, Sex Demons, Head Honchos, and  Highland Werewolves.  Gladiators is a new theme on the paranormal scene and Sex Demons are just plain fun.  For Head Honchos, we looked at those that take a – usually tortured and rag tag bunch – of immortal men –  and try to keep them in line. And since – for some reason – a lot of Werewolves are Scots, we thought they deserved a category all their own.  A fun round to be sure!
